Yay! I love that you got a chance to see one of my top 20 favorite movies. I remember being so excited when Frances McDormand got the Oscar for this- she's so damn cool. One of the brilliant things about the movie is the contrast, as you noted, between Marge/her life/marriage and the corruption/greed/violence she investigates and fights . While it would be easy for a movie to take the cynical, clever-clever stance of making her into a naive doofus, the Coen Bros chose a more profound route: Marge is not naive, stupid or ridiculous- she is sharp, well-aware of the ills of humanity, and chooses to be kind, honorable and loving. She is one of my favorite heroines of cinema.

The accents are probably elevated just a touch to capture the rhythms and cadences of the Minnesotan/North Dakotan accent and to highlight the extremely literary style of writing that the Coens have. And speaking as someone who lives in the area now, people still speak that way! Fun fact is that the actress who plays the kidnapped wife is actually from Fargo, ND and is speaking in her native accent. The Coen Bros did an incredible job writing and directing this film.

Trigger warning that it involves a very racist cop character

Thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie with you again after all this time and hearing your comments. Frank, you had the same look on your face as I did when first seeing the wood chipper scene....I just can't imagine!! 😮😬 The one part I held my breath was when she had that lunatic in the back of her police car. 😳 I was frantic...I was waiting for that psychopath to somehow find a way to attack her even when behind the cage....so glad that did not happen. And glad it is not a true story. https://www.slashfilm.com/1249767/coen-brothers-fargo-based-around-real-crime/

I'd like to recommend another great movie with Frances McaDormand and other amazing cast, "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri".
I'm not sure it'll do well here but if you watch I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Isn't Marge amazing!? I love her so much. And Norm too. So proud of his mallard getting picked. So sweet how they treat each other.
I love that Marge is impressive but not the usual badass. She's super smart, she's tough as nails, she knows what she wants... and she's also sweet, and unassuming, and plain. She's such a great character.
In a worse movie, she'd be mysterious and have a bad past and be aloof and have some one-liners.
But this movie is so well written! All these people feel so very real.

Gah, I've really no truck with the young'uns and, as such, I hesitate to even dip my toeseses into the endless abyssal nothingness from whence their fucking insane lexicon (*cough* brainrot! *cough*) was borne forth from -- But, well , fuck it --
Frances McDormand IS Mother. 💅 She came, she ate, she left no crumbs.
... uhhh, skibididibidi!
- Forreal, though; the oh-so-specific vibes of this movie are impeccable 🤌 For me, it exists within such a particular wavelength; the only other movie I can bring to mind atm that makes me react similarly is 'Magnolia'. ❤️

It's not really based on a true story- it's a lie! But man what a great flick. Also, the character of Cherita Chen in Donnie Darko was inspired by the character Mike Yanagita in this film- someone who, at first, seems like they have nothing to do with the story but actually inspires a big lightbulb moment for the main characters. In this film, it shows Marge that people lie about anything, which causes her to reexamine her original interview with Jerry, and in Donnie Darko, it's that he was a hero to someone, love is everywhere, people deserve to be protected and saved.

Love this movie. The score, the rhythm of the dialogue, the beautiful shots, the absurd humor. It’s just a masterpiece.

The Coens! When they're in top form, there's nothing like it.

Am I insane, or is Stan Grossman the name of the agent in Little Miss Sunshine played by Bryan Cranston? Must be an homage right?
