Chapter 356 – Day 774 (Part 2) – The Collapse Of An Empire

I had noticed tribes people in the swamps fighting the monsters there. They didn’t look that good and were in smaller groups or alone, but this was probably the dumping ground for tribal rejects. There is always someone in a worse position and I was glad I wasn’t one of those people.

Exiting the swamp into some shadowlands, I continued to make my way to the Northeast. Fuyuka had really helped out with the exact terrain. The rebels knew it all. Bao Wang, or the Butcher, had been less informed surprisingly. Or not surprisingly since the evil empire was run like a decapitated chicken.

Honestly, I couldn’t imagine a worse possible government. Even anarchy would be better. At least there if you were the Divine Empress you could just go around killing people for the crystals they had collected. Or set up a fighting cage in your plaza.

That was when it hit me. The Divine Empress had roads built and Hitler had built the autobahn in Nazi Germany. Both made travel a lot easier. I had never thought of that before. Evil empires got to have those roads.

I couldn’t chuckle or shake my head at my own realization but I just grinned a bit. It was nice to make connections like that sometimes. Ahead of me I saw the level 1 flowerlands. I was making good time and the tribes people were staying away.

At least the cities were easy to find in the Systemic Lands. The zone layout made things very easy to figure out where cities were located. Just had down level. Huh, I should make that a term like deek. Down level, it had a nice ring to it.

I saw some forest up ahead and kept going. There were no monsters now in the afternoon. The tribes had swept up everything which was nice and made travel easy. Not as nice as the road though which was flat.

A short time later I saw the city wall ahead. I went over as gently as possible and landed on the other side. No soldiers on the wall top. That was surprising. But it would be a nightmare to climb without equipment.

I made my way across the roof tops and saw the fighting in the plaza before I heard it. There were people fighting in melee and some skills. It appeared to be the Black Talons holding off the regular soldiers. Well, this was surprising. Luckily the fight was happening in the North part of the plaza, and I had come in from the Southwest.

Landing near the pillars many people gave me looks. Fu Ge quickly cashed in the level 3 crystals I had collected for him from our campsite so he could get a restoration. He looked a lot better after he got one and instructed Qi Ji Long to get one as well.

I kept an eye out but no one bothered us as I refilled up our supplies. I also purchased another backpack to wear on my front. I could put Qi Ji Long like a child carrier. Fu Ge was just going to have to hang onto my back and wear the supply pack.

“Hurry up,” I told both of them and they quickly got moving. I swear, you see one battle, you have seen them all. This was nothing new to me and I didn’t want to wait around and be pulled into the drama.

Well they could keep fighting, it was no longer my problem. Time to get out of here and back home. Once my two passengers were set, I took off towards the Northwest. I passed near the fight, but they were too busy to bother me just as I hoped.

We made our way out of the city and went back to traveling. I couldn’t wait to get an airship of my own. I would fly everywhere. No more running. I didn’t care if it burnt up a million points per zone, I was mentally tired of dragging other people around and having to run everywhere.

Our course Northwest, to get the East road out of the Forbidden City. The South road lead to Nanjing. I did not want to go near the Forbidden City. They had cannons on their wall that shot energy beams. They had terrible aim, but against a large group or airships, I could see them maybe working.

The fact the airships had penetrated to the plaza showed that offense was the best defense. One couldn’t just turtle up. Well with the City Shield it would be possible. Three dimensional combat made the walls a barrier for low level people or larger monsters, but not something that would stop a single person.

Even monsters could break through, like the golems that had chased me from the tower. Well I would be going to another one with the Astrologer. It would be interesting to see if they both of them had golems.

It was getting dark by the time I reached the East road which was perfect. I set off as quickly as I could go without hurting either of my passengers. It was a pain to focus on my exact footing out in the wilderness. I had never realized what a mental burden it was until I ran along the roads.

Purgatory would have all the roads. Make travel a breeze, for the poor people. I would be riding in my airship. One day, airship, one day.

There was no traffic on the road either which was nice. The tribes would stay away, and the evil empire was in turmoil right now. Honestly, I was surprised things had devolved to a civil war so quickly. But it also made sense.

