Frieren shattering the barrier and confessing even she would find it impossibly difficult to fight a water mage in the rain and Denken going in for the fist fight are just absolutely iconic scenes ngl

2025-02-17 19:00:03 +0000 UTCIt sounds brutal to kill, but all test takers are going into the test knowing this is a possibility. They aren't being lured in and then surprised with it. Like Flamme said, Serie isn't a mage of a peaceful era, so naturally the organization she created would be brutal as well. Plus the test basically forces them into combat with each other and since all party members have to be present at dawn, killing one is a surefire way to take the whole party out of the competition, meaning not having to fight all 3 or risk they could take the Stille back. Since killing is allowed, they have to assume any other party is ready to kill, meaning that they have to be as well. It is quite a nasty loop that forces everyone to think and be more brutal, because they think anyone else is. That is unless they are powerful enough to be able to show mercy. For instance, Fern had to be extremely skilled to hold back enough to not kill Ehre, when Ehre's defense went down because she ran out of mana. A single extra shot and it would have been over, but because she was skilled and strong, she was able to show mercy to Ehre as well as force Wirbel to retreat without killing him. I think the saying "Mercy is a privilege of the strong." is displayed very well here, even though it gives one a bad taste in your mouth.
