Celebrating 2024!

Hey everyone, it's New Year's Eve 2024 and a wonderful time to cap off another wonderful year under the brush and reflect on the projects, lessons, and all the amazing new artists I've met. I enjoyed this time gathering all the images of completed models and compiling them into one big collage. A tour of work that I can reflect on not only the outcomes of each piece, but also the various challenges, refined techniques, and discoveries through their process. And also a great moral boost, as so...

Ho Ho Ho 🎅

Hey everyone! I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas & Hapy Holidays!

This year has been amazing on the brush with the growth I’ve experienced through some memorable pieces. As well as the biggest gift coming in the form of love and support from all you Patreons and this amazing community that has formed around miniatures. Whether you’ve joined me for a month, brand new to the Patreon, or have followed my work from the start of the Pro Palette. You have been an imp...

Champions of Critterfolk!

Hey everyone, this week's tutorial is on an adorable and heroic miniature that I had the pleasure of both painting and using as a model subject in my most recent workshop, The Champions of Critterfolk! With a primary focus on painting the head, fur textures, as well as his red cape. Thanks to all my students who attended with amazing energy and enthusiasm to learn more about our wonderful medium of miniature painting.

Avatar of Khaine pt.2

The Avatar of Khaine returns in part 2 of this tutorial series. As we left from painting the heat of the Avatar, we will now go into details of the cooler elements. Along with a Photoshop dive into the completed miniature, more of the make-up aspects and concepts that make the complete painting are explained. The colour palette remains the same from part one with the additions of:
Lilac(AK), Voilet Blue(AK), Dark Green(AK), Samauri Green(Kimera)

Palette cleanser.

With the Avatar wrapped up, I was in the mood to take a deeper dive and explore the rest of the Kimera paint range with my recent purchase of their expansion set 1. Colours for me are a real key aspect of painting, and I think it's important to use your colour palette to help express yourself in one way or another. And I think the path to becoming better with colour is the active use of them. But when I first bought the initial Kimera paint release several years back, I had a mixed and somewh...

The Avatar of Khaine!

Hey everyone, happy Friday and to cap the end of the week, my Avatar of Khaine is finally complete! What a trip this model was both in the feelings of nostalgia, encompassing the remanence of my early days as a graffiti artist, and battling pace with repetition. Overall I'm quite happy with how this piece has turned out. The mix of looser painting, stylized brushstrokes, and going hard with the contrast between both value and temperature made me feel like I was in comfortable territory. But ...

Avatar of Khaine - Heat of the Daemon pt.1

After a steady week of painting Khaine's avatar, I present the first part of his tutorial. Painting the head of the daemon, or more simply putting on how I've illustrated the heat with lessons in brushstrokes used, a full walk-through of each colour mix, and notes of placement and closing stages in preparations for tackling the cooler areas. I hope you enjoy this series as much as I have had on the brush creating it!

Paint List: Magenta(Kimera), Red Oxide(Kimera), Mephiston Red(Citadel...

From the Ashes🔥🔥🔥

The Avatar of Khaine is a steady process this week under my brush. I am working my way through each flaming hot leg that has fire spitting out and also painting the cooler contrasting parts of the leg armour he wears. I hope that with my tutorials and my emphasis on colour temperature, this miniature will surely bring those points in even stronger!

Starting next week, the Avatar will be coming under the camera lens and there will be 2 parts to this tutorial series. Part one will be abou...

Stormcast Challenge - Blue Reflective NMM pt.3

We are back with the third installment of the Stormcast Challenge and painting the Blue Reflective NMM.

Building on the first 2 videos, we take an interesting turn by adding a couple of new coloured reflections to capture further how this finish picks up on other environmental hues around our subject. The general hues of the blue atmosphere are our main reflection, joined with shades of green coming from the left and some warmer darker brown hues from below and to the right. All interac...

UPDATE

With next week's part 3 of the Stormcast Challenge coming. I wanted to show you what is coming as we turn our brush toward the Eldar Avatar of Khaine! Taking a looser approach to brushstrokes having a lot of fun with stylized textures, and temperature contrast. With a lot more parts to paint, I'll be visiting this under my camera lens to show you the heart of the painting, and teaching this in a near future tutorial!

Just a short one today, lots of tutorial editing, and more Avatar bru...

My Apologies

Hey everyone, this is an update to let you know that I will have to delay the release of Part 3 of the Stormcast Challenge with the blue reflective NMM video until next week. This is simply due to the majority of the video footage that I recorded being slightly out of focus, making it difficult to see what's going on. I have been trying my best to edit and cut parts throughout to still make a tutorial viable as a learning piece; but as to my standards and what you all deserve in terms of qual...

Azmodai - Purple Smoke pt.2

We are back in Part 2 of Azmodai and painting the second soft surface texture of the Purple Smoke surrounding him. The primary techniques we will cover are how to combine layering, stippling, and glazing to help illustrate the softness smoke gives us as a feeling.

Paints:
Genestealer Purple(GW), Witch Purple(S75), Pastel Purple(AK), Beige(AK), Black & White(Dealers Choice).

Comin right UP!

Hey everyone, a few updates for all of you to take and carry forward into next week. First off being shown above is the painting subject for Part 3 of the Stormcast Challenge with our Blue Reflective NMM armour. Many of you have seen the last iteration painted on a basic Stormcast infantry model, and now I've stacked that process on this more detailed armour. Some new challenges await that we will be building on from the previous 2 parts, so if you haven't gone through those videos yet and ha...

Smoke em if you got em!

