Episode 2 Release! And high quality download

[OK! I think I figured out the colorspace issue- sorry about that.]

It's out! Dynamo Dream Episode 2 - A Single Point in Space!

WOO! Thank you all SO much everyone here for helping make it happen! Seriously- I've been able to focus on this way way more than I would have otherwise, and for the first time I'm feeling pretty optimistic!

The 4k version seems to be streaming well on some systems, but isn't buffering great on others (although the opening Primordial Chaos will probably always resist compression (and I'm enough of a dork that I kind of like that, conceptually))- but I'm hoping it just hasn't propagated to other global servers yet?

In the meantime, if anyone wants to download a high-res version (5gb or 10gb) directly, you can do it here:

Single Point in Space 4 Gigs (recommended, probably)

I'm really happy with it! This was one of those "made in the edit" experiences. I mean, that's always how it goes, but especially with this one; even though we filmed the script, the original timeline was just a bunch of contextless footage of a guy sitting around on a greenscreen, and I'm delighted that the final episode feels in any way like a cohesive experience :D.

This episode also marked the start of a new kind of workflow- everything before's always been very seat-of-the-pants, but a system's slowly developing that makes me really think that we might be able to wrap these things up a bit faster. I'm actually really excited about the story (been working on it for 16 years!) and I was worried for a while I'd let the production value get in the way of that, but I think we've found some ways in the coming months to get the story told without sacrificing quality- I'll talk more about it soon!

I want to do a breakdown or two, but let me know if you have any specific questions! I'm also excited to focus on the patreon for a bit, here- I got a little carried away wrapping up this episode the past few weeks.

I hope all is well, and thank you all again!!!

Episode 2 Release! And high quality download

I´m new to your patreon, and I was insanely impressed. Love all the design work.

Jimmy Art Director

After several rewatches I can say that this is my favourite episode so far

Davide Bertolini

This was so good! the textures just blew my mind! Thank you.

Brent Holzheimer

Brilliant, had me transfixed from start to finish

Zander

absolutely beautiful!!

aviphyr

Black levels in Quicktime 10.5 ruined my first experience with Episode 2, unfortunately. Quicktime 7 does not alter the look of the overall youtube colour space, but with the 5Gb download version I was surprised that it did that, exposing greyish blacks. Going extra to Premiere and fixing a 5G file plus export might be a tad too much for me, I guess...;)

Herwig

Omg that was so good. I don’t even know what to say. So so good

J.D.Lee

Holy moly, that is insane! Nice work man!

Niels Hoogland

You did such a good job Ian!!! 😭😭😭 so proud of you man! Keep going strong! You’re making great things and stuff 😍☺️🤩🥳😜

Killian Tell Strassheim

Hello Ian, could you please post the music for this episode somewhere that we can listen to it. In particular the end credits song is simply amazing and I would love to just have that on repeat for the rest of my life!!! Thank you!!

Kays Al-Atrakchi

Yes, please do some breakdowns for us, current videos do cover the basics but there's a lot of new techniques I see that can be covered among us here someday.

I Like it Hardcore Tv

My fix for the black levels on Linux was opening it with SMPlayer and lowering gamma to about -40 in the video equaliser. I think SMPlayer has a windows version as well, it's a really good player

Davide Bertolini

Quick fix for the black levels: import into premiere > right click on the clip > modify > interpret footage > go to color management section at the bottom and select color space override to Rec.709

Benjamin Ades

THANKS A LOT, YOUTUBE WAS FREAKING IT UP

Amitrakshar Parker

Do I have a name here? I'm not shure :o))) But anyway, yes there is a question: looks like (not shure) your spaceman has got underwater hair waving in the air (or interstellar vacuum? :o) ) at 10:35 sth, like they did it in pirates of the carribean? or maybe it was just a hair dryer? Anyway, my name is Claudius

Claudius

Das wirklich was besonders <3

Jasper Bodag

That was amazing. I'm (nearly) speechless. Thank you!

David Reynolds

Hi friends! So if you are wondering why space looks really gray in the downloaded versions, this might help if you want to play it in VLC. In VLC, to to Tools>Preferences>Video Tab/Cone> and under the output dropdown menu (which should be in the Display Box Section) select DirectX (DirectDraw) option. That's worked for me. However, if you are like me and spent a few days figuring out how to play Blu-Ray Discs on VLC, don't forget to switch it back to "Automatic" when you've got a Blu-Ray you want to watch again. That took another two days to figure out... Thanks again Ian!! I'm excited for Pete!!

Clint Shelton

That.. was ... Siiiiiick!! The escape sequence through the asteroid field was so epic!! He was like 'VrooooooowWWW, SkiyurrrRRRR, BzzgzrgzrgzrrrRRgzgGG!!!' And he's whipping around the thrusters and doing all that creative maneuvering. Yes! Everything about this makes me smile.

