Hi everyone!
I'm making this a combined new years wishes and devlog since I didn't have the time to do anything new years eve themed.
Anyway, yet another year has passed and Peasant's Quest is now 3 years old. Well, I released the first demo in February or March 2017, but I actually started working on it during my Christmas vacation.
I never imagined I'd still be doing this three years later, and certainly wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for all the feedback and support I've gotten from you guys along the way. Thank you so much for allowing me to continue this hobby for so long, I really appreciate it!
Although I have long since given up on setting a date for finishing the game, my goal for 2020 is to at least complete the main campaign (That Nergal Qetesh thingy). Then we'll see how much side quests will be added later. But as long as there are still mechanics I can add to improve the game (and people still want me to develop it further) I see no reason in ending it just yet. I've experimented with some mechanics already; pregnancy, crafting, crop growth, and even the infamous hunger system, to name a few. There are still three more major mechanics I like to add in the future. These are Vampiric powers, smithing of magically enhanced weapons/armor, and raids. That last mechanic brings me to todays devlog.
The Shakala update made me think of a concept I originally wanted to do before starting PQ, but didn't know how to pull of at the time. So I fell for the temptation, and have deviated from my originally purely story based update to adding a raiding and somewhat empire building mechanic. The plan is to let the player increase the size of his goblin tribe, which makes them more effective at plundering not just money from neighboring settlements or tribes, but also females (which help him increase the population). Of course as the goblin raids increase enemies (pesky knights and such) will attack his tribe to exterminate them and rescue the females. Inevitably some goblins will perish fending of these attacks, so a constant supply of goblin babies will be needed to keep the tribe strong.
I won't be able to complete the entire system this update, but I'll be laying down the basic structure. You'll be able to go on a raid to capture a female, increase your population and receive plunder tribute based on your population size. But I don't have time to add counter raids or more raidable females yet. I have way too many scenes to create as it is for this update already. I'm currently working on my fifth scene (of nine planned). I've also made a lot of progress scripting and creating new maps. My goal is to have all gameplay scripting (script for scenes will have to wait until they are done) and maps done by the end of the week. Hopefully that will give me enough time to playtest, bugfix and create the remaining scenes before the end of January. It' going to be tough to complete all scenes by then, but I'm going to try!
Well, that's about it for now! I wish you all the best for 2020, and stay safe!