The evil empire had to be hemorrhaging troops in the war with my faction and me killing off a bunch. The rebels had taken a city drawing more soldiers away. Then the capital had been robbed, blown up, and the attackers had escaped.

The Envoy was probably up to his ears trying to stabilize the situation. So either the population was fed up or the Lords were making a play for more power. Either case, I had no objections. It would weaken and hopefully break the Divine Empress’s tribute train she had running.

I had always thought the Dragon Empire would collapse if I robbed the treasury and the Divine Empress wasn’t around, but in a single day. I was honestly impressed with myself. I knew I couldn’t take all the credit, but I was no longer a slayer of people, but a slayer of nations.

Everyone had all these titles, and while Champion was good, I needed to add a couple more under my belt for my own Empire. Dragon Slayer Michael sounded about right, since I killed off the Dragon Empire. The Black Dragon herself was still around, I had been told that was what Hei Long meant in Chinese, but hopefully I could up my dragon slaying count to two.

The road transitioned to a level 1 zone and I estimated we would reach New Beijing around midnight. I had taken two breaks already with my passengers, but the kid was dozing right now as best as he could. Fu Ge was barely hanging on. I hesitated but called it a night. I couldn’t have him falling off and I got a lot further than I hoped for today. I picked a spot near the road, but in the forest. No monsters or people nearby and let them pass out from exhaustion.

I took the time to stretched while my two traveling companions crashed. I wasn’t going to sleep. I had my rest, and more than enough.

I also didn’t feel sleepy either. The stats kicking in. It was annoying that I had to stop, but it was for the best. Michael express was not torture express. I needed them functional just in case something happened. Well if something happened, Fu Ge was getting tossed and I would run on with the kid.

That was the power of stats to keep going and going. It made me wonder if there was a true limit to what stats could do. Where was the power cap? I knew the Divine Empress was strong, but could she beat a level 6, a level 7?

And what was beyond that. The point drops from different level monsters made it appear that level 10 was the maximum. But I was hesitant to agree with that. I had been wrong about a lot of other stuff. The stats needed to fight at that level would have to be insane.

I would need to set up my own tribute system or taxes as proper governments would call it. No Immortal Council. Just me at the top, getting fifty percent of the budget. I would label it defense spending.

My thoughts drifted to Earth. If my family could see me now. Destroyer of nations. That was another good title. I would be stacking them up. I wasn’t sure about the title of Emperor. It sounded very self centered and had connotations.

Champion Michael, Slayer of Dragons, Destroyer of Nations, it had a good ring to it. Keep the Champion title so people didn’t expect me to actually do any paperwork or management besides taking in the crystals for myself.

I could already imagine Clarissa just sighing and giving me a look. Then she would respond with her deadpan voice asking me how we should implement such a thing and what portion of the budget to allocate.

What I really needed was a teammate to train with and bounce ideas off of. I liked that with Naran. He was always level headed in his own way. He had his issues, but he was trying to make the best of a bad situation.

Well don’t worry friend, I left a present for the Divine Empress, and I hope she found it when she returned. The look on her face would be priceless and also a death sentence. The Avatar could probably see it. I might, and this was a big might, forgive her if she was able to show me it somehow.

I thought about the tower and anything I would need to do to prepare. I would like to get some more upgrades for Acid Shot and maybe take it to the next level. I had time. I had a lot of time. It was probably better to do it, since once I entered the tower I wouldn’t be able to leave according to the Astrologer.

That also meant I would haul in a cart of supplies. I could leave it at the entrance maybe and take a full pack or two. But I would bring a cart stuffed to the brim just in case I needed to fall back and resupply. Maybe I could hall the cart up, but no. The giant steps up to the tower indicated it wasn’t cart friendly.

If there had been a ramp leading up to the entrance then I would have been more inclined to believe it was cart accessible. Oh, a group was moving along the road. I counted 10 people, and they had decent stats.

Around the 6,000 mark if I had to guess. Perhaps Black Talons coming back from a mission. The kid was chained to me, but I didn’t want to wake him. I pulled apart the metal handcuff and put it into the side of the tree, wedging it in there.