Thomas Heaney

Wow what an achievement and great acting performance too. You really shine here!!

Thorsten-Tobias Heinze

Since we finally have structural info about the "States" in the "Reality Strata" I figured I'd throw together a map. Inspired mostly by bubble chamber particle tracks. Image is here: https://twitter.com/dudecon/status/1641552881374449666 And here's the source file for all you patrons: http://tryop.com/MediaDocs/Dynamo/Reality%20Strata%20Map%20Packed.blend EDIT: Twitter crushed the image, so here's a high quality version: http://tryop.com/MediaDocs/Dynamo/Reality%20Strata.jpg

Paul and Anna Spooner

Awesome! Just downloaded and had a peek. SO GOOD! I'm looking forward to watching it on my big 130" projection screen.

Christopher Kou

Knowing some of your process I am super inspired by this! Makes me want to get out and start finding old electronics, taking pictures and photo scanning to kitbash some environments together. Anyway, you are very much the master of this. Loved the episode

Will Clark

Holy crap!!! The first 2min i wasn't shure if i rly watch an dynamo dream episode. Everything is so clean and sharp. Normally your render had this "vintage" style and many things were hidden in depth or motionblur. But not this time. Your progress is just insane. Can't wait for the pete episode.

VoiD010AUT

Amazing! I'm glad to be a patron :) I'd also love to learn more about that system to wrap these things up a bit faster :)

Miko Dela

Amazing. It turned out really well, and the story got me hooked now! :)

Malte Langheim

This is so epic! The amount of detail and world building. The quality. Everything. Sir, you are a god.

Ossi Honkanen

Amazing work on this one, I loved the episode! I also really liked the music, did you have a hand in that or was that mostly the people who did the sound? I also wanna say that you do a really good job of avoiding spoilers in your tutorials. Obviously it's the nature of what you do that we'll have seen a lot from the episode before it's out, but you do a good job of not showing key things and revealing what the story will be about

Tardsmat

Hey Ian, did any of the FX stuff change base on either choices, like did you decide that you needed a new line read or something then have to tweak the FX?

David McSween

I'm really, really impressed. Visuals and story. Even the goddamn subtitles are hilarious! "Space phone rings," "All the alarms." I'd love to see more breakdowns of your shots. Not necessarily building a shot from scratch, but going through your thoughts and decisions for some of your favorites.

Robin Squares

Congratulation Ian! It's an amazing work!! Damn... I can see your art rising up :D

nicolasben

If you're experiencing black level problems, use either MPCHC or Windows Media Player Legacy!

Arthur Guseynov

No words Ian, just f'ing beautiful.....

Jason

oh yesssss, i loved the retrospective for episode 1, would love to have one for this one too.

Jason

Amazing work, and a very intriguing episode hinting at dark things to come. Even though I've been seeing the greenscreen footage and the ship model for months as you've been working on it, I still bought it visually as a live set.

Pete Burges

I'm having the same issue

Evan Barron

Wait. Am I the only one for whom the Patreon release didn't work? I downloaded the 5GB version but had to watch the episode on YT because the premium version had no blacks at all on my device (MacBook M1). It looked like log footage; like the final color transform was not applied. Has not anyone experienced the same thing? I tried both VLC and Quicktime -- the premium version looked terrible. So, I watched on YT.

Nikita

congratulations!

Robert Singler Jr

Been waiting for this for a while and loved it! Felt like it was an episode of "shit, I was working from home in my pajamas and they threw me into a video call" situation on a galactic scale.

Andrew Finch

Huh! It looks really black on my end. I wonder if it's the codec, or the player, or the monitors? I do know watching the YouTube version on my samsung TV boosts all the black levels pretty ridiculously.

Ian Hubert

You do at a certain tier! And I was going to do a secondary pre-release! But then I... really wanted to post it :P

Ian Hubert

Congratulations!!

Eliot Mack

Between watching this and going to see Akira in the cinema on a whim it's been a pretty great day of sci-fi cinema inspiration for me. :) thanks

Tim

Yep the black level is looking grey for me too on the download (5gb one at least)

Tim

Made a 30 second edit in portrait aspect for YouTube Shorts. I have it unlisted for now, figured maybe you wanted to do one yourself and didn't want to steal your thunder. Plus I'm not the world's best editor, you could probably do a way better job: https://youtube.com/shorts/D2_Aoobi4w0 Here's the Blender edit file: http://tryop.com/MediaDocs/Dynamo/DD_E2_30sec_edit.blend Should work on the 10GB source file.

