The Walking Dead 4 x 1-2 | Full-Length Reaction

The Walking Dead 4 x 1-2 | Full-Length Reaction

Comments

With Bob popping in, this is another episode where I thought: "I can't wait to see Frank's reaction!" What a funny treat after Tyrese shows up. These first couple of episodes are my favorite type of world building that shows the difficulty of bringing old-world civilization back when the central conflict isn't opposing a villain. You have to deal with things like food and housing sustainability, supply runs gone wrong, and contagions, etc. I knew this would hit different watching now after a global pandemic. But the fragility of the "democracy" they've built also hits hard. Now you have this mystery of the extrajudicial killings at the end, and it reflects how hard the democratic structure of their council is to keep when people are panicked. And even though they have a governing body, there's still a recognition of Rick's influence as a leader. Hershel, Carl, and Daryl point to it as a benefit to the group. Carol understands it in wanting to keep her activities with the kids from him. And Rick had to get to a point of trusting himself to opt into that part of himself again. The scene of Rick putting his gun back on gets me every time.

Thanks for all your kind words. It is very much appreciated. Concerning watching spinoff's. Yes people have brought it up before. I'm just going based on vibes. People have told me they are both good and bad. I'm going to continue watching as long as I feel like the writing and the stories are good. So we'll see when we get there

Franklin

Hi Frank, I’m not sure if someone asked already, or maybe you’ve mentioned it before. But are you open to watch other spinoffs of TWD after you’re done with the main show? Of course that’s way ahead in the future as you’re only at season 4. Loving your reactions! I like how you always have some good insights and comments. I don’t like comparing content creators, because I feel like everyone has their own style, but some of your thoughts about characters flaws, personalities and development are quite refreshing. One example I can give is about Lori. I must say I’ve jumped on the hate train quickly on my first watch and was giving her only surface level thoughts. After watching it with you, you made me realise- she wasn’t as bad as everyone (me included)was saying. She was trying to do good by her husband and her child. Anyway I’m rambling. Loving the vibes of this community ✌️

Kasia

ahhhh

sad sad sad

It always gets me when Rick is sacrificing his pigs. It’s a huge metaphor for his entire character—giving up the things that HE wants, the things he finds joy in, for the greater good and for the sake of his team. Rick can’t catch a break man 😭😭 Just let him raise his piggies 😭😭

Julia Timlin

So when the feral woman leads Rick to her camp she says “it’s just ahead.” ….fun little pun 😅

Now introducing... Farmer Rick. If you're collecting all of the Ricks we have Officer Rick, Ricktator Rick, and now Farmer Rick. We are experiencing many different eras of Rick. I appreciate that they showed us who Bob is so quickly. He struggles with alcoholism, but he has the strength, even at the end of the world, to resist the addiction -- he put it back, and that's so important. I can imagine that the immense guilt following what was just an accident, and impossible circumstances, would weigh on someone like him greatly. They also let us know he is an Army veteran; I think the stats are like 11% of veterans are known to suffer from substance use disorders, the majority of those being alcohol use disorder. It opens up a new perspective and story we haven't seen in TWD yet. I agree that Carol is based in wanting to teach the kids how to defend themselves, especially with how she lost Sophia, but the way she talks to Lizzie is too harsh; she's forgetting they are children. Rick is also valid with his experience raising Carl in the new world to want kids to be able to focus on more childlike pursuits. He is scared of his son losing his humanity. This draws a nice parallel to him fearing losing his own humanity and mind. He saw himself reflected in the negative parts of the Irish woman, Clara, but never acknowledged the good bits that also reflect. Love for her family, regret for the worst things she's done, and a struggle to move past her husband's demise. All of these reveal a good person, in my mind, but they were both put through too difficult a situation to fully maintain who they are. I love that Beth, even in her lack of reaction to her boyfriend dying, still carries this incredible optimism with her. She said she was happy to have known him, so rather than not caring or falling into despair, she finds the brightest part of the situation and focuses on it. Honestly, she is too good for the world of TWD, but she is much better equipped to handle it mentally now than most other characters. It's a huge contrast to when she wanted to end it, and it goes to show that someone in that dark place can come out the other side much stronger. I enjoy the conversation between all the people with medical experience assessing the illness. Just a very interesting discussion. The library is actually the prison library; most of the books aren't from Woodbury, and most of them are law books, which would be dull reading for sure. The scene with the pigs is one of the hardest for me to watch in the show. That and the horse in the first season are just so heartbreaking. I do appreciate them showing that he was also heartbroken, though; it was more lives he had to take, and this time they were lives he raised. I’m not sure if he could have built himself up to butcher them in that state of mind; I know I couldn’t. I think what kills me the most with the animal scenes is that they just don’t have any idea what’s going on or why they are being hurt; it’s just suffering, they don’t know they are being sacrificed for someone else’s life. All I have to say is I fucking love Tyreese and Sashaaaaa.