It was a bad solution, but it would take at least a moment to get free. I also kept one eye on the kid as I moved to the road to confront the group. If they were from the evil empire, I would get information and then kill them.

“Ahead!” I heard one of them all out in English. So not the evil empire then.

“Identify yourselves,” I called back as I stepped out onto the road, while still keeping one eye on Qi Ji Long.

Comments

Gio you mad lad, your ever present obsession with Meta points and how you keep thinking about them is extremely amusing and amazing. GGs buddy

Excal04

Yeah what you say sounds very plausible also. I would be very interested what kind of meta-point the system would give for your wish Zarik0. After discussing this I am VERY glad I don't have to choose myself and can just read on. If Michael ever gets one lol.

Parametrix-Bootstrap

Restorations fix physical damage, the main issue at higher levels of combat is cursed damage, which a restoration won't fix. Just paper over with the missing flesh.

Mister Vii

Getting a restoration anywhere seems like a decent utility meta point. It doesn’t do much but keep you alive which is the foundation for everything. You’d have to be killed in one hit to die which probably directly boosts combat potential by an entire tier. Might be bad long term though if curse energy becomes mainstream.

Alessan

Andreas, i totally agree that meta points for more stats is insane (and can be really top tier depending of the situation you are about to face in near future), but it's "short" term in my view, good "simple" boost but limited in possibility/unlock of path of progression/growth I mean i disagree on the aspect that its "with the highest growth potential" (or we don't give same meaning of growth here, or talk on the same aspect of growth, stats is stats, it don't change/help/unlock fundamentally your awareness and control of your own being when number go up with them) a hammer is still a hammer even if it grow in size, your limited with what you can do with that and its clumsy in plenty of way/use of it no matter the increase in size (you don't use all what you can use with them and have no full "real" control/understandind/awareness), and if you know only how to hammer, well people can play around it or excel on these other aspect and even hit you or get huge gain (and leverage/use of potential) in unexpected place with them (like you dumb as a brick or so bad at control of your force for really exagerated exemple :) I also "disagree" with "Control can be trained." or i agree but its not the aspect/part of what i talk about here, you can't train control when you don't even have conscious awareness and some conscious control on a lot % part of your mind/body and how they work and even why, i try to point the more fundamental/deeper block/part of our being and of our mind and body here who is not in our conscious awareness and so possible "real" control of it

Zarik0

It is not 100% sure stats gained trough points from crystals is the way to power. It might be the way to power in the Systemic Lands, but will these stats work outside the systemic lands? The stats you gain from the shop, are they truly yours or are they training wheels to get you started on the road to power... What is the primary difference between stats gained with and without the system? Without knowing this, all stats gained from the system are a little suspect.

Gio

I think getting a lot of control is very useful and maybe even top-tier, but in comparison to a meta-point boosting stats it pales. I keep thinking back to the meta point that divides the cost of all stat purchases by 5, just straight up. It is the most insane in my opinion, with the highest growth potential. Imagine the divine empress takes this for her first meta point, she wouldn't have gone from like 30 000 stats to 160 000 (I think that was the number) but to 680 000... Absolutely ludicrous. The Astrologer can use Shatter all he wants, against 100 000 Spirit and Mind, he can do nothing to her anymore. The big thing about a cost divide by 5 is it allows you to be able to fight higher monsters. Against higher leveled monsters you cannot win with finesse alone, you need a powerful base first. All the knowledge can be gained by others and taken for yourselves. Control can be trained. Just take the cost divide by 5 and run an empire like the Divine Empress, just efficiently with a Clarissa to manage things. Stars are the way to power. Get Spirit to ludicrous levels, engulf the world in level 5 acid. Nothing stands in your way. But that is just what I would do, no idea what's really better. Maybe the end game of the Systemic Lands doesn't even require stats anymore, I don't know.

