I accidentally figure something out and say it as a theory only to find out later that it was a spoiler. It’s never my intent to spoil anything for anyone. But I’m going to step out on a limb here. So just in case spoiler alert. The beginning of the last episode when they were reading the village for big brain. I happen to notice water cleaning up the wooden deck where the captives ( the Englishman crew were being kept in a pit below, it was tinged in red as if it were being blood washed away, making me instantly think that his crew was dead. Sorry if it was a spoiler it certainly isn’t meant to be.

Viewers were divided when it aired: I remember a significant portion were convinced it wasn't Mariko and acted like those of us who were convinced it was her were just thirsty shippers lol

It is also translated variously as weight, dignity, and importance and connotes restraint and moral rigor. It also conveys a sense of responsibility and commitment to the task.

2025-09-02 21:29:58 +0000 UTCToronaga is definitely Big Brain--in the book they make it explicit that his over-the-top cheer for Yabushige/Yabushige's army on the beach is solely to keep him off balance until he can get back on the ship, because he knows if Yabushige pauses for one minute to think, he'll realize it's his chance to take Toronaga prisoner and just give him to Ishido, cementing his own high place. But the character works because he's not perfect! His big plan to get out of Osaka, for example, wouldn't have worked, and he'd have been killed, but for the accident of Blackthorne seeing him and then saving the day. Re: Blackthorne being likable--in the book he's actually much more refined/high class (at least for a European)--and I think that was their plan for the show... but they liked the energy this actor brought to it so much they adapted on the fly. Brings some much needed laughs! Bit with the next morning--Mariko pretended not that it was his consort, but that they'd hired a courtesan for him. If you think about it I'd imagine you can come up with some reasons they might not want to acknowledge the truth!
