Record of the Enchanting Mother and Beautiful Wife (The World's Number One Beautiful Mother Sword Immortal) Chapter 68

The sun was tilting westward, and the noise in the restaurant was gradually fading. I picked up my bowl and scooped up the last bit of fish soup. The fresh taste bloomed on my tongue, the hot liquid sliding down my throat, warming my stomach in a comforting way.

Senior Brother patted his round belly and shouted, “Boss, the bill!”

Soon after, the boss came in, his thin, sharp face plastered with a fawning smile, hands rubbing together quickly, bowing and nodding as he said, “Alright, gentlemen, the total is ten gold.”

“What? That expensive?” Second Senior Brother suddenly stood up, eyes wide, his voice even louder than Senior Brother’s.

Ten gold!

That amount could feed an ordinary family for years!

The boss was unfazed, squinting his eyes and smiling even more, pointing at an empty plate on the table. “Gentlemen, these are our signature dishes. That ‘Blue Sea Silver Scale’ is a rare delicacy, not easy to catch.” There was a hint of pride in his tone, his eyes darting quickly, as if calculating how much he could squeeze out of us.

Senior Brother’s eyes bulged with anger, his face flushed red, and he roared, “This is a damned black shop!” His voice shook the window frames.

The boss shrank his neck and quickly waved his hands, forcing a bitter smile. “Gentlemen, you can’t say that. Our prices are clearly marked. You just didn’t look carefully at the time.”

At that moment, whispers and a few sharp laughs came from outside the private room.

I peeked out and saw a few diners craning their necks to look inside, grinning as if enjoying a spectacle.

“Bringing such a pretty little lady here for dinner, and you don’t even have money.”

“Just now they were shouting about eating Xuan Shui Crab Beast. What a bunch of bumpkins.”

Mother sat to the side, her brows slightly furrowed. Senior Brother and Second Senior Brother’s faces darkened, fists clenched so tightly their knuckles cracked, as if they were about to rush out and beat someone.

“Alright, alright,” I cleared my throat, suppressing my anger, and stood up to beckon the boss inside. “Come in, close the door.” He slipped in and closed the door behind him, shutting out the noise and prying eyes.

I took out the Longevity Sect’s jade pendant from my robe and handed it over. “Boss, do you recognize this?”

The boss took the pendant, turning it over a few times, his brows raising. “I recognize it, a Longevity Sect token.” He paused, his tone a bit troubled. “But this isn’t Longevity Sect business. We’re just a small shop. It’s not appropriate for you to use this.”

The smile on my face froze, and I was momentarily speechless.

Seeing me silent, the boss pressed on, “Just your table, that ‘Blue Sea Silver Scale’ cost us five gold to bring in, not counting labor and seasoning.” He patted his chest, swearing by it.

I sneered inwardly how could I believe such nonsense? It was obvious he was gouging us, taking the chance to fleece us for all we were worth.

But since Senior Brother had shouted for the signature dish as soon as we entered, it was like telling them we were fat sheep, ready for slaughter.

I was fuming but had no grounds to argue.

I glanced at Second Senior Brother, who understood and took out a few Longevity Pills from his pocket, handing them over. “Boss, how about this? Recognize it?” The pills were round, giving off a faint medicinal aroma. I watched the boss, waiting for his reaction.

The boss took them, sniffed, and frowned. “This is…?”

I sighed. He probably didn’t recognize Longevity Pills and lazily said, “Forget it. If you don’t know, is there a black market here? I’d like to sell them for some money.”

The boss’s eyes lit up, and he sniffed the pills again, probing, “Little brother, are these Longevity Pills? The kind from the Longevity Sect?”

His face shifted from confusion to a barely contained smile, rubbing his hands like he’d found treasure.

This swindler had some discernment.

I remembered when Senior Brother and I delivered Longevity Techniques and Pills up north, and since he could recognize them, he probably had some inside information.

“Yes, these are worth quite a bit now,” I nodded.

The boss grinned even wider. “You want to pay with these?”

“Can I? I was going to sell them at the black market.” I glanced at the pills in his hand, feigning indifference.

“No need, no need!” The boss waved his hands. “Give me these, and the bill’s settled.” His eyes gleamed with greed, clutching the pills tightly.

I looked at Second Senior Brother. He had four pills, and the boss had one.

I held up two fingers. “Two pills.”

The boss shook his head firmly. “No.”

“Three.” I stared him down.

“Four.” He held up four fingers.

I turned to Second Senior Brother. “Go ask where the black market is. We’ll just sell them.”

The boss’s face changed, and he quickly reached out, afraid I’d really leave. “Three, three!”

Second Senior Brother tossed over two pills, and the boss hurriedly stuffed them into his pocket.

I didn’t mind using a few Longevity Pills to pay, stroking my ring there were still baskets of them inside.

After eating our fill, we found an inn to rest.

Night fell, and an oil lamp flickered in the room, casting wavering shadows on the wall.

Mother, Lingxi, and I chatted idly. Suddenly, heavy footsteps and the clinking of armor echoed from afar.

I got up and walked to the window, lifting a corner to look outside.

The street was bathed in hazy moonlight. A group of heavily armored barbarian soldiers was heading straight for the inn.

They gathered below, the leader a tall figure whispering with a scrawny man:

“Three men, two women… upstairs.”

They were coming for us?

Mother stood, her eyes flashing with alertness and tension. “Who is it?” she whispered.

I lowered my voice. “Seems they’re after us.”

Heavy footsteps thundered up the stairs, shaking the floor.

The door was suddenly flung open. A barbarian soldier with a knife at his waist and a face full of scars stood there, flanked by two equally fierce-looking soldiers blocking the entrance.

The leader’s gaze swept over us, grinning to reveal big white teeth. “Heard you paid with Longevity Pills at the restaurant?”

Not wanting trouble, I stood up and tried to keep my tone calm. “We’re from the Longevity Sect.” I raised the jade pendant.

The soldier sneered, snorting with disdain. “So what? This is Donglin Town, far from the emperor’s reach. The Longevity Sect has no say here.”

He stepped forward, but Senior Brother and Second Senior Brother burst in from the next room. Senior Brother roared, “What the hell do you want!”

Before the words were out, two white shadows flashed by, and the three soldiers were sent flying with a crash.

“You dare hit me?” the leader’s voice trembled with disbelief and fury.

“So what if I do?”

“I’m the deputy to the barbarian general!”

“General or not, even the commander’s been beaten by me.”

Thuds and crashes rang out as fists and feet flew, the fight spilling into the street.

Other barbarian soldiers joined in, but Senior Brother and Second Senior Brother, like tigers descending the mountain, held their own easily, their speed unmatched.

Under their fierce assault, the enemy fell back, screams echoing.

But as time passed, more and more soldiers arrived from all directions, the clatter of armor and shouts filling the air, and the battle grew fiercer.

Though the brothers fought valiantly, the endless stream of enemies left them breathing heavily.

Dozens of barbarian soldiers now lay sprawled across the street. The brothers stood side by side at the inn door, pulling out Longevity Pills and chewing them.

Just then, a voice called from afar, “Stop!”

I looked and saw a man in distinctive armor approaching slowly.

This must be the general the deputy mentioned.