Parametrix-Bootstrap

Well the Zenkai boost would be allowed. But near death would be taken literally. The main issue with that is, getting near death but surviving. That doesn't happen in realistic fights to the death. Once someone is injured the damage accumulation builds up, there is very rarely a chance to turn the tables. Like in a boxxing/MMA, when a fighter is gassed they might get a second wind, but turning the tables is not simple/easy. It can happen, but is always a surprise. Close to death would only have triggered three times for Michael so far. Once when he was struck by Death/lost an arm. Second when his feet were melted off. And the third when the DE blew a hole in his chest after ripping out an eye and breaking a leg. None of those circumstances are things a person would ever want to repeat. Sure, working through pain, mental toughness is a thing, but if Naran wasn't around for the first two and the Astrologer the last (by way of Naran) he would have died. The combat knowledge would also be allowed. It would be innate knowledge, but without the knowledge of the meta-point that you wished for innate knowledge. So, it would trigger at key moments in a fight when someone is under high stress. Great ideas!

Mister Vii

I think a also a good meta point idea would be "Innate knowledge: systemic lands first principles". It should technically give you everything you need to figure out everything else... but you might need to do it with a team of researchers, the more teams the better. I think this would be best if you were playing a very long game and it's relatively peaceful.

Gio

There are lots of good choices. That is the hard part with meta-points. The Divine Empress went in this direction with knowledge. Skills are very complex. I like to use the metaphor of a powerplant. The Almighty System is setting it up and then humans are just flicking light switches. There is a huge leap from light switch to powerplant. I suggest the Discord. There are always people there and you get answers much more quickly. I also keep an eye on it during the day.

Mister Vii

Yup, and that an aspect also linked/unlocked at some point with what i speak in my view with full awareness and control and "modification"/training of mind(-->link to body), with energy psycho active and reactive, having full awareness of your mind and control over it will unlock the fundamental control/awareness you need to learn and master energy and what your mind do with it (psycho active and reactive) aka skill at some point with enough complexity after you go down enough layer with this fundamental block you just unlocked with awareness and control (and so knowing at some point) of your full mind and body and how you can train/modify it with time/work/research Imagine what it can mean if you have finally the full awareness (and so learn/knowledge of it and how/why they work at some point with time if not instat and so get control) of all these part who are done auto in our body and mind (unconscious/instinct/sense/etc) you can refine all that (and for everything, movement, to reaction, to state of mind, etc) and really start use your max potential and ability of your body and mind can do, our conscious/awareness/controled mind is so much a little part and is so little aware and in control of all what our mind and body is and what constantly happen with them, low tier lifeform race human with only being 3 millions old when specy lifespam are around 250 millions, it make us baby and just beginning in our evolution to develope mind consciousness (full consciousness concept) we just begin to open this door Man i keep preaching a lot on this thing in multiple comment, but nobody seem to give their view and discuss about it and give me their own point/opinion about it as a return (im fairly interested in this), i'm a bit sad :(

Zarik0

I think a really good meta point would be the understanding of how skills work and how to learn and improve them without system help. We already saw part of this through the Astrologer shatter, and that allowed him to really widen his arsenal.

Rino Gini

Honestly. Just pick x3 Stats. Get a second Meta-Point and that is now x9. Get a third by some twist of uber-luck and your at x27.

ScaryPie

I think that if you write you skill idea in a notebook and make a simple request it when you get a meta point, the system will at least glance at it and might take it into account and then make some modifications to it to make it more "balanced", can't hurt to try :P