I’m back at my painting desk after what has been a hard string of weekends. My marathon race in Toronto, battling a cold, body recovery, and a weekend workshop in Naniamo; to finally be back in my studio chair and continuing Azmodai. The additions of his smoke is the final soft texture to this model and will be a tutorial feature for his Part 2. Giving you all an inside look into the process of layering, stippling, glazing, and combining it with leading strokes to give it movement. This mod...

Stormcast Challenge - Warm Gold NMM pt.2

The Stormcast Challenge continues this week with our warm gold NMM.

Picking up where we left off with the first video of the series, we add some complexity to our light reflections and the actual sculpture itself, featuring one of the eagle head shoulder pauldrons, to raise the difficulty. As a standard for my tutorials and this series, I will run you through some theories and concepts I want you to take away from this tutorial to give you a greater understanding of the creative choice...

Recovery 🏃

Hey everyone, the weekend is finished and I’m back from my Toronto Marathon with a couple very sore legs, battling a cold, and a lot of feelings to unpack. For this short version update: I’ll be releasing the Gold NMM Stormcast Challenge pt2 possibly later this week. And the next part 3 will have to wait a week since I’ll be back on the road to Naniamo to ve teaching a 2 day painting workshop alongside the second annual Emerald Brush painting competition. The video delays are primarily ...

Brush down, shoes on!

Hey fam, it’s approaching race day weekend and I’ve packed my bags and ready to board my flight to race on Sundays Toronto Marathon! So I thought I would get in one last update before I switch my whole mindset to focus on the 42.1km ahead.

Coming in mid next week is the second part of the Stormcast Challenge that focuses on a warm NMM Gold! Building upon the previous skills of reading volumes through careful observations of our photo references, and layering applications. I’ll no...

Azmodai - Grim Dark Robes pt.1

Welcome to the first tutorial featuring Azmodai of the Dark Angels. In this first part tutorial, we will be focusing our brush attention on his Grim Dark Robes and the techniques used with our brush and limited palette to create these textures. Keep in mind for the other parts of his painting we can refer to a couple of other tutorials that are already published on Patreon. Mainly the Black Armour Space Marine tutorial, as well as the new NMM series of the Stormcast Challenge. Repeating thi...

Repent!!!

Running alongside the Stormcast Challenge, Azmodai is also on my desk and the brush is moving really nicely. It’s one of those models that when I initially saw the miniature, I wasn’t feelin it. But given in the hand and being enabled to add my own atmosphere, this is turning into what I felt as a kid seeing this illustration in the Angels of Death Codex back in 2nd edition.

As for what’s to come in the form of tutorials? Well, next week I’ll be continuing my love of soft surfa...

Hey everyone, welcome to Part 1 of this new Stormcast Challenge series. We kick things off with our Dark Warm Steel NMM, with a bit of theory and visual aids in Photoshop, and then to the painting desk for a demo and talk-through. I'm looking forward to seeing how everyone does and am excited to be putting this challenge up for you!

A whole new batch of updated sculptures of Games Workshops Stormcast Eternals is coming over the horizon, and I'd like to start a new painting challenge that invites my Patreons to come and explore these sculptures with me. I will be creating a series of tutorials that will focus on various elements of NMM, as well as faces and other elemen...

Skaventide Greyseer pt.3

Welcome to part 3 of the Greyseer project! In this video, I share the process of creating a matt painting backdrop for the Greyseer to set him in the Underhive. I worked with a few general references and sketched with the paintbrush to turn a low-fidelity rough painting, gradually building in more details, all while checking the positions of our subject to make those light streaks line up.

Paint List:

October Update!

Hey everyone, with the start of the new month I thought it would be wise to give all you Patreons an update on what's to come this month. First, we have the upcoming Part 3 of the Skaventide Greyseer tutorial just around the corner. This tutorial will feature a brand new painting topic for the Patreon, painting a matt background of the underhive. As well as steps I've taken to modify the current painting of the Greyseer himself to harmonize with the background and atmosphere. It's been an enj...

Underhive Update!

Good morning!

I have some updates for you all in the form of Progress images and news on what is coming next. After finishing the Iron Man and his big man Hulk Buster suit, along with the progress of Ahriman commission pieces. The Greyseer has been taking up a lot of headspace with the next steps in the process this week. That means next week's tutorial will be back in the underhive with the matt background painting and some colour tinting on the actual model I've illustrated in P...

The rule of 1/3rds

Hey everyone and welcome to the mid-week of September. Before I get into what the post title is all about, this week's tutorial will be released this Saturday simply due to my Games Workshop Embargo date. Sadly I can't show you what I've been working on just yet, but I can say it's all about a team set in the 41st millennium that kills... if you can put that all together. Oh, and they fly lol. So that should give you a few ideas on the subject, and the tutorial is more suited for the tabletop...

Adding more light.

With the Liche Priest Bone Dragon project complete, it’s time to dive back into the underhive and shed a bit more light on the Greyseer. Giving us a look at the broken bell underfoot, a peek at the lower half of his staff, and the scuttling rats below.

Painting with such a desaturated palette creates a delicate balance to generate contrast through the various elements of the piece, but to remain harmonious in its atmosphere. Add the pressures of the light rays that are in continuous ...

Arise!!!

My Hierophant sitting from his position of power upon his Bone Giant is finally complete! What a miniature, and quite the process of seeing it all together. I'm no stranger to these large monster kits, but I can say from the experiences of the Mauler Squigs, Kragnos, Troggoth King, Primarchs etc, that I still feel relief and almost an unbelievable sense of it being done. No more imaginative sessions of staring at partially completed and sub-assemblies scattered across my working shelf. No mor...
