Weekly question: Have you ever disliked something and then changed your mind?
- CHEESE! Growing up in Nigeria, we didn't have cheese (fun fact I learned in nutrition class: some of the bacteria required to curdle milk to create cheese don't exist in some climates) Anyhoo.. I live in the Midwest now, and I never understood the appeal or hype of cheese. UNTIL I attended this bougie-ass fundraiser for my wife's job about 2 years ago. And they had some fancy ass cheese as part of the refreshments. I had some of the cheese and crackers and boy oh boy, I was enlightened! I can't remember the name but it was smokey. I think it was Gruyère. FIRE🔥
Many thanks my friends. Stay wonderful🌸

2025-01-24 01:40:06 +0000 UTCCorn. I know it’s like, the fool proof kid vegetable choice, but I couldn’t stand it. The texture w the little teeny soft kernels in the middle just tripped me out… so many weird layers lol. Growing up in the 80’s I’m ngl, I didn’t even know vegetables were edible without being canned first🤣🤣 My mom is a great cook but there wasn’t anything she could do to canned corn to make me like it. I wouldn’t even eat corn on the cob from crawfish boils (we’re from south Louisiana so we had seafood boils all the time) because I was convinced it was the same. It wasn’t until I was probably 17-18 and on a trip w my friends family that I tried grilled fresh corn on the cob covered in sea salt and butter (it felt rude not to try it as the host was so proud of her dishes) and holy crap, it’s all I wanted to eat for like a year after that🤣🤣 so delicious! After a while, if prepared well I could appreciate it even in its most unappealing form😬🤷🏻♀️ So excited to wrap up Hill House tonight!! I cannot wait to hear your thoughts!

2025-01-24 00:21:35 +0000 UTCClearing my Thursday night for your Hill House final watch! Tomatoes! Hated them when I was a kid, think it was the juice and the goopy inner texture I hated, but I’ll add tomatoes to anything now 😂 don’t even remember when I made the switch but it was a known thing growing up how much I hated tomatoes

2025-01-23 22:37:42 +0000 UTCAnswer to question: good boys/men. (as opposed to bad boys...you know the type). I guess I never "disliked" good guys...but I didn't appreciate them as I do now!

2025-01-23 07:28:49 +0000 UTCAbsolutely fried plantains are better than french fries. No competition at all. Here's a quick recipe: you don't have to have all the ingredients. You can use whatever you have at home for seasoning. https://youtube.com/shorts/lMviiY8CoaQ?si=61D0tNcfgq5qdjoJ

2025-01-21 17:32:17 +0000 UTCOooh, I *adore* fried plantains. A Dominican lady introduced them to me and taught me how to make them, and they're so amazing! Dare I say better than french fries? But I've never tried Jollof rice. From what I gather, it seems a) amazing, and b) one of those dishes where every home has its own variation and tricks that they swear by. Do you have a recipe you could recommend?

2025-01-21 15:35:02 +0000 UTCIt's weird, but it always feels heartwarming to hear Spanish in English contexts! I don't know if you've experienced this, but I find that I'm more "patriotic" (not the right word, but like, I am more proud of my country?) when I'm outside of Spain than in! In my day to day over here, I see all the lacks and irritations, and as a translator I am very "foreign-inclined", always curious about other cultures. But then when I'm abroad, or in places where English is the main language, and I hear some Spanish or someone mentions liking my country, my heart swells a little! Lol

2025-01-21 15:32:54 +0000 UTCI didn’t like olives!! I grew up in America and olives to me were just not it!! Fast forward to now living in the UK and being friends with a bunch of Italians and Greeks…. I feel proud of myself for giving them a try because wow! The variations and the FRESHNESS is on another level. I legit love olives now! There are some that I still don’t care for— especially this particular Turkish kind with a strong and bitter seasoning— but the buttery taste of a nice Greek/Italian olive is just divine. Then going to those countries and seeing the trees and how old they are.. man I’m rambling! 🤣 TLDR; Olives!!