Gio

Interesting ones and idea :P "A well spent meta point should open a new path of progression. You can get more potential out of a meta point that starts weak and grows than one that's immediately useful." Yup i agree, new path of progression or fundamental add opening things, not just like you get a bigger stick meta in hand and that's that (like x stats, helpfull for a time but bleh in long term and doesn't change much or unlock things) That's why for me really the best one possible is something who help/give/reinforce the control/awarenes/mastery/can modifie of your mind->body, this is too fundamental and touch everything and the training and open path of progression and possibility/learning with that are too much, imagine have full awareness (and control if possible) of your mind and body and you can also rewire a bit your nerf/brain (so control/awareness/modification mind-->body--> super heroe and ability) given time of you to do it and when working on it etc This is really here when you can go "higher being" and get the max thing possible with time and etc (learn thing/upgrade thing/etc) just the full mind/brain awareness and so upgrade needed to process it is enormous but if you can get control over it and so can modifie it (better actively and directly but by training with time is ok too) With the body structure are one of the fundamental block weaved with energy, mind (which is nerf/brain wiring) is the other fundamental block weaved together here and with energy is psycho active and reactive, well having total awareness and control (so some degree of modification possible) of your mind (and so body) is the best in my mind :) Full body control (action/movement), reaction build/customized/modified, mind speed and processing upgraded, memory, knowledge, skill, energy control/mastery, the list can go on and the applications and "upgrade" possible... The best is it's open your "eyes" awareness to a new world, "higher layer", of reality and so open path and fundamental possibility (that can be researched and learned and can go a long way forward with time, the initial boost is also enormous in a lot of application, but the new path of progression...)

Zarik0

I think your initial analysis was spot on. The main problem with part two is that you don't get to design what you get for your skill if you get a meta point, you make a wish then the system gives you options. Looking for something simple and straight forward is more likely to get you offered something close to what you ask for. Still I think the basic points of picking something that allows scaling and growth are very solid considerations/requests to include. Remember you get diminishing returns from high stats so you have a force working against you going exponential/unlimited, moreover the system is aware, presenting the options, and will not allow itself to be gamed. I think infinite growth, and increased power/utility over time are very achievable, getting something with an exponential feedback loop somewhat less so (though perhaps not impossible with enough meta points).

David Burchfield

Normandy or Purgatory force? seem more Purgatory logical but who know :) Ohhh looking at the map again they were contesting the area just sticking of the city of New Beijing, so i guess they taken the city or are doing it now and its a squad send forward, scout reinforcement or kill thing/disturb when the figth is still going or after they just finished it off

