Deep dive into the Epstein cult: Ghislaine’s father was a bigshot with Mossad. It’s easy to speculate that the abuse of young girls was as much about blackmailing political figures as it was about sexual violence.

Btw, I was the one saying I almost cried when I realized that season 2 was a totally different story with totally different characters. I mean, didn't it kinda seem like they were setting up another season where we would possibly find the other powerful people who were in the cult? Also, with all the clues about the Yellow King and Carcosa, I really thought they were going to reveal a lot more about the Carcosa cult. Plus, I just expected, like almost every other show, that following seasons would have the same characters which were so lovingly established in season one! Cuz, Even though I do believe this season is perfect as is, it just seemed impossible to believe we weren't going to see more Rust&Marty and more of this story. Man I'm getting upset just remembering that moment! 😭. And yes, as you said, that kinda ruined season 2 & 3 for me. By the time season 4 came out, I knew what to expect and wasn't still stinging from disappointment -- plus the mood just feels much more like season 1, so I enjoyed it. Nothing is ever gonna quite measure up tho...😢

She is identified as his half sister on Wikipedia so that seems to be her classification. They are only 12 years apart in real life, so it wouldn't have been his mom, plus his mom probably would have been upset that her husband was on a bed spring in the small house out back becoming jerky.

Let me give you a phrase that the coach of my town's MLS team Columbus Crew said after he won MLS Cup in 2023 in his first season of being our coach, I think you will love this phrase and maybe even use it yourself: "Impossible is an opinion." He became the first black head coach to win MLS Cup. He's French and he says the most inspirational yet unconventional things at times but they end up as great motivational things!

Rust’s perspective and beliefs on so many things were always relatable to me. It’s like a very specific concoction of pessimistic and realist views.
This show is a forever rewatch for me personally. I just enjoy their partnership dynamic and their individual struggles with balance. I think it’s what really elevates the show past just a standard detective show.

I am so happy you loved this show as much as I do. I've been one of those people patiently trying to suggest watching this whenever it came up 🤣. I will never stop sharing with anyone who will listen what an absolute masterpiece of a show this is. And now you understand just why the other seasons had too much to live up to 🤣 that said, I think season 4 is the closest any of them came to being as good as this season. They also tied made some connections in the story between seasons 1 and 4 and I would definitely recommend watching that next if you're up for continuing the anthology.

My memory of this show (as someone who watched it when it came out) was that it was the first time the large American audience was introduced to small seasons and single-season stories. It had been a big thing in UK TV and I remember being so excited that we were finally getting something similar that was so popular. Also, the idea that two huge actors were in it was kinda odd. Like, not that long ago, you were either a movie actor or a TV actor and TV was for sure the lesser of the two. But these two were movie actors at this point coming to do TV. And I remember a lot of articles and media coverage generally being confused by the whole thing. And I would bet a LOT of people who weren’t chronically on Tumblr like I was back then had no clue, even when Season 2 started, that it was reset with a new cast/story. So I can see how disappointing that would be.
It is marked in my brain as the show that sort of changed us away from the 24-episode Fall-to-Spring TV schedule. I don’t know if it officially was, obviously shows like Twin Peeks (the GOAT) were short seasons too long before, but it was just SO GOOD and SO POPULAR from day one that I think it opened a lot of eyes to how enjoyable that could be. Especially after all the attention True Detective got for that one-continuous-shot scene during the shootout. Everyone talked about it foreeeever. Now every show tries to do it at some point to replicate that insane hype. After that it felt like shows got shorter and the stories got richer and now the blend of movie actor and TV actor doesn’t always seem so set in stone.
I hadn’t watched it since it came out, and I’ve been refreshing my email like crazy—eager to watch your reactions and rewatch it every week. What a great time! Thank you Frank!
