In Arioch's case, she went insane after her village and children got destroyed by the empire, she made her pact with two elementals to gain power but in this world, A pact takes away a part of you, in her case, it was her womb, meaning she can't get pregnant. So she eats kids as sort of a deranged way to try getting a child inside her. Btw, the main character is mute violent psychopath trying to save his sister who has incestuous feelings towards him, and the one party member who isn't insane or cruel is a pedophile (though he knows lusting for children is wrong and doesn't actually act on his urges.)
