I wonder if Christopher Nolan was watching this episode and thinking, this little monologue time obsessed freak Matthew McConaughey is perfect for Interstellar

"do you know what happened between them?"
"what always happens, reality."
this feels like just another cop out from marty. as if true, loving relationships dont exist between men and women ever and they are all doomed to fail which is so not true. even now in the current timeline when he is telling this, after all he has grown and learned and accepted, he still sometimes makes excuses. and im not saying this to further make a dig at him, but definitely puts things into perspective that even as we grow and learn, there is always room for improvement within ourselves. we're not always as enlightened as we think we are.

Thanks for shedding more light on the physics theory. Super cool stuff. Our boy is well educated
And that's a good point

When Rust is demonstrating "time is a flat circle" with the smashed can and discussing how we are reborn again into the same life, etc., he is actually talking about a legitimate theory in quantum physics. The theory is called M-theory or M-brane theory.
M-theory (or "M-brane theory) is a theory in physics that unifies all consistent versions of superstring theory. So, Rust's discussion about extra dimensional beings and how they would view us in our space/time as existing in a flat circle with everyone in superposition, etc., all that is part of genuine quantum physics theory (he sounds like he is rambling some wild shit, but everything he's saying is in keeping with those scientific concepts). It sounds like some sort of dark twisted stuff from his psyche but it isn't -- so, given that the other detectives at the police station ...literally everyone (including Marty) have always had a problem with Rust's philosophical viewpoints, when they started to blame Rust I was thinking how ironic it was that the governor was going to start a task force for 'anti Christian crime' when, as is often the case in history, someone who has ideas outside of the accepted norm (like Rust) is being targeted and blamed because his ideas make people uncomfortable -- and since he makes people uncomfortable by challenging their ideas in ways which threaten their core views, they see him as bad. That was my FIRST thought -- because since day one, nobody in the police department likes Rust -- which is kinda odd because he does more actual police work than everyone else put together...but he thinks differently so they otherize him. HOWEVER... I also recognized at that moment that I was being biased because I'd already decided I liked Rust. And, as you said, from their perspective ...hey...people have been convicted on less evidence than what they have against Rust! And, sometimes when Rust is talking during the interview (especially if people don't know about the philosophies or theories from which Rust draws his ideas) he sounds like he might be the type of murderer who kills people because he was "trying to save them from this world.". Thus, after I checked myself, I was coming from the same place you are right now. 🤷