Zarik0

A few thoughts about meta points. I've been thinking about what would be the best possible meta point and I have a few ideas. In general, a well spent meta point should have the following qualities: - Scaling (if you get stronger, ability granted becomes more stronger) - Growth (the meta point itself grows stronger) - Exponential (Meta point should be able to go infinite) A well spent meta point should open a new path of progression. You can get more potential out of a meta point that starts weak and grows than one that's immediately useful. A few examples with their qualities listed below them: Inquisitor's blink spell Pros: - Scaling (it gets better as you get better, you can upgrade it the same as an other skill) - Surprise factor (Hard to anticipate if your target does not know about it, you usually only need to use it once to win, even DE probably got hit the first time she fought the inquisitor) - Easy to use Cons: - Gets less useful the longer a battle lasts - Costs tons of energy Overall: Useful but needs to be combined with an overwhelming attack, (like death bite lvl 4), the inquisitor's attacks were too weak. Astrologers "so I predict" Pros: - Growth (gains from the meta point keep growing) Cons: - Parasitic (Because it depends on the death of humans and stealing their stats, your potential is limited by humans, You can't go exponential/infinite with it) Overall: It's better than blink, possiby a top tier ability among humans/intelligent beings, but not top tier when facing monsters. DE's Innate knowledge: internal energy manipulation. Pros: - Info (Allows you to know what to do, very useful) - Helpful in figuring out how to increase stats without help from the system. Cons: - Same innate knowledge could probably be achieved without spending a meta point (though it might take years/decades/centuries) So I've got an idea for two meta point skills that have good qualities. One for increasing stats and one for increasing knowledge. I'll list show the skills with the limitations and then explain they are good. Unique passive: Zenkai boost Skill: Every time you survive a near death injury and recover, all stats gain a 1.1 multiplier. (Basically your stats are multiplied by 1.1^x, where x is the number of times you survived a near death injury.) Limitations: - When the skill is activated, you can not use a pillar to heal for 100*(1.1^x) hours. If you do, you do not gain a zenkai boost. - You are not allowed to intentionally get injured for the purposes of gaining a Zenkai boost, if you do, you will not gain a zenkai boost. - The injuries must be from a situation where your life is on the line. - You must overcome what caused the near death injury in 100*(1.1^x) days or you lose the gained boost, where x is the number of locked in boosts you have. (basically the situation what caused the injury should no longer cause the injury) If you do this, the zenkai boost becomes locked in. If this limitation is removed, the boost becomes locked in after healing to full health. - Use limitation: you can not gain a zenkai boost while you have a zenkai boost that is not locked in yet. Pros: - Scaling (gets more effective the higher your stats) - Growth (the skill itself gets better over time) - Exponential (keeps getting better as it gets better in a better way) - Infinite potential (if you somehow manage to gain enough meta points to remove the limitations, you can pretty much go infinite, limited by healing) Cons: - Takes 12 activations to be worth what you can instantly get from a single meta point (3x to all stats) - Extremely dangerous ( You basically trigger the skill by going into dangerous situations, try your best to survive and barely surviving) - No immediate advantage ( Takes a long time to get the skill going ) - You might be ambushed by enemies when you are at your weakest ( especially with the Avatar arranging things) Overall: We know exponential mechanics exist in the systemic lands, in the sense that you can 10x a stat with a meta point and 10x it again and again. Though, the system might be disinclined to do it after a certain point. If you want to advance in the systemic lands, you will need to risk your life anyway so the limitations are not that bad. Tough the probability of survival with this skill is low, you will need to risk it all to gain all, so you might as well gain some benefits. Unique passive: Growing innate combat insights You gain useful insights/epiphanies/understanding of your situation and how to survive and/or triumph if you are in danger. Gained knowledge is added to your innate knowledge, gained knowledge does not need to be gained again. Limitations: - Hidden curse: This meta point and the memory of gaining this meta point is hidden from you, if needed, a convincing fake memories of nothing special happening replaces this missing memory. (If you somehow regain access to the hidden memories, this limitation is removed) - You gain the benefits of this meta point slowly over the course of 100 days. After 100 days, you gain full benefits and this limitation is removed. - Hidden curse: If you do not somehow regain access to the locked memory of this meta point within 10000 days of gaining it, you regain your memories, knowledge of this meta point and its limitations and then meta point is lost. If you regain your memories within 10000 days, this limitation is removed. - Use limitation: Each activation of the passive skill costs 1 day of wakefullness, if a use would cause you to get sleepy or fall asleep the skill does not activate. Pros: - Growth: Innate knowledge keeps being expanded. - Exponential: The more dangerous the world around you, the more useful it is. Useful for whatever the system throws at you, and against other humans. Cons: - Antiscaling, the higher your stats and abilities, the less dangerous the world gets, the less useful this ability gets. You need to be a creative person to get the most out of this skill. For example: deciding to go out of the city and fight blindfolded. Or, cut off your arms and legs and travel trough a dangerous zone. - You might gain an insight too late. Knowing how to defeat an enemy is not very useful after a hole has been blasted trough your chest. Or the insight "you should run away because x, y an z" might come too late. - There is a hidden timer. You must be both curious and a driven person to figure out why you are getting insights. For the wrong person, this ability is wasted. That person will lose this meta point and all the innate knowledge it has gathered. - Also bad for "grinding" mentality. To get most out of the skill, you must seek out and fight many different types of dangerous monsters. Overall: This skill has the potential to be more valuable than "internal energy control" and "external energy control" combined, but it starts from zero and you will have to build it up yourself by taking risks. The hidden curses are also dangerous, the wrong person with this skill will end up losing it. The right person with this skill will gain an understaning worth several innate knowledge meta points, though they might have holes in their knowledge base. If they gain enough, they might even recover their memories without the help of a meta point. --- So these are good ways to spend meta points imo. You gotta remember, you can get a 3x multiplier on all your stats with a meta point and a 9x multiplier with 2 meta points, 27 with 3. If the DE could somehow trade her 2 meta points for 2 3x multipliers, she'd have 9x more stats, she would truly be invincible and might even be able to fight lvl 7 monsters, but innate knowledge might allow her to grow stats without the system's help, so it might be better over the long term. The most important thing is that meta points should open new avanues of growth because growing via buying stats will hit a wall.

Gio

Love where the story is going keep up the good work... Mama needs her crack!!!
