The Sword of the Winter Rose - Chapter IV

Not long until we begin the journey to Harrenhal...

Comments

I’m shocked that Aerys listened to reason and that Rhaegar demonstrated that he had a brain.

Man, when you mentioned wanted to do this I was skeptical. But damnmmmnnnnnn you have me super into game of thrones again. Great work!

Not to mention the fact, he very much had been burnin' folks semi-regularly at this time. Just not nobles. It's the only way he could get it up at that point in his life if the rumors are to be believed that we read from canon.

Victory For The People

I think, based on his internal thoughts after the denial he's going to at least keep it close to the North, if not the Starks themselves since he understands the importance of Valyrian Steel to the Long Night. Or.. he could gift it to Rhaegar and get kudos/supplies or some shit for the North as a whole which would also assist with the efforts towards the same objective.

Victory For The People

Thanks Lee for the update! I don't know yet the path you will take for the story, but for the moment, it's perfect!

I'm trying to figure out what you base this on. Aerys and Rhaegar arr two characters I have most freedom with as they barely feature in any context beyond the memories of others. Aerys was going mad for years before the tourney of Harrenhal and was paranoid as hell after Barristan rescued him. He sees what Rickard did as an attempt to undermine his power, so he wouldn't take his side. As things are, there is a very small amount of ability to reason with him and if there was anyone he'd list to, it would be Rhaegar who is cunning enough to know how to manipulate Aerys

Please don't let John be toilet paper

Jim Bob

I disagree also with Jonathan, let the author have is fun ;)

Why would we want to read a story that's exactly like whats already been written?

Matthew

I enjoyed this chapter, but honestly, I think your characterization of the relationship between Aerys and Rhaegar is just wrong. Aerys is insane, yes, but at this point in time, more than a year before the rebellion, he’s not at the burn happy kill ‘em all stage. There is also no way Rhaegar would just be able to reason with him and then make a suggestion about what should happen in the north and have it petulantly accepted. IMO Aerys would honestly laugh at the Ironborn instead of getting offended at Stark for defending his land. I think that’s pretty lazy writing and a backslide in quality from your last few stories. I think you can do better than this.

Thank you for the update I was looking around and seeing you did it thank you

I'm hoping that Jon offering Red Rain to Rodrik was in honor of them fighting side by side, and not an indication that Jon would just hand off a valyrian steel sword like it was nothing. Meaning I hope that he's not going to try to just hand it off to someone for any minor reason. He might have a good reason later to reward someone with it. I'm curious how a trip south is going to work. If there are those who feel a bastard shouldn't have a valyrian steel sword, let alone two, would a southern lord try to take it from him? Would the king? Great chapter, as always.

I rate how much you've put into the sword fighting and technique. I have no idea if it's true, but it seems about right, haha. I really hope Lyanna sees Jon as a brother and nothing else. Lastly, I liked the intro of Rheager. It'll be cool to see him fleshed out more as a character. Anyway, thank you for the chapter Mr McCusker and I look forward to the next one.

Sunny

Fantastic chapter Lee! Absolutely loving it.

V_Arko

Aerys being a right twiddly twat as usual I see. Great chapter, already ready for the next one.

Sammy the Shark

Great chapter. I'm assuming the Ironborn would have escaped if Jon hadn't come back in time so this is probably the first point of major divergence right?
