Giles, Once again in a school. Not the librarian this time. Guess he got tired of being yelled at by Principles, so he became one.
Yes, we have cafeteria's like this one in my school.
We also had a pool. @ actually, one in Junior high and one in High School.

David was a huge fan of Doctor Who growing up and he loved Sarah Jane, I feel like that childlike joy comes through in that first scene. I haven't seen much of classic who so i don't know what Sarah Jane's relationship with the Doctor was like in the classic era, but i feel like David and Elizabeth played the two old friends who had a very strong connection very well. Also, i am from South Australia and never seen a cafeteria like that either, so i just don't think we have them here.

This was my intro to Sarah Jane Smith and K9, they pretty much were my link to Classic Who, because I remember during times when present Who was in-between seasons, I started watching some the old show but only the ones with Sarah and K9 and then the ones without them, and of course her own show. Glad to see your reaction to Giles, you know whenever British actors who have been in US tv shows playing had guys (cause all brits are bad according to the yanks), they play good guys in UK shows. However I feel Tony Head has had the opposite problem. In Buffy, US show=good guy, this episode, Merlin and others UK shows=bad guy.

I haven't seen much of classic Who, but David really sells it when he says, "Goodbye - MY Sarah Jane!" Gets me everytime. I feel like you can really feel their history and how important she is to him, even now after all that time.
I think David drew from his own passion for the show and its history, being a huge fan (arguably the biggest fan); and this story just let him be a little bit of a fanboy.
Like, imagine if Shan got cast in a Buffy revival, playing Giles in a new body or something, and then the character runs into Buffy.
Tony Head is, I believe, a huge fan of Doctor Who himself; and even auditioned to play the 8th Doctor (which he didn't get) for a Doctor Who TV movie in '96, that was intended to launch a revival of the series (which failed); and would have been not long before he was cast as Giles.
I'd love to see Tony Head as the Doctor. Or as Dumbledore, actually; apropos of nothing. Or just in anything, really.

Yes, we know who you are. (Technically it already should, the running gag was started back in the Christmas Invasion)

Sarah Jane Smith. Companion to the 4th Doctor, played by Tom Baker.
To put a bit of scaling in regards to the Doctor's monologue about seeing his companions age and eventually wither.
For Sarah Jane "merely" 30 years passed between her being left by the 4th Doctor and meeting the 10th.
However for the Doctor some 150 years had passed. He was in his mid 700's during his 4th incarnation and is currently around 900 years old, as far as he admits.
Realistically he's probably closer to 2600 years old by the time of his 10th incarnation but the Doctor kinda stopped counting for a while and then he constantly started saying any random age that sounded about right.
Eventually he settled on 900 when he turned into the 9th Doctor, despite having been over 1000 before Classic Who even ended.
Like I said, he lost track at some point.
The Doctor's age is fickle. Generally just go with whatever the Doctor says at any given moment. It's easier than wracking your brain about it like I'm doing right now.
Regardless, what I'm trying to say is:
Had the Doctor never left Sarah Jane she would've been dead for several lifetimes before the Doctor ever met Rose.
This goes for almost all of the Doctor's companions over the years.
There have only been a few companions in Classic Who who could've kept up with the Doctor's aging, as he occasionally travelled with other Time Lords, like his own granddaughter for example.
But even that would've found an early end, due to the time war. As the Doctor says.
He's the only one of his kind that's left.

just jim, commenting on my favorite reactor... you of course lol. GILES! Loved that, yeah Sarah Jane was on TV back in the 70's. I watched them growing up as I was born in the 80's and loved the 4th Doctor and Sarah Jane. Nostalgia indeed. Enjoyed this. Thank you.

Just James, Patreon member (one day this will make sense) of course Russell T Davies is a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer he even cited the show as an influence on his take on Doctor Who and this episode is a direct homage, with strange goings-on in a school, monsters, bat like creatures and Anthony Head playing a villain.
Anthony remarked on set that the Krillitane name made him sound like a hair product.
On the 23rd of August 2005 Elisabeth Sladen shot her first scene for Doctor Who in nearly 30 years. She started with the 3rd Doctor but is mostly remembered for her run with the 4th, Initially she was worried her scenes would be nothing more than a cameo or even worse a derogatory portrayal of her iconic character, but when she heard that she would be playing a pivotal role in the episode and it played into the nostalgia of having the nations favourite companion back in the mix she jumped at the chance, her first scenes shot was the little scene where she asked βwhat have you done with K9?β and then some running, love the running. Elisabeth Sladen died of cancer on April 19th 2011.
K9 made his debut in 1977 (the groovy times) K9 rapidly grew in popularity even getting his own TV show which sadly was put down after one episode, you can find K9 and company on YouTube.
I adore this episode it has everything from giant bats, robot dogs, catty behaviour and science in the classroom. What kind of student were you Shan? Sat up front learning? or chatting in the back, I was in the middle not paying attention. Two roses from me. Toodle pip.

Love the immediate reaction on seeing Giles.
Sarah Jane was Companion to the 3rd and 4th Doctors from 1973 to 1976.
Ahh, I wish they'd cut out a few of those scenes of the children "typing".
'Just constantly press the middle row on the keyboard, No-one will know.'
Hmm, maybe don't go shouting that Kenny blew up the school.
