I'm very happy you posted your ramble. Always love revisiting the intricacies of this show

Franklin

I realize I'm like half a year late, but oh well, I'll post my silly ramblings anyway lmao In my opinion, Abigail effectively serves as the voice of Will's innermost thoughts in this episode. Her reprimands to him for not coming clean when given the chance, her desire to immediately seek out Hannibal again, her easy forgiveness despite all the horrible things Hannibal has done; they're all Will's. They're the thoughts and feelings Will wishes he didn't have, but still does. And it's easier to interrogate those desires—and eventually follow them all the way to Europe—if he can do so through the lens of Abigail, rather than admitting to himself that even after everything, he still wants to go to Hannibal. Will saying "The wrong thing being the right thing to do was too ugly a thought" very much reminds me of Bedelia telling Hannibal "You no longer have ethical concerns, you have aesthetical ones" and Hannibal responding "Ethics become aesthetics". We've seen Will refer to murder as "ugly" before in the show, but he rarely calls it "wrong" or "bad". I think he knows that he SHOULD feel like murder and violence are inherently bad, but he doesn't. He's the same as Hannibal in that respect; they both view ethics through the lens of aesthetics. The difference is that Will genuinely tries not to find murder fun and sexy, while Hannibal went and made it his main hobby lmao.

This show is 1000x better than the books and the movies. No disrespect to the greats Anthony Hopkins and Brian Cox, however Mads Mikkelsen is the best Hannibal Lecter in my opinion. And I don't mind debating about it lol so make sure you bring facts.

Ken Thomas

I like that. For goodness is very expensive

Franklin

Interesting. I just assumed it was some rich people shit

Franklin

Most sus thing about Bedelia is how she keeps walking into those shops and not paying for anything she walks out with.

The concept of forgiveness is so tricky in Hannibal. Them both saying “I forgive you” is as genuine as all the manipulation and bloodshed. If they can’t forgive each other, how can they ever forgive themselves? But forgiveness doesn’t free them of having to pay a price. Hannibal told Will he forgave him then slashed Abigail’s throat. Will has finally told Hannibal the same, so how much does his forgiveness cost?🤔 Forgiveness is very expensive in this show lol. Excited for the next episodes :)

Tommie

Exactly! And I doubt this is the last time will wii see Abigail

Franklin

haha damn

Franklin

I mean I've seen long armpit hair but Jesus! That she was probably the same length as the hair on his head lol I acknowledge that it's definitely there. I just couldn't see it earlier cuz I didn't have all that extra context

Franklin

Thank you. I don't think there's anything that show can do that I will hate

Franklin

Thank you. I'm glad you're a part of it. Can't wait to hear your thoughts later

Franklin

lol yappp

The Existential Shrew

It’s possible they used this illustration because hannibal turned a man’s corpse into an anatomical heart and not because the drawing represents leonardo's conception of ideal body proportions (I only found a couple examples where the vitruvian man is referred to as ‘’the perfect man’’). But I like to interpret it this way because antony is presented as the ‘’perfect man’’ for hannibal.

"Will must feel safe because he knows Hannibal won't kill him . . .he can cut your stomach open though"

I'm really enjoying rewatching all these seasons with you Frank and the rest of the Patreon family. I've watched this show since day one and it's exciting to be apart of this watch party. With that being said I'll save my comments until the end. Enjoy the show and we'll talk later.

Ken Thomas

Nice breakdown. I never realized Hannibal was folding the heart from the literal perfect man. Absolutely brilliant writing!

Ellen Burger

I'm glad you're still enjoying it, not everyone loves S3 but I and many others do.

*Trauma voice* The snails, man... oh god, not the snails again😱

🚨 NOT FOR FRANKLIN: I really do not like the first half of the season at all. It's so pretentious and self-indulgent. Your explanation helps that make sense. Thanks!

Melissa

Original viewers back in the day had to wait 1 year from May 2014 until June 2015 to find out who had survived the S2 finale. Bryan Fuller does sometimes likes to tease Hannibal fans and boy, watching Ep3.1 as good as it was to watch Hannibal & Bedeila's antics, was still torture to everyone waiting anxiously to find out what happened to Will, Jack & Alana. **NOT PLOT, BUT SEASON STRUCTURE SPOILERS BELOW** A little heads up for Season 3 which is very different than Seasons 1 or 2. Partially because Bryan Fuller had been given pretty strong hints by NBC execs that this would be the final season, he chose to split it into 2 distinct parts and make it with less concern for the preferences of those executives. He told writers & directors for the first 7 Eps to film them like a "pretentious Italian style horror movie". While many enjoy the dreamy style with extra artistic and symbolic moments, other fans prefer a more straight forward narrative. Episodes 8 through the 13 do not have this same feel or style.

Your armpit dreads comment absolutely sent me, best laugh of my week! I distinctly remember how many fans, always thirsty for a shirtless Will Graham, made similar observations when the episode aired 🤣🤣🤣 Also when you were talking about people offering you different perspectives on the homoeroticism of Hannibal, I was 100% ready to celebrate that we converted you. I've always said "everyone gets to Hannigram in the end." But no, still we wait...

Amanda Winstead

Ah, Anthony... Also known in the fandom as, "WalMart Will", or my favourite, " Won't". 🤣

Ellen Burger

while rewatching the end of s2 with you a piece of dialogue stuck out to me: in one of the eps, Hannibal says "an imago is an image of a loved one buried in the unconscious, carried with us all our lives" which immediately made me think of this Abigail

Will’s attachment to abigail being about projection, repression, and the symbolism of hannibal killing her: I don’t think will truly cares for abigail, at least not on the level he’d like to believe. Abigail was a reminder of his humanity (like louis’s attachment to claudia was partly about his attachment to humanity). I think abigail was the last reminder of the person he was or trying so hard to be. His idea of care was misplaced, he wanted to protect the idea of the girl he’d saved from her father rather than a young girl who’s never been anything more than a pawn. Will says he thinks he’d make a good father, but he’s self-destructive and so is hannibal, so it’s no wonder abigail dies the way that she does. She never had a chance with them, the idea of them being a happy family is an illusion. She represents the self we project onto others, a fantasy standing in the way of the truth of our natures, so hannibal killing her is also a death of these idealistic delusions (a death of the illusion will believed himself to be). It’s why in season 3, when will is still desperately trying to hold onto her, she’s nothing more than a ghost. The result of will’s hallucination of abigail was that he got to the place where he was able to let go of his grief for her and embrace the true nature of his relationship with hannibal. Which is why the next thing he does is look for hannibal in the catacombs. Abigail and hannibal were more comfortable around each other than will and abigail. Abigail was cautious and afraid of will, which is symbolic of will being afraid of himself. Maybe will was talking with his perception of abigail this episode, or maybe he was talking to himself. The other alternative is that it was really her ghost because the priest saw her.

RE ep.2 correcting dialogue: there is a double-helix meaning Confine me =/ come find me. The woods are lovely dark and deep...and miles to go before [they] sleep. And, that Walking-antler creature is some Francis Bacon nightmare fuel with a dose of bittersweetness of being Hannibal's broken heart made animate (and prowling).
