The Gladiators – Part XIII (Public)

Beneath the blazing sun of Rome and on the heated sand of its arena, two sweating figures struggle for the mastery under the watchful eyes of the crowd. One holds the other tightly pinioned in a hold which has left him all but helpless, but his strength is such that he cannot be forced to submit – now will his Teuton’s pride allow it. The Gaul, his cunning and supple adversary, holds him fast – but lacks that critical edge of sheer strength to bring the battle to an end.  And thus they stand, swaying, striving their utmost, with the sweat of their struggle running rivulets down the locked and shining bodies and soaking the linen loincloths which are their only garb.

The Consul, a connoisseur of such sights, leans languidly back in his chair and favours his attractive accompaniment with a patronising smile.

“There, my dear. What did I tell you? His strength alone cannot win him free of that hold; it is invariably a winning grip, especially in the arms of so capable a contender as my own chosen champion. It is but a matter of a little while before your wager is lost.”

The girl, her eyes fixed upon the straining slabs of shining muscle before her, does not answer – unless to offer up a silent prayer to the gods for her own choice of champion.

But the Gaul, determined to end the matter and win the purse at stake, now applies a further torment to his helpless victim: he brings his knee up hard and forces it into the small of the Teuton’s back while at the same time dragging back his shoulders. His rival stretched and racked with pain, cries out and struggles to keep his footing on the sliding sand while the Gaul grins, sensing victory at last and adds yet more pressure. Bent intolerably back and wholly unable to escape that iron hold, the Teuton is forced inexorably, still struggling, to his knees, the rush of effort drowning out even the appreciative roar of the Roman crowd. His position is now hopeless – and yet, even held in such a torturing embrace, he cannot bring himself to submit……
