A “fop” back then was a man who was really obsessed with his clothes and his appearance. Usually overly so. And definitely his social standing.
Also, a con-man or flim-flam man is what that phony tonic salesman was. Not a pyramid scheme at all.

(And I am still bitter that we'll never get the third part, because of the stupid fucking production company screwing people around with finances and logistics on the tour.)
