Melisa Mendini, Wiesbaden, 2011

These pictures are real rejects. I never wanted to show them. Normally I handle it this way: If a photo set didn't turn out as well as I had imagined, then it stays locked away. That doesn't happen often. But I actually only want to show pictures that I like myself and that I'm convinced of.

But Melisa Mendini has many fans. And sometimes I get mail. People ask me, beg me, don't you have more photos? And so this time - really just as an exception - I let myself be persuaded and am showing pictures that I don't like myself.

The makeup, the smokey eyes, are simply too harsh for the set. I noticed that while photographing. And everything around it somehow doesn't fit. But there's one thing I like: The silky ocean photo on the wall. Because I took that one too (and gave it to the owner, in whose apartment I was photographing, as payment).

I understand what you mean. I think many photographers feel the same way. We take pictures, aren’t fully convinced by them ourselves, yet others still like them. When comparing your recent photo series from today, they have a completely different effect on me as a viewer. The series with the Playmate reflects more photography and storytelling. And the series with Melissa, to me, comes across as much more provocative and erotic – even though it actually shows significantly less skin than the series with the Playmate. To me, it shows that the model’s expression and makeup alone can have a strong impact on the entire photo series. Melissa’s dark eyes come across as much more intense and erotic even a bit more threatening than the Playmate’s.
