On the journey that followed, whenever we encountered those ragtag pursuers again, the two senior brothers refused to let Mother take action anymore.
I lazily lay on Lingxi’s lap, opening my mouth to bite the grape she handed me. Looking at Mother, I grinned with the grape in my mouth and mumbled, “These two simp senior brothers are really something.” Lingxi giggled, covering her mouth after hearing me.
Mother, seeing me teasing her, raised her brows and walked over, snorting as she stared at me. Then I saw a pink sole getting closer and closer:
“You little brat~~ Not eating your grapes properly~~ Teasing me here~~” With every word, she pressed her foot down harder.
“Mmm~~ mmm~ mmm~~”
With Mother stepping on my head, it bobbed around wildly. Lingxi laughed even harder beside us.
“Mother-in-law~ let me help you…” she said, pressing her slender fingers on my temples to hold my head in place.
“Mmm~~ mmm~~ mmm~~ mmm~~ mmm~~ mmm!” After a few more stomps, Mother moved her foot away: “Still teasing me?”
“No more… no more… I’ll eat grapes. Wifey, I want grapes, ah~”
I grinned, mouth open, and Lingxi fed me another grape:
“Sss~~ why is this grape so sour…”
“You~~”
“Mmm~~ mmm~~ mmm~~ mmm~~ mmm~~ mmm~~ mmm~~ mmm~~ mmm~~ mmm~~ mmm~~ mmm~~”
…
A day later, we arrived at Donglin Town, the closest place to the East Sea. Beyond here were scattered fishing villages.
Entering the town, the streets were crowded with vendors, their stalls covered in colorful shells and conches. I picked one up, feeling its rough texture with my fingertips and sniffed it sure enough, it smelled of seawater.
Mother pulled Lingxi along, excitedly browsing the stalls.
“These patterns are so pretty.”
“That one looks nice too.”
“Mother-in-law, this one is beautiful. I want it.”
I followed behind. Mother glanced back at me, saw my empty hands, and asked, “Son, why aren’t you picking anything?”
I shrugged lazily. “Nothing catches my eye.”
“You can never count on men to shop…” she huffed and turned back, dragging Lingxi forward.
With my hands in my sleeves, I strolled along behind them.
At noon, we found the best restaurant in town. The aroma of fish soup wafted through the air, making everyone hungry.
As soon as Senior Brother entered, he shouted, “Boss, bring out your signature dishes! I heard your fish is the best!”
The boss was a skinny middle-aged man with a pointed face and a goatee.
He looked up at the two senior brothers, his eyes flickering, then smiled obsequiously: “You two look unfamiliar are you new barbarian soldiers?”
Senior Brother laughed heartily and waved his hand, “No, no, we’re just passing through, here to try your fish and see how it tastes.” The boss breathed a sigh of relief, grinning to show two yellow teeth, and nodded, “Alright, the fish will be right up!” With that, he scurried off to the kitchen.
Soon, the private room table was filled with various dishes, and the steaming fish soup smelled even more delicious.
I scooped a spoonful into my mouth.
Mmm, not bad.
Mother stared at the dishes, muttering, “Why isn’t there any crab?”
Senior Brother frowned, stood up, and strode to the doorway, shouting, “Boss, why aren’t there any crabs?”
The boss hurried over, looking puzzled, and asked, “Crabs? What crabs?”
Senior Brother, seeing his confusion, turned to Mother and scratched his head, “Mistress, what exactly is a crab?”
Mother sighed helplessly, gesturing in the air, “It’s that kind of seafood with a hard shell, walks sideways, and has two big pincers.”
The boss’s face changed, disbelief in his eyes, “Oh, madam, you must be joking. That… that’s the ‘Blackwater Pincer Beast’?”
Before Mother could answer, the boss frowned, feeling the pressure from the two senior brothers staring at him, and continued to explain:
“That Blackwater Pincer Beast is the overlord of the sea huge and ferocious. Fishermen avoid it at all costs; who would dare catch one to eat?”
He paused, then added, “I’ve heard old fishermen say, one snap of its pincers can split a fishing boat in two. Its shell is so hard, even knives can’t cut it. Who would eat that?”
Mother and I exchanged glances.
Crab? Steamed, dipped in sauce such delicious seafood, yet here it’s a fearsome demon beast?
Looking at the boss’s earnest expression, it didn’t seem like a lie.
Curious, I asked, “Boss, if the… Blackwater Pincer Beast is so fierce, has any cultivator ever caught one?”
The boss snorted, a look of disdain on his face, and waved his hand, “Cultivators these days how many are really capable? Most are just freeloaders. The truly skilled ones are up north fighting demon beasts; who has time to bother with sea creatures?”
He glanced at me and sneered, “Young man, don’t be fooled by those cultivators bragging. If they really met a Blackwater Pincer Beast, they’d be lucky to escape. A couple years ago, some so-called expert from a sect tried to catch one never even found his body!”
Hearing this, I was a bit surprised.
Since coming to this world a few months ago, I’d mostly stayed within the sect. Though I’d entered a secret realm once, I hadn’t gone deep. The beasts I saw then were mostly small ones driven mad by Mother’s Enchanting Beast Technique, and they just seemed like wild animals.
We’d passed through many towns, and the people lived peacefully I’d never heard of the demon beast tribes.
Suddenly, this meal became even more interesting! Not only did it fill my belly, it gave me a deeper understanding of this world.
Outside the private room, other diners seemed to have overheard our conversation and looked over curiously, some whispering:
“Blackwater Pincer Beast? Isn’t that the monster Old Li’s boat ran into when it capsized?”
“Yeah, I heard its pincers are bigger than a fishing boat!”
I listened carefully. It seemed this crab really was something extraordinary.