MegMegMegg

I hope Frank someday watch Lost, I love that show

LettyStar

Just saying, if you love timeskips, Lost is the show for you 😜 I hope we get to see you watch it someday!

Stefan and Erin S

Through the mf mud😭😭

Franklin

Yes Rick is officially off of vacation. I know he needed to take a break from the violence and do normal day to day activities, but it’s time to come back! Yes they be dragging him through the mud 😣

Tamara

I appreciate you so much for saying that. You guys feedback also helps a lot. Makes me realize that it's OK to take it slow and elaborate

Franklin

I don't think I've seen him in anything else. I'll look him up

Franklin

I'm surprised I remembered 'cause he looks so grown up here I feel your mind. I was so happy to see him

Franklin

gotcha

Franklin

for real, Maybe we will see Stringer soon👁️👁️

Franklin

It could be I love what you said about Tyrese character. It makes sense ah Clarice talking about the lambs, yes

Franklin

Alright I'll try to remember

Franklin

Nope one more: I don't think what Carol is doing is okay. That isn't her call, lying to parents is never okay, and manipulating a child into lying by omission because "you're not going to lie, you're just not going to tell him" is GROSS. I love Carol, but this is a pretty grave error in judgement. Should the kids be taught how to protect themselves now that they're not in Woodbury? Absolutely. But it should have been brought up in a meeting.

Frank, update us on Val's thoughts on TWD if you're still watching it with her, too. I like hearing her input.

Melissa

Pretty sure Bob is shivering from alcohol detox?? I love the choice to cast a man built like Chad Coleman to play Tyreese, who is a wonderful man with integrity, gentleness, and kindness . . . masculine traits that are often not valued by some . . . and showing him struggling with the killing of the walkers even in self defense. I believe there would be lots of people like this in a WD world, and I applaud them for giving Tyreese to us in a Chad Coleman package. (Hope that all makes sense!) Rick and the pigs reminded me of two things: 1. Jodie Foster in Silence of the Lambs talking about the lambs screaming. 2. Has anyone else read "A Day No Pigs Would Die"?

Melissa

Final final comment- I wonder why they didn't decide to move over to Woodbury? It seemed pretty safe and well-guarded, it had hot running water if I remember correctly, etc. I know there are probably bad memories attached, but it's better than a prison? And they could really fortify it even more. Also, HOW MUCH WOULD IT SUCK TO SURVIVE A ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE ONLY TO GET GOT BY A SWINE FLU?? That's soooo shitty. But like you said- realistic. Also also, the moment that gate started to give, they should have called for other people to make racket at another part of the gate, and killed them there, to take pressure off the weak part of the gate. Also, they know the pigs are sick anyway. 1:43:30 Jesus Rick, why not just inject yourself with swine flu??

First Name Ella

D'ANGELO!!!!!!! I totally forgot he was in the show, too. All the GOATs!