2025-01-21 08:38:19 +0000 UTCAs a born and raised Midwesterner, I apologize for everything about us, except the cheese. Cheese is delicious. Also, first time commenter, and I just wanted to say you are incredible. The depth and insight you have watching things is wonderful. I don't really follow many reaction channels or things like that, but watching your videos is more like sitting down with a friend and having a discussion while watching. It also helps you seem to have similar tastes to me and most of my friends don't. It's been really nice to have a space to enjoy nuanced talk of my favorite shows like IWTV, Hill House, and The Good Place. It's encouraging me to pick shows like Hannibal up again too, since I stopped watching because I had no outlet for analysis. Not food, but growing up I was very contrarian and wouldn't listen to most music. I'm not ashamed to admit I was just being an elistist brat of a child. I've really let myself embrace all kinds in the past few years and gone back to artists I swore I didn't like (mostly female pop because ~society~) and now I have an autographed Taylor Swift CD 😂 Growth is good.

2025-01-21 02:54:50 +0000 UTCBig shout out to your mom for bringing y’all the goodness of tomatoes. I love tomatoes. I could eat them like apples. Interesting. I’ve never thought about it. Now that you say it yeah, a lot of east Asian foods that I know of don’t have any sign of dairy. Suggestion for a nice entry-level Nigerian food: Jollof rice and fried plantains.

2025-01-21 02:53:35 +0000 UTCThis right here! Absolutely hated the way they smell, until I had it one day at a restaurant. It was covered with a honey sauce and dried onions. Omg!!

2025-01-21 02:43:37 +0000 UTCA lot of the metal music that my brothers listened to I used to hate, but now I find I like a lot. Not sure if I just hated the music out of spite, but I eventually changed.

2025-01-20 02:04:37 +0000 UTCi used to dislike watermelon as a child. except not really. i had never had a watermelon, but i knew my older brother hated them. thinking he was the coolest person in the world and wanting to be just like him, i decided i also hated watermelon. then one day i was staying with my grandma and she offered me sliced fruit, with watermelon in it, and we were told to never reject food adults gave us. i was so surprised to find out it tasted alright. still not my favorite fruit by any means but i can enjoy them occasionally

2025-01-19 23:28:13 +0000 UTCHmmm... Interesting question. I think tomatoes for me? School lunches here were a lot of cold spaghetti with tomato sauce that was by then dry, or fish in tomato sauce that was very overcooked (I don't blame the lunch ladies, they had a lot to do!). Since then, both my sister and I (went to the same school, obvs) have developed an aversion to Tomato sauces, and never really liked them in general. Until my mom planted a small tomato plant and *those* tomatoes were amazing! Ripe, juicy, flavorful!! I didn't know they actually tasted like that! 😅 It's fascinating to learn about how cheese doesn't happen in Nigeria! As sadly am lactose intolerant (it's genetic), I always look for cuisines that don't normally use cheese, instead of trying to find substitutes. I've learned to make a lot of East Asian recipes, because there's usually no dairy at all. So now I have to find out about Nigerian food! And good luck with the business you have to take care of, hope it goes well. And "De nada"! That's "you're welcome" in Spanish because you said "Gracias" and it always makes me smile when people speak Spanish, even when it's casually like that! Always fun.

2025-01-19 22:53:24 +0000 UTCBoth versions are amazing! I'm just gonna drop a not-spoilery tip so you don't get lost (I've heard other people get a bit confused with the timeline): blue tones are in the "present" and warmer orangey tones are in the "past". Enjoy it, is a really great movie!!

2025-01-19 22:45:31 +0000 UTCI am also a 1994 fan, but when I did watch 2019 at the urging of a friend, I loved it, too.

2025-01-19 20:58:13 +0000 UTCI was selfishly hoping for 1994, but that's because my middle aged self is emotionally attached to that version. 2019 will be a first watch for me 🙃

2025-01-19 20:34:51 +0000 UTCMy mom is from India and all the curries she cooked growing up were so spicy, I couldn't even taste any of the flavour! I hated Indian food until I went to university and tasted it at a milder heat level, now it's one of my favourite kinds of cuisine
