Oh, and "How is that a complete phone number?" 5-digit dialing was the only way things worked when I was growing up. For instance, 2-6028 was my best friend's number. Phones were grouped into exchanges, often given a name, such as "Whitehall", which encoded the extra two digits for a 7-digit number. To reach a different prefix, you dialed the full 7 digits. In movies, you'll often hear numbers like "Klondike 5 0123" If you look at a telephone keypad, you'll see each digit has letters associated with it. In this case, KLondike translates to "55", since the 5 key has JKL on it. (WHitehall is 94, BTW.) So the movie numbers are all "555-01XX", which the phone company reserved for non-existent numbers.

It's a really good piece of social commentary. Remember that this was before the Civil Rights movement, and the treatment of black people, the common use of pejorative words for them and to them, and the *acceptance* of their status you see in Annie were not even commented on by most people. It must be hard to really grasp that environment for younger people, for whom the Civil Rights movement was 20-30 years before they were born. Just remember, it's a *good* thing that this culture is hard to understand now. But I think you also miss the depth of Sarah Jane's problem, and why her reaction was not as extreme or foolish as it might appear today. Sarah Jane wants to be an equal, but the only way for that to happen is for her to be white (even then, she's still female, so still not fully equal.) I think her drive for equality, and her willingness to sacrifice everything to get it, is the counterpoint to Lora's need for fame and fortune. The original version (1932?) had Claudette Colbert ("It Happened One Night") in the lead role. In some ways, it's a better story, but I think they toned down the racism a bit compared to this 1959 version.
