True Detective! Should I watch season 2 or skip it?

Initially, my intention was solely to watch season 1. However, my love for Jody Foster and Mahershala Ali compelled me to explore seasons 3 and 4. I’ve come across numerous rational arguments both in favor and against season 2, so I’ll leave the decision to you all. Sound fair?

Comments

I've only watched season 1 and 4 so I don't know.

Catherine Thurmond

Actually, wouldn’t mind you watching S4 just to see your reaction between that and the first.

Hunter Cox

Skip 2 and 4. Watch 3.

Hunter Cox

Whatever you do don’t skip 3. Best television acting I’ve ever seen by Mahershala Ali

Lara Bryant

I actually quite like season 2, but I understood why people didn't.

Shane

Watch season 4!!!! It’s so good!

Devon Michelle

I'd say watch it if only for the fact that I wouldn't mind revisiting it to see if/how it holds up! I only watched it the one time when it came out and while it is a step down for sure, I remember it still being better than a lot of shows around that time. I still recall all the major plot beats and characters so it stuck with me in some sense!

I vote to skip Season 2. I didn't even finish it despite liking actor Colin Farrell...he was fantastic in the film "The Penguin". I enjoy Ali and Foster as well and vote to watch seasons 3 and 4.

KimM

I havent watched it so I’d say either option works for me as long as you eventually get to season 4 🤞🏻. much love

Iris

No way, I love season 4 so much too!!

Iris

2 had a lot of potential, but it was rushed and very impacted by a writer’s strike. Sad waste of a bonkers Collin Farrell. I’m maybe the only person on the planet whose favorite season is 4.

I'd to a large extent forgotten about True Detective when I watched S4 (for Jodie Foster and the setting like you) and I think coming into it without the expectation that it have a "True Detective" feel helped a lot. Without going into any detail, the subject matter explored in S4 was very up my alley so I found it easy to immerse into. I loved it. I'm curious to revisit it with Frank fresh off S1 and 3 and see if it holds up for me.

fair

Franklin

What do you mean?

Franklin

He finished Succession.

People saying skip probably haven't watched it twice and only watched it the one time when they couldn't separate it from season one, and thought nothing could ever touch season 1. All you have to be able to do is separate season 1 and season 2 and it is still better than a lot of stuff you have seen out there. Of course it isn't gonna touch season 1. Duh. Nothing after season 1 touches season 1. Also, many shows have season 2s that people feel let down by... Because season 1 comes out of nowhere and people had no expectations for it. But season 2 comes with expectations, and different people want different things from it so inevitably some people are disappointed by it. People can't just appreciate the vision of the creator for what it is. Because there is disliking it for disliking it, and then there is broadcasting it and telling other people not to experience it for themselves.

I vote skip. I can’t really even remember it it was just so grim and heavy and forgettable except for that grim heavy vibe. I loved S4 and S3 is also good.

SKIIIIPPP 😝 Okay, so I usually try not to weigh in like this to avoid potential bias tainting, BUT since we’re being asked lol 🤷🏻‍♀️…So anyways, consider the following VIBE SPOILERS FOR S2-4. NO PLOT SPOILERS, BUT JUST MY OPINIONS OF WORTH. DO NOT READ IF YOU DON’T LIKE TO HEAR OPINIONS BEFORE WATCHING . . . . . . . For me, s2 way misses the mark and I couldn’t watch it. But s3 got me back in that s1 vibe again and I really liked it. Imo, though, it’s not as good as s1, but that’s okay because it still really delivers, especially as Frank said getting to watch Mahershala Ali, his performance is superb (duh lol). But the whole cast is really good, and I especially really enjoyed the dynamic between Ali and his partner Stephen Dorff. Now, s4. I was SO HYPED for s4. First of all, Jodie Foster?? COME ON. As the kiddos say, I am sat 😂 And two, I am automatically so on board for anything in an icy cold setting. And then of course, coming from s3, I assumed we were good to go. Now, idk. Maybe my expectations were too high. But honestly? I was SO let down by the first episode, I just didn’t bother continuing. For me, it was the lack of artistic craftsmanship that I’d come to expect from the show. Instead, it had that very artificial and pedestrian feeling coupled with weird pacing thats such a hallmark of too much of contemporary film making (and I’m very turned off from). Either give me immersive realism or creative artistry, and either way, definitely take the time to let moments breathe and make sure what is shown is meaningfully giving us a connection to characters. Too much contemporary films and shows don’t seem to know how to do that, and instead feel flat but with bells and whistles, like a gassed up soap opera that’s just checking boxes. Don’t get me wrong, there are exceptions to the norm still out there being made, thank goodness lol. But for me, s4 wasn’t starting out as one of them. Maybe I’ll try again to watch the whole series when Frank does and end up changing my mind, who knows lol! Love to hear anyone’s thoughts on that and what your experience with s4 was (plot spoiler free, of course).

Season 2 has a mesmerizing opening credits that's worth checking out but that's about it 😂

Jenny Jackson

I only ever watched season 3 cos I love Mahershala too. I'll watch anything he's in. I love Colin Farrell too though so I might check it out at some stage. Basically, I can't really give an opinion on season 2! 😃

Kim D

Only season 1 is worth watching. Go back to Succession!

Nick Cangemi

There are 2 of each option!
