Massive fucking shoes to fill

Franklin

Put off watching this episode with you as long as possible. Some character deaths are just too big and my god, no one can fill Hershel's shoes.

Nicole

I love the long ramble. That’s a good point. Knowing the writing of this show, they would definitely bring back that one eye zombie to kill one of our characters later.

When rewatching shows I never skip an episode. But I do, of course, come across episodes that I'd really rather not watch. So instead of even hate watching them, I leave the episode running and do some chores. I am an excellent multitasker so I could hear you speaking in the background but I could easily tune out the Governor's complete infuriating bullshit and read instead. My SO does actually enjoy the psychos in this, being Shane and Gov man, but not because of their characters. Thank fuck for that. Nah, he says they are such good villains and the actors nailed it. He loves Jon Bernthal. A genuinely well done villain will win him over like that. So he is a fan of these episodes. Whereas I on the other hand can't seem to get past the rage inducing dialog and actions of these characters. It may be a race thing, he is only white ethnicities, and a class thing, he grew up comfortably. I did not. So we both grew up with very different perspectives and he doesn't have those parts that get stuck on such a thing. He can move on from it easily. Long ramble, short, I find his death immensely lacking every time. But if he had turned, he likely would have come back and killed someone again and I'd really rather not see him again.

🤣🤣🤣🤣skin crawl

Franklin

I'm late again this time, so all I'm gonna say is hearing my name come out of that man's mouth so many times makes my skin crawl. But also RIP Hershel, he will always be missed, truly the GOAT.

I like this a lot. rip

I know it feels like trauma porn (and I’m not saying it isn’t) but one perspective I decided to take after viewing this episode was what’s Rick’s mindset now and how will that shape our group moving forward? You thought the governor was having a redemption arc, but it was actually Rick the whole time. Listening to Rick’s speech, Hershel is so proud of him for choosing peace. That little smile was so heartwarming. And now we have to sit with the fact that Rick had this incredible arc and after trying it Hershel’s way and failing so badly that he’s lost their home and his family, his worldview may be shattered going forward. Not saying whether it is or not, but that’s the lens I moved forward in the series with. Anyway, this still stands as one of, if not the most heartbreaking losses in the series. This series is 11 seasons long and even though we lost him in season 4, Hershel remains a top 5 character for me for what he did in this season alone.

yeah this one was particularly brutal man. i remember being just as numb/drained as you by the end of 4x08 on my first watch, i couldn’t look away but was like "enough!! we get it!!! make it stop!!!!" agreed with everything you said re: the governor.
rip big hersh 💔💔 his smile during rick’s speech just breaks me every time. if anything i'm glad he got to see him finally "get" what he was trying to teach in 4x01 about people being able to change. and the fact that it all ties back to that first s4 episode with that woman in the woods makes it hit even harder. when rick told hershel “i almost became her” and the way the camera lingers on her here as a walker emphasized that foil this first half of s4 is basically just asking "can people come back?" (from grief, from illness, violence / the things they’ve done, etc.) over and over again. we see it with rick and the governor + in how hershel puts himself at risk to help the sick + how different characters handle grief and survival. even carol’s arc touches it in a twisted way like, where’s the line between survival and losing your humanity?
ep 4x07 really sets up the contrast between hershel's genuine belief in redemption (seen in rick) vs. the governor’s attempt at change that only masks the same violent core. as you pointed out: we reluctantly try to believe he might’ve changed, he plays house and acts like he’s starting over but by the end it’s clear it was all just surface-level. the old him was still there waiting. when rick says “we can all change” in the mid-season finale, he’s trying so hard to hold on to what hershel believes. which makes what happens next all the more devastating since as much as hershel was right (about some people), their world doesn’t care. the governor was too far gone and proved it again and again and then by taking hershel's life. the ep title labels the villain whhile also asking: what happens to us if we stop trying to believe we're past saving? (same as you, i enjoy this show because of the questions it brings up!) of course i can only appreciate alladat now with the distance of rewatches lol - same with michonne putting her katana through that mf. big up to her for doing exactly what she said she would!!

Also forgot to mention I completely feel you when you were talking about the way people defend the govener and disregard your feelings. It's like they think that we must not like the character because we don't understand them. We understand them, we just don't like them. It's completely valid. Also rip Big Herch.

This episode kills me everytime. The loss of the farm in the season 2 finale felt like it was symbolising that they can't live in the old world anymore. And it was so important to Herchel's arch. But the loss of the prison, felt so much worse to me. It was their first home inside the apocalypse. They built farms, they built a council, they built a community.

I’m making this statement based on Franklin’s assessing of “Brian/governors” character arc at 40:43 too prior to the next episode. My answer and I’m going to stand on it until the end is. “When someone shows you who they are the first time believe them!” Maya Angelou… I will leave it at that. Now I will watch the next episode, knowing I am standing firmly in my belief as life has shown me what Maya Angelou stated so clearly.

Frank, you hit the nail on the head. E7 was just there to show that the Governor was irredeemable. He was never going to get better. He never would have been able to protect that family either, because his ego would always get in the way. Even if some tiny part of him wanted to THINK that he wanted to be a better person, he was too self-centered and psychopathic to get there. When he was grieving before (when he was all beardy), instead of a wake-up call, it was all self-pity and no self-reflection. He reminds me of a villain in another show we just finished watching - [the not-Harp angel hunter] - always believing his motivations came from a place more honorable than a narcissistic need for power. The angel hunter was better at portraying it, though imo. Whenever [his victim] showed her contempt for him, he always looked surprised and wounded. Both he and the Governor are that lost in their delusions of grandeur. I liked the realism of him not being able to change because not everyone deserves a redemption arc. I definitely didn’t appreciate that the first time I watched this. I also forgot how hard it can be to witness all the human suffering. RIP, Hershel :(
