I'm there with you 100%. . These shows are so amazing but sometimes that "horror" label makes people like us don't even want to give it a second look. And that is sad. If anything this is a "thriller" to me, so far at least. I enjoy that we are watching it together for the first time. Absolutely, something aint right here. You should absolutely go watch episode 3 and 4. I just posted it last night
Franklin

I'm watching it the first time with you, Frank. I didn't hear anything about this show, but that the genre is horror. Till the end of the second episode I would not have considered this as horror. An island with a little town and some weird people. That reminded me of "Twin Peaks". But now, after the second episode, it is quite clear that something is not right here. It's apparently not the typical horror series. I'm now very interested to see how it continues.

You made a point earlier that I’m about to clumsily reiterate. I like horror and sci-fi when the outside element is used to explore humans and our relationships. The Walking Dead, The Leftovers, The Haunting of Hill House, Game of Thrones, Westworld, this series, are about what it means to be human. All good fiction is about us.

That first scene represents my worst fear: being responsible for a horrible accident. I was driving to work on a city street once, paying the degree of attention that we do on a familiar drive (bored) when a child on a bicycle darted out from between parked cars. I slammed on brakes and missed hitting him by a heartbeat. Terrifying. I don’t think the child even noticed, but in 25 years I’ve never forgotten that moment. When passengers get frustrated with my too-cautious driving, I tell them I’m watching for the unexpected child on the bike.

I'm late to the party, but work has been busy this past week. This show is my fave of the Flanaverse and resonates with me very personally. I grew up in a tiny town on the beach where the Catholic Church had a considerable presence, and it wasn't exactly doing good things for the town either. Watching this show was a revelation, and I can't wait to see what you think of the rest of it!

If you go back to the potluck scene, you were looking down during the brief shot when sOmEoNe set a plate down in front of the dog 👀 I find it interesting that you describe not being into horror, and yet you love Flanagan's work, Hannibal, and IWTV. Is it actually horror you don't like, or jump-scares/gratuitous violence/gore? I never thought I liked horror until getting into more psychological and artistic horror shows and movies, now I'm very much into it!

Glad youre starting here, because while the next show after Hill House, Bly Manor, is really good, its similar to Hill House, whereas this show and Fall of the House of Usher are a little more unique, but Flannigan is the best to ever do it, all his shit is fantastic

As a man of no particular faith, I always found the answer to the "Why does God allow suffering and tragedy if he's so benevolent" question to be rather simple to answer; because it makes us better people. Going through awful times will build up kindness and empathy as we heal, and its what allows us to extend ourselves to others in their times of need. If there is a God, then they know people have to push through on their own, and with one another, to become their better selves. I don't think its possible to understand what it really means to be human if you don't look tragedy in the face and move on with a purpose.

*Speculation, not Spoilers*
I have never seen Midnight Mass or any Mike Flanagan shows so I am completely enraptured & intrigued like you Frank as to where this mystery may be heading. My own theories so far: The creature brought to the island in the trunk by Fr. Paul is a demon of some sort. Whatever pact or connection it has made with the priest allows him to have special powers & insights so that he can heal Leeza & know more than he should about the island residents. The demon drinks the life force & possibly souls of all it consumes. Now feasting on humans it will grow stronger & the powers it gives to his acolyte & sponsor will grow as well. I think the former pastor, Msgr.Pruitt, was killed by this demon or his “priestly” familiar in order to wreak their havoc & corruption on an isolated vulnerable population. I only hope that our troubled lead, Riley with his curse of supernatural “sight” can save those he loves from this evil.

Flanagan had to get help for his alcohol problem, and one of his worst fears at the time was getting behind the wheel while intoxicated and killing someone. The character of Riley must be so close to his heart, and I think you can tell from the writing. The actor does such a fantastic job too - I adore this role for him.

I have never seen this! I had to turn it off for a while. I was that triggered. I live in Alaska, 1989 the Exxon Valdez destroyed a small town and many many lives to this day. That area has not recovered. You can dig down 1 foot and the oil still seats up. The child in the wheelchair I had assumed was hit by the town drunk before later finding out she was accidentally shot. 30 years ago I was left a quadriplegic by a drunk driver his fifth DUI. I will spare everyone the details with the exception I was left upside down in icy cold November Alaskan water knowing I was going to die. It took them 45 minutes to extricate me and get me 2 miles to the only hospital. I have lived in small roll Alaskan towns and so much of this is extremely familiar. We have many churches in this town, but one church is always neglected and those who go to that church many look down upon them and detest them, the Russian orthodox church even their graves from before we were bought as a territory by the US from USSR are constantly vandalized. I’m going to stay on this journey, taking it in as I can. Emotionally digest being thrown back into so many different time periods that dramatically changed my life. I never expected this type of reaction so visceral within myself. I thought that I had conquered all the dark corners that my broken body reminds me of every day, but it would seem I still have some work to do. I am up to the task as I believe as long as you are alive it is your responsibility to grow to your higher calling up and until the last moment of this part of my transition in this journey of my life. The movie has excellent writing, excellent casting and of course excellent company.

Only for fellow fans of Stephen King's "IT":
Bev Keane = combo of Beverly (Marsh) and when Bev returns to her childhood apartment as an adult, there's the old woman Mrs. Keane. (Or something like that). I wonder if this is intentional or coincidental. Is "Midnight Mass" based on a book like Hill House was or is it an original script?

I became absolutely obsessed with this song while watching this show. It's a Neil Diamond song I hadn't heard prior. A definite jam: https://youtu.be/zySAW_cOfQ8?si=NCdOIc2EDNQHa7Jm
"Soolaimón was a word Neil Diamond learned when he studied African culture at the Kenyon Mission, the United Nations and the African Studies department at UCLA. Soolaimón can mean “hello,” “welcome,” “good-bye” and “peace be with you.” The lyrics offer images of the cycles of night and day, and a sense of the sacredness of that cycle: “God of my day… Lord of my night.” There is an abiding trust that the “day shall provide.” from https://jilldennison.com/2022/11/30/%E2%99%AB-soolaimon-%E2%99%AB/
