Blog 24: Fighting Game is Something So Great

It's blog time. Not gonna make it anything big though. Just want to casually talk about fighting games.

So I grew up with fighting games in general. Been there since all the SNES weird fighting games, golden age PS one fighting games, dark age of them, and now it's like fighting game as a genre has been receiving back its glory, to me at least.

Been playing Mortal Kombat 11 lately (Kung Lao main here). Still hop back in Tekken 7 online once in a while (Leo main there), being super excited about upcoming Granblue Fantasy Versus with that latest Daigo VS Fuudo beta matches, Samurai Shodown dropping the best preorder bonus in fighting game history, DBFZ, SC6, hearing about UNIIST being in EVO, and even with Smash Ultimate which I haven't played a Smash game since the Wii.

Just so much good stuff for a fighting game fan this year. 2019 is looking to be the best year for fighting game fan in the last decade.

And I'm aware I'm not the only one around. Seems like a good chunk of you guys are a big FGC too judging from the amount of votes on fighting game characters on the poll at least and I'm glad it is being this way. I love fighting games even though I'm not that good at them.

So what have you guys been playing in term of fighting game or anything related? Any upcoming news you're excited about? Please leave a comment, cuz I'm thrilled to talk about it with you in the replies.

It could be hentai related too if you want to talk about that because hey, that's what we do around here.

Also this is the Daigo vs Fuudo in GBFV I mentioned. Highly recommend checking this out. This game is looking to be really good so far. There is auto combo in there but it's nothing crazy like auto combos in DBFZ. They look to be just LMH>Special in this game and there is a single button special but by using easy special button it has longer cooldown so casuals can enjoy the game without interrupting pro players at all. This could be the smartest approach to fighting game accessibility I've ever seen yet >>> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bbR3_20-_E&t=1s

I really like the Neko Girl (Uriko? I don't remember) in Bloody Roar and I remember the Mole guy to be pretty OP. Also It's a shame they abandoned Bushido Blade. It was a fun game

Michele Bianchi

cool

Frank Leo

Oh man I miss Bloody Roar and Bushido Blade. Now that furries are everywhere they really should bring Bloody Roar back. Kill la Kill game is looking really interesting though I don't think that anime is very fighting game suitable. Even counting all the side characters the roster is just gonna be too small but we will see.

Fuya

I have yet to try that minigame. I'm just too lazy to build up the Simaris scan quests lol but I will do some day

Fuya

I have been playing a lot of fighting games in my life, like Tekken, Soul Calibur, Bushido Blade, Bloody Road, WakuWaku 7, Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, Persona Arena and Dead Or Alive. I would like to play them sometimes but fighting online is impossible. People are too good, I am in mostly for the waifus XD I saw an advertisement for a BlazBlue fighting games by Arc and it looks really good. I am waiting for that adn Kill La Kill

Michele Bianchi

There is one ... with Warframe, you can install an "arcade machine" on your ship which allows you to play the "frames" against other players in DOA style.

Frank Leo

I wish there is a Warframe fighting game

Fuya

That game was fun and the story is magnificent. I wish it plays a little less janky tho

Fuya

Oh I believe ya. Most Jojo games are really good. Eyes of Heaven broke my heart, though. It's a really damn shame that it doesn't have any form of local multiplayer. That killed it for me.

Warframe ...

Frank Leo

Yeah that's the one. Highly recommending it if you haven't played it. It has surprisingly really good story mode as well

Fuya

I played the crap out of 'em. Mostly single player, though. I'm one of these weird people that loves a good story in a fighting game. Buuut to each its own. Most of my fighting game-loving friends actually hate sprite-based fighting games like BB so I can get why. Jojo fighting game on PS1... Is that the one where Pet Shop is an OP bastard?

I was super terrible at fighting games at first too. Strangely enough my first really invested fighting game experience was the Capcom Jojo game back in PS1 lol then I later got a PSP and had been crazy over Tekken 5 in there since it's easy to carry around and battle your friends in college days. I need to play more BB. I bought all the BB games cuz I like the characters but they're somehow the least played games in my collection for some reason. I'm just not that good at mainline Arcsys games (GG and BB I mean) but looking forward to seriously playing GBFV

Fuya

I'm in the same clan of people who sucks at fighting games but enjoy the hell out of it. And we already talked about this so you already know I'm an Arksys fanboy. But yeah, I actually started playing fighting games pretty late but when I was but a young lass, I still remember going to arcades (I fucking miss arcades) and being super impressed and full of wonder, just looking at people playing Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2, then immediately trying these games and getting wrecked in seconds by the computer. So for me, people playing these games were simply amazing. I guess my first REAL fighting game was Soul Calibur 2 for the Gamecube, though I remember playing somme Killer Instinct on the N64 at my cousin's house. Then I got into Street Fighter IV, was still terrible at it, gave up and it, then I got curious about trying Blazblue after I saw two videos on Youtube. First was a ''TOP 10 MANLY CHARACTERS IN GAMING'' (I had shit tastes in youtube Channels back in the days. I mean shit, these guys made a debate show à la Death Battle and actually argued Mega Man couldn't win against Revolver Ocelot because he can only move in a 2D space) and they mentionned Bang Shishigami. Then, my interest was picked again when Death Battle made an episode featuring Taokaka and I decided to pick the game up and it has consummed my soul ever since. So TL;DR without my boring life story: Dem games be hype as shit, yo. Also I'm super hyped about Granblue Versus. LADIVA IS SO FABULOUS

All of these reflect my whole life lol may be minus Mace: the dark age and Waku Waku 7. I need to try those. I also feel like fighting game is the best kind of game to invite a group of friends to and sit around the couch playing together. Right now that games shifted to PC that kind of atmosphere is nowhere to be found. It's a little sad.