Paul and Anna Spooner

I wanna be Ian when I grow up. Your work is incredible, man. Keep it up. Thank you for inspiring my filmmaking and VFX journey.

Stephen T

It worked again, LET'S GOOO!

Jona Müllmann

Wow that is so amazing! Beautiful work and story!

Rafal Janicki

It is so great! I was on the seat of my chair and was really happy to see how it all panned out! Especially seeing how the sausage was made I have an even better appreciation for how much work you and the team did on it! Highest of fives!

Mason Lev

So good! I really liked this episode and am so excited for what's to come. An old VFX retrospective like for the 1st episode would be so cool to see, and maybe just the thought process of some shots like you did in the Making long shots tutorial :)

Daniel Skomorovsky

But seriously, other than a surprisingly high black level on my 75" Samsung TV, it looks Amaze-balls. And it's super nice to see a good old proper DYNAMO episode. I'm back to the good old KarmaPirates days and I am salivating for more.

Zap Andersson

Wait what, we don't get any pre-release as patreons? Humbug! :P

Zap Andersson

Thank you Ian :). Fantastic 2nd part!

Christian Hoppe

Fantastic work!!

Paul Major

Well done Ian just watched it every shot is an amazing man I'd be happy to just make one shot as good haha love the opening transition from white noise to the stars nice :)

Ronnie Holland

Oh no, the download quota is exceeded, I came here for the download Version because the YouTube Version won't load properly and I don't want to watch this Masterpiece with buffer breaks every 5 seconds...

Jona Müllmann

Love the whole thing, I had to switch to the download version, the audio lifts so much better! Debating saying this, but there's a pop in the glow at the very end of the credits. Funnily it appears to pop off at different frames on youtube and the download version. So cool. Colour me inspired!!!!

Conor Flanagan

Congrats Ian! This is great!

Red Blueen

Ian- WOW! Was it all done in Blender, or?? I'd love more green screen integration videos, especially if a human is walking toward or away from camera.

gary hardesty

Holy Sh@% it’s so beautiful Ian! And intriguing. Congrats on finishing this, it’s a masterpiece. (One of the bar patrons has an uncanny resemblance to Ton Rosendaal, really weird. Maybe it’s just me.)

Stijn Windig

Awesome episode! I can't wait for the next one. And thanks for the dl link! I'm going to dl and rewatch to see the difference. Re streaming troubles, Youtube wasn't able to buffer to play at 1440p on my pc, but then when i watched on my ps5 in 4k it was fine after i restarted it a few times. Weird. I had some questions when I watched the episode but now I've forgotten. I'll repost if I can think of them.

Stephan

Mind-blowing...

Mohd Rashid Khan

Well done Ian!! Just watched 🙌🏻

Jamie Costa

Just fantastic!!

Scott Newstead

Can you release the soundtrack

Willis

Love this. The sound design is fantastic. I love the little sputtering lights on the back of the little star bot that he catches. Beautiful detail. Really nice stuff.

Joe Comeau

Everything is so amazing, and also the songs are amzing! Especially the song that start pumping when the spaceship is speeding up gives me chills!

Raffo VFX

What especially caught my eye was the coffee bean bag withe the bean guy mascot

Blemonade

Soooo amazing! I want to see a whole season!

BEN HAVIOUR

Watch Dynamo EP1 https://youtu.be/Sb6AqhT9quA

Paul and Anna Spooner

I think it's a Log colorspace encoding, which many video players don't know how to deal with. Blender does though, so just watch in Blender!

Paul and Anna Spooner

Watch Dynamo Dream EP1 https://youtu.be/LsGZ_2RuJ2A

Paul and Anna Spooner

Looks like it's encoded in log colorspace. Feel free to re-encode for your viewing pleasure.

Paul and Anna Spooner

Looks like it's encoded in log colorspace. Feel free to re-encode for your viewing pleasure.

Paul and Anna Spooner

Wonderful to see it all come together.... keep 'em coming! :D

Doug Brown

The Download ones are SO MUCH CLEANER than youtube wtf.

Jack_Wolfe

Yeah, the high quality version on google drive have broken black levels, feels like wrong gamma or color space were applied

KarlTheBee

Great work!!

Kieron Estrada

Absolute insanity. I love it, i cant wait to see what that guy unconscious at the start has to do with it.

Jack_Wolfe

Next week by the credit roll.

Paul and Anna Spooner

How long did it take you for this episode in comprison to the others episodes?

Fransoa

Showed my kids. They understood what was going on pretty well! Cody says the sound design reminds him of the game Hob when things move. When Gwen saw the ship transform she said "That's nice!"

Paul and Anna Spooner

As usual his Imperial Highness, King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Mister ! Mister IIIIan Hubert and his crew did it. Bravo et merci.