Melissa

Fun fact: The show was filmed on 16mm until 2021. They had to switch to digital because covid. Seasons 1-3 were a warmup. Strap in, my dude.😆

Alva

I’ve seen the walking dead so many times by now and I never realized that Patrick was Chris’s best friend from everybody hates Chris. Idk why I never recognized him but u saying that just blew my mind. Also another goat from the wire 🔥🔥 always love to see ur reactions, ik I said the same thing ab seeing Dennis but I was smiling so much when u saw Dee.

Matthew Arner

OMG that teenager (Beth's love interest? The one with Daryl and Michonne) is Kyle Gallner! He looks like such a baby here but this has to be after Jennifer's Body, and almost a decade after Veronica Mars (a show I HEAVILY suggest you watch, on or off the channel btw!! it's so much better than you'd think! It's amazing!). Anyway, it kind of looks like they made Kyle put on a few pounds to give his face that chubby younger look to it. He has been in some amazing indie movies lately. And yes, it's always nice to see a face from The Wire!

First Name Ella

Also Frank I just want to say, I love your thoughtful reactions. I watch a few others on and off, but you have absolutely become my #1. I love that you aren't afraid to pause and let your thoughts out. So many reactors will talk to one another over the show/film and will miss important moments because they're talking over it! As a viewer there's nothing more aggravating. And obviously no one is going to pick up on everything a first viewing. That's part of the joy of rewatches! But there's a difference between missing something small or subtextual, and missing something really big/important because you were talking and refused to pause. And just beyond that, it's so obvious you *get* everything you watch. It's soooo nice to be able to come here and relax and get my mind off of the wretched world for a little while every day. Thank you thank you

First Name Ella

good points

Franklin

Thanks for the time reference💛

Franklin

That's true. Hiding it from their parents is a different issue for sure yeah the slow drip of her back story is so worth it

Franklin

Thanks for sharing. That is so so fucked up

Franklin

So I just want to rant for a second about what happened to Andrea's character. Laurie Holden had a 9-season contract, but because she raised concerns about how they were developing her character on the show vs the comics (where she was a bad-ass) the then-producer (the first few seasons had a new exec producer every year; it's why every season feels like such a different vibe) who already had it out for her, decided to kill her off at the last minute. Glen Mazzara, the exec producer who killed her off, would later be fired for killing off characters he didn't have the authority to kill- Axel, Merle, and especially Andrea.

First Name Ella

yeah the writers really said let’s make sure rick never knows peace and let romance stay as dead as the walkers 😭 i also agreed with carol teaching the kids how to defend themselves but idk about not telling their parents. an adult asking kids to keep something from their parents is always weird to me i really appreciate the way michonne’s character is written - the restraint around her backstory makes her even more fascinating i like when shows take their time developing a character like that instead of rushing. the little drops here and there + danai gurira’s performance draws you in even more. "let the tale seduce you" type shit. i love it

fara

For real! I wonder how different this show would have been in a post-Covid world.

Ellen Noir

Oh, I've had the same conversation with family when TWD first aired....about walker poop and other bodily functions! I also worked in healthcare for just over 40 years before retiring so bodily functions and fluids, etc. were a normal conversation. We came up with several theories, but won't mention all the nastiness here. 😜 All I can say is that it must be one stinky, smelly universe with walkers around!! 😫

KimM

With Clara (Irish woodland ghost), the writers are yet again reminding us of another way this world can affect the people who survive in it. Thankfully, they’re not slipping into the common narrative of “with the passage of time, everyone’s just comfortable in their new environment now and their psychologies are no longer part of the story”. Most of our main people have gotten stronger, tougher, and more capable but depending on their circumstances and personality traits, some people break and others bend. The governor’s worst deep-seated characteristics festered and flourished. Shane’s loyalty didn’t survive the apocalypse because his brand of masculinity overpowered it and morphed into ruthlessness. Andrea sunk deeper into her self-assured facade. Lori was slow to adapt emotionally but maybe if she had lived longer, she might have gone through the same painful, drawn-out transition into hardened survivor that’s happening to Rick. Clara was probably one of those who was slow to adapt, so without the aid of a large group and few survival skills, losing the one person she had left was the final straw. Also, for reference, I think it’s been about 6 months since the Woodbury people arrived at the prison. The title of the first episode was kind of misleading because it’s referencing a common sign in factories, not the amount of time that’s passed between seasons 3 and 4. I don’t even think there was a mention of the time lapse, aside from Daryl telling Zach that he’s been trying for 6 weeks to guess what he did before the turn. I only know this because I looked at the TWD timeline lol