Fuya

I can see that. That's why fighting game is such a niche (but strangely very big) genre of gaming.

Fuya

Used to play a loooot of fighting games back when I was in school. Soul Calibur, Last Blade, Rival Schools, Street Fighter, Power Stone, Street Fighter, Samurai Shodown, Mace: The Dark Age, Waku Waku 7, Tekken, Dead or Alive, and a few others. Going to the arcade in the 90's meant a lot of fighting games, so it was exciting going from there to having them at home on the SNES, PS1, PS2, Dreamcast, and Neo Geo. And exciting visiting video game hentai boards on my parents dial-up. XD Unfortunately, these days, I do all my gaming on PC and handheld (3DS). And the fighting game genre is kinda limited... Got SF4 and 5 on Steam, but it's just not the same as it used to be. On the flip side, the fighting game hentai is better than it used to be. And it takes much less time to get to (Chun Li and Mai are still hawt, even after decades).

Sean Lennon

Fighting games are something I have great respect for, and enjoy watching immensely, but I never got into them past button mashing when I was young. Learning to play them now seems like such a daunting task, so many hours of practice just to get some fundamentals under your belt. I just don't have that kind of dedication for video games anymore, which makes me a little sad.

Krinklez

You can have up to 4 players at once so its definetly possible. It even has ranked play.

Dajokaman759

I certainly know Lethal League. Saw a lot of streamers playing it and it's really cool. Seems like a game you'd enjoy with a few friends playing along.

Fuya

You ever tried a game called Lethal League or Lethal League: Blaze? Its basically a mix of pong, super smash bros and pong. Even though that concept sounds weird, its somehow perfected so well.

Dajokaman759

I can agree with that. I wish they would have kept individual character story mode.

Jason Hager

It's not just the microtransaction too. Even with the microtransactions, DoA5 was still a way better game in many ways at its time. DoA6 is just straight up bad unfinished cash grab. All the new characters are super bland. Story is some how even worse than DoA5. This is the worst game in the series by far and I'm sad that it's this way.

Fuya

Kanna looks very cute. They are putting more effort into Venus Vacation because its a gacha game.

Jason Hager

There are ways of fixing it but I doubt they will. They love the microtransactions too much to give us a robust content fighting game.

Jason Hager

Yeah exactly. Things went downhill there. I'd appreciate the revival of Virtua Fighter instead. The current state of DoA is just... bad and there's hardly any way to recover it as a fighting game. Also here is the new oni girl Kanna in Venus vacation >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rT1R7rBr1B4&t=1s

Fuya

Yeah DoA been weird after Itagaki was terminated, the graphics look way better but other than that it just feels like a cash grab. I havent played Venus Vacation so I dont know anything about the new girls.

Jason Hager

DoA6 is weird for me in a not so good way I guess. They pushed so hard for EVO and ended up getting nothing. Also the fact that more development has gone into their beach game than their main line fighting game is just silly (that new loli oni girl appearing in that game and not DoA6? Come on) I will take any female Draphs in GBFV at this point. Sturm would be awesome.

Fuya

Only fighting game that I have been playing as of late is DoA6. I am excited for GBVS, ArcSys does it again and I hope Sturm is announced but we will see.

Jason Hager

Arcana Heart was great oh man I wish there was a bigger community around that series... and you're right wow there has been no female Draph announced so far. We really need at least a couple of them in the roster.

Fuya

I love fighting games, generally speaking. Mostly Eastern ones. Blazblue, Gulity Gear, Arcana Heart, Soul Calibur, Dragonball FighterZ, Under Night, and Smash Bros are all games franchises I’ve greatly enjoyed. The new Granblue just straight up looks amazing (although if I don’t see a female Draph soon Arc is getting a letter xD).

Reficul Terumi

lol I can feel you there but to be fair TK has always been like that since TK2. Aside from the very main casts all the characters are just non-canonically there and their endings have been nothing but TK7 really did them wrong in term of minor endings there are, just lame.

Fuya

ikr GBFV's system is looking to be super cool. Oh man idk if I would be able to play anyone from either USA or EU tho, the ping would be obnoxiously high (if that's where you're from but may be not pardon me!)

Fuya

Tekken was my fighting game growing up. Tekken 7 disappointed me a lot. I avidly followed the story, then they decided to make lazy 15 sec endings for non-Mishima clan characters that had nothing to do with anything. I guess now the best thing about fighting games for me are the girls that come from them.

Crystalplanet

Big anime FG fan you are and that's great. I forgot to mention BBtag in the post lol I should try to get into Uniist seriously though but man learning that game is hard.

Fuya

Smash has a very weird place in my heart. I'm so nervous around falling off the edge and edge guard in that game. It's the only thing preventing me from investing more time into it lol and SF4 was some good time.

Fuya

Recently got back into DBFZ but I've maybe been grinding Guilty Gear. I'm excited for GBVS too! It looks so good! The cooldown system is really interesting to me and for some moves for cooldown is basically a non factor if you do the motion instead. I'm really hyped and we should play sometime when it comes out :)

Xamists

I only play blazblue, unist, melty,g gear and sf5 casually from time to time, nothing beat a feeling of being able to pull off some anime-ass come back in fighting game.

I’ve been playing Smash Bros ever since N64 and when I was in school the local hockey rink had a street fighter 2 cabinet so I played that sometimes. I’ve played a bit of Street Fighter 4 and every once in a while I’ll try a random fighting game that gets my interest. I’m not really very good at fighting games, but I still play them every now and then.
