Just subscribed for this but since we're here I'll probably go back and watch The Good Place with you as well! You're a great reactor <3 You going in completely blind is wild though wow I was hyped for this show from the first trailer release. It's one of my favourite shows of all time. It's not perfect but for me, it's damn near close!

2025-07-29 17:43:30 +0000 UTCi’m so excited to finally be watching this— honestly not sure what’s held me back all these years. it already reminds me a lot of the watchowski’s 2012 movie “cloud atlas” (one of my favorite movies), the way it balances and connects the narrative between multiple main cast and locations. doona bae (the actor playing sun bak) was also part of the main cast of that movie, and she was phenomenal. i can also see similarities in the handling of queer and class and racial subject matter. anyways im already hooked.

2025-07-28 13:58:06 +0000 UTCThis show definitely has Heroes vibes, totally agree! That includes the cancellation that Netflix said was about the budget to viewership ratio being too large a gap. It had an incredibly large budget and actually filmed all over the world (shows just never do that anymore). What frustrates me about Netflix is their refusal in this show (and others) to translate foreign languages in a show mainly in English. We get "speaks foreign language" in a show with so many languages instead of a clear translation. Something I love about the show is the dichotomy of the vibrant, saturated, unbridled moments of pure joy and the deeply dark and introspective moments of confusion and fear. It's juggled so well, as you can see clearly in just these first 2 episodes. Will's dad, Nomi's mom, and Wolfram's dad all piss me off so much. At least we have Capheus and Kala's parents to provide some balance so not all the parents of our Ensemble cast are assholes. You are in for such a wild ride!

The first time someone went to war for me, in front of me, I felt the earth shift beneath my feet, because I hadn't really faced until that moment how little I'd been settling for. That (sad!) realization is also the start of a whole new, more wonderful world, where you know how to identify your lovers and your friends for real. *I do want to note: I get why they had to sort of make up a niche-to-nonexistent politics for Nomi to have ("we should drop the LGBT because it divides us!") in order to make it fit the themes of the show, but for anyone wondering, it's actually the common terf position, not the common or even uncommon trans position, that LGBT should be changed (...to LGB, since they don't believe in the 'legitimacy' of transness).

One of the most interesting characters on that show. A friend of mine in college thought he was the most beautiful man to ever walk the earth. I can’t disagree lol but I really haven’t seen any of his work outside of Lost. Excited to see more. I noticed this was written and directed by the Wachowskis, who also made the Matrix movies.

I went in to this show blind as well and was hooked from the first episode. I grew up in rural kentucky and thought I was straight until I met my first gf at 19. This show came out 3 years later and it meant the world to me and so many others to see queer representation. Side note: The first episode of this show aired June 5, 2015. Gay marriage was federally legalized in the US June 26, 2015. This show was a big deal at the time. Tides were turning but showing trans lesbian sex in first 5 minutes? Bold. Legendary.

You're right that intolerant people speaking out on stuff can be bad, but when it comes to neutral reaction channels, I do wish that people with platforms would at least show the show so that audiences who may not see the show otherwise can be exposed to a show that's so humanizing of the queer experience.