Ellen Noir

Epi 1. Indeed, Frank....the beginning of the episode looks so good. After several months have passed, it is good in the beginning of the episode to see a thriving community has been established in the prison. Enjoy seeing that Michonne is more mellow and emotionally expressive than in the previous season, cracking several smiles at Carl and Rick and even laughing at Zack's attempts to guess Daryl's former profession. Nice to see the demise of the Rick-tatorship and that the prison is now overseen by a council comprising of Daryl, Hershel, Glenn, Carol, Sasha and others. Loved Carol teasing Daryl over his new found popularity in camp by pointing out that "she liked him first". Wonderful to see Tyreese and Karen have progressed to an official couple status during the time skip. Sad that Beth lost Zack. Carol has become a badass teacher, showing the kids how to use knives and defend themselves, under the guise of "story time". But do think she should have told Rick and the council. I see it as a good thing, the children do need to know how to protect themselves and I'm sure she wished her daughter had learned and perhaps she would still be alive.  How deranged the human mind becomes for some....Clara wanting to feed Rick to her husband's head! Egads!  And now we see another sickness appears, a mystery illness? This led me to wonder... since we now know everyone carries the "zombie" virus, if contracting another virus, like the flu or cold, on top of that can be too hard on the body. Since the immune system is harboring/battling the zombie virus within a person, another virus on top of that can really be too much and then kill you. Frank, you questioned why Rick was staring a few times at the walker at the fence with the weird eyes...I noticed that when Patrick turned, his eyes looked similar compared to the eyes we usually see walkers have. So it made me wonder if the walker at the fence was carrying another virus in addition to the zombie virus and that is how it started to spread. Back for Epi 2 a bit later.

KimM

yayy season four finally!! one of the best ones imo!! so many new characters too oh i am EXCITED!!

Iris

Where do you know Bob from? I named every animal we had growing up. I knew they would be butchered and end up on the table, but I didn't care. By that time there would be baby cows, chickens, ducks, rabbits... But I never named anything that was dead. I'm with Carl on this. Beth was still mentally a child when this started. Brain still developing. She is a product of the world she is becoming an adult in. Dirty lady creeped me out from the start. I was thinking cannibal also. Somehow that wouldn't have been as gross as wanting to feed Rick to her old man's head to me. I don't count her as a loss. She wasn't part of our squad. I'm glad Carol is teaching the kids to defend themselves, but she shouldn't have asked Carl to lie to his Dad. She was also doing it behind the parents' backs. Not really cool. I wonder sometimes if they had cast anyone but Dania to play Michonne how different the show would be. I genuinely like Michonne, she's a bad ass, she's good with kids, she can keep a secret... She fits in perfectly with every other character (except the governor). I feel like she's looking for him because he killed Andrea. You know she would go to the mat for a friend. Talking about the dead and their fluids. My kids and I are in healthcare and we watched this together mostly back when it aired. Of course the subject came up... if the walkers are constantly eating everything when/how does it come back out? They don't get bigger. I'll stop before it gets grosser.

Doc Herch needs to teach everyone about universal precaution and do a strict safety protocol for infection control ASAP! No communal water, cooking, eating everyone temperature checked and lymph nodes checked by him every 8 hours for infection control and safety of group starting with the babies and children, then the child caregivers. Boil all clothes, bedding and get everyone out side in the sun for vitamin D.
