The Devil Judge - EP 4

remember how last week I said I like being confused

Comments

iirc Singapore & Malaysia still use canning as corporal punishment. If you look up the size of the cane it's BRUTAL.

Jer

oh I'm sure

Freddie

lets just say the dom/sub tag gets a workout on ao3 for this show

Have you watched Strangers From Hell? You'd like that too probably

Thirding! There's quite a large fandom crossover tween the two shows - something about conniving dilfs corrupting law-abiding twinks... If DJ is my all-time fave drama, BE is probably a close second. Very very complex, difficult, dense, intelligent storytelling, non-stop twists and turns, a fantastic soundtrack, and it was written AND directed by women, and it shows both in terms of the way violence is depicted/discussed, and in the wonderfully well-rounded female characters (and the whole supporting cast in general - not a 2D role in sight). I'd say it's grittier than DJ, definitely more grounded in reality, possibly a tad darker, and a tad slower. I think of it as a psychologically-driven character and community piece disguised as an incredibly well-crafted murder mystery.

"He's still living in that house??" *evil cackling* ...I'm saying nothing! The Master Seo/Sunah scene - I think the original subs I saw (Viki?) did a much better job here, because they have him use the term "befouling" powerless women, and then after that line, when both him and Sunah go still, and he looks scared, what she says next is "If a dog bites a person, does that person become dirty?", so when you put that all together the very strong implication is that she herself was one of those "powerless" women, and the reason he looked so scared is because he realised he'd effectively just said she'd been "befouled". I think a large part of the reason I'm deeply attracted to Minister Cha is that her styling reminds me of latter seasons Scully which automatically means I'm in love. She's one of the characters the writer talked bout genderflipping - how in most kdramas she'd be a he, and the dutiful husband/father who gets emotional and seems the more affectionate parent would be the dutiful wife/mother: "Cha Kyung-hee is simply a powerful and ambitious figure, and Yoon Soo-hyun is just a detective who wants to protect her first love. They are both familiar characters who often appear as men in Korean dramas. In contrast, the role of Kim Ga-on is often given to female characters." So yeah, I love how ruthlessly she squashed her maternal side, that was a great mini-twist. Just want to point out that the main guy seen cheering on the flogging appears very briefly in the first ep when we see members of the public voting to convict the businessman... Just like the old guy from ep 2 who keeps reappearing, I love the show's use of seemingly throwaway characters. Speaking of the flogging, can I just say that I really love your take on it, because I swear I saw so many fans get so caught up in Yohan's sexy machinations that they seemed to entirely lose their moral compass and forget that his whole shtick is a large part of why this show is a DYSTOPIA - we're not meant to be rooting for the reintroduction of public flagellation! And there's a reason most ppl look horrified watching it and the ones actually enjoying the show are nationalist thugs. Yohan is SUCH a seductive character for so many reasons (his face definitely being one of them), but you're spot-on with the devil parallels - again, there's a reason the writer has invoked Faust! There's a lot more I could say bout that, especially bout the show as a cautionary tale in light of certain 'eat the rich'-esque events in the US late last year, but now's neither the time nor the place! Just think it's a testament to the show's brilliance that 4 years after it aired it can still provoke such thoughtful and relevant discussions. And the shot you mentioned, of the flogging on the big screen behind Yohan while he's leaving his office: it's how he can't even be bothered to watch the fruits of his labour cos, frankly, he doesn't care - let's not pretend he's doing this out of some deep-rooted indignation against socio-economic injustice! He's got his own agenda and, like he said himself, Youngmin was just bait, so once that hand's been played, Yohan's over it. Oh that magnificent magnificent Mephistophelean bastard! Character Of All Time. On a lighter, gayer note: I'm tormented by the fact that Yohan's wearing a dressing gown when he comes into Gaon's room, but the next time we see them he's already suited up, so question is...did he get changed in front of Gaon?? Speaking of Gaon, his 'ew, rich ppl' face at the charity do when the Rachmaninov is playing never fails to crack me up - so relatable. I'm so happy you're enjoying the show and it's providing you with so much food for thought!

Just jumping in as another beyond evil fan! I would say it's similar but they're police detectives solving crimes, instead of judges. It's very well written, directed, and the acting & chemistry between the leads is Oscar worthy in my opinion.

Nadia

I literally keep forgetting he’s in got7 like he was born to act

Freddie

I haven’t! maybe one to add to the next poll 🧐? Is it similar

Freddie

freddie's face during the wardrobe scene pls i guffawed

bella

Hi freddiee! I really enjoy your reactions!! Have you watched beyond evil?

Aim H

Every episode I am left amazed at how talented an actor Jinyoung is. His desperation in the church was so well done and felt palpable.

Nadia

real

Freddie

ok good I'm glad I'm not alone!!!

Freddie

I'm watching this for the first time with you and I'm loving it but I'm just as confused as you lmao

Pips

When it comes to the judge, i just trusted my gut while watching and didn't overthink it. i love hearing your theories though. enjoy ep 5 :D

Kelly Anne
