Toranaga’s end game seems like a just one, and I agree that he cares deeply about some of the people who’ve been sacrificed, but if the history this novel was based upon is played out, there’s some villainy yet to be played out. When I first watched (and immediately rewatched) Shogun, I went down an internet rabbit hole to learn more about the real-life people that Mariko, Toranaga and Blackthorn are based on. Mariko was inspired by a noblewoman named Hosokawa Garcia, whose father like Mariko’s masterminded an infamous assassination. “Flowers are only flowers because they fall” is pulled from one of her poems.