Olivier Netter

For me, I'd love you to go as in depth as you want on the process of making this video from beginning to end. Truly, I want to know the whole process. From you beginning to work on the story all those years ago, to writing this script and what that process looks like there (because I know you're seeing some of these images at that stage), then walking through the stages of production (especially the planning YOU DO into deciding what elements are on green screen, what is practical, what's a set.) And then in post, how you stay organized and on schedule (roughly). Do you storyboard? Shortlist? Previz? How exactly do plan a complicated sequence? I wanna see all that planning. It's a huge undertaking, this project, and as much insight into the process as you want to give us we will gladly take. How, Ian?! How??! I wanna know how! I want all the how! No how is too much how! Hooooooowwwwaaaaa!!!

Nathan Blanchard

I have the same problem with both files.

Noah Simpson

Not sure if It's just me, but the black levels on the 10gb file look off. I've tried a couple different video players and it's very light. Downloading the 5gb one now.

Noah Simpson

Mr Ian, oh my god, this is gorgeoussss... just, gorgeous! I fckn love it!

Martín Aversa

LOVE IT SO MUCH!!!! Love the low frequency satellites reading for a black hole!!

Blake Rizzo

That's crazy, all those details and that ghost creature, i want to know about that👍😎

David Jessen

Love that coffee machine. And hooked on the story!

Jodi Chamberlain

Cooool 🤟🏻🤟🏻🔥

Alim Bhuiyan

I loved it! Amazing work!

Al

It was freaking amazing. Incredible quality reached. Full of questioning too, super hyped for what's next! I would love a in depth tutorial about your new workflow and general scene management workflow. Thanks Ian!

Xavier Albert

Very cool!! Congrats.

Jan Daghelinckx

truly, depressingly, obviously incredible!

TW Stout

Maaagic!

Boris

Wow!! I was sad when all the little space robots got sucked into the thing. Also I wonder if you know just how good this is, it's REALLY good.

Paul McBryde

yeah!!!! amazing!!

Casey Meehan

Nova! It all looked puik. A humongous amount of inspiration in this episode. Fantastic work Ian!

Timo van Wyk

I am very happy to see that people commenting on YouTube (myself included) are losing their minds over the episode and the next to come. Which is just to prove that we as a species that shape dreams into real things and beautiful imagery are yet to be conquered by our artificial overlords. And your art is a perfect reminder that we will not be owned by pasteurized artificial crap. Absolute masterpiece, thank you!

Fernando Sala

Insanely impressive

KaJuPe

Excellent work Ian, your consistent effort shows in the high quality and your unique vision tells a great story. always a pleasure to watch your work

sam mulhall

so cooool

Lorenzo Coluccia

Also is it normal that the colours on the downloaded versions are weird? The blacks are grey...

Sten Heijster

Amazing ! Great job !

basile

Looks incredible! I made a short-film in blender last month, where about 90% would not have been possible without your trailblazing. Would love if you did a roast-series of your patreons videos one day, could use the feedback..! On another note: I downloaded the 5GB version and got quite a washed out image, the blacks represented quite light-greyish, very different from the youtube-version!

Olle Stjerne

It was beautiful. Especially the opening sequence. Straight out of a Hollywood Blockbuster. Downloading the 10gb version now. Need some new wallpapers for my desktop and that sibiltine state asteroid looks too crisp to not be made a wallpaper.

Milan

Amazing work Ian! can't wait to the next episodes :)

Nir Weitzman

Sooooo cool, hahah

Sten Heijster

Just watched it! It's cinematic as hell man. <3

Luka Hrgovic

This is absolutely marvellous. The amount of work, the precision, and the conditions you made this in make it truly special. Thank you for being a huge source of inspiration for my own work in creative coding and the creation of visuals with blender

Sten Heijster

Amazing!! Absolutely loved the whole intro of static into stars into black hole void thingamajig - gave me chills. The sound design is immaculate too and I feel like there’s a whole world (or worlds heh) to explore in the background of each shot. Just *chefs kiss* perfect 🤌

Rebecca More

Incredible work. I'd be tempted to say, as always, but this one is especially impressive ! As for breakdown questions, I'm a bit curious about some of the space stuff, notably how you animated the perfectly floaty probe with its flashing thrusters (the one at 5:10). I've done quite a bit of space animation and never managed to get something adequately floaty like that without resorting to costly and unwieldy physics simulations...

Theo Bouvier

Man I cant wait to get home

Rasool Abrahams

Jaw dropping stuff as usual, Ian. Can't wait for what's to come!

Armando Marchetti

Absolutely stunning. That is all.

Mark Saunders

Congrats, look forward to watching!!

Tim

Cant wait, good work Hubert!

BIPMATT

Watched on YouTube earlier, absolutely exquisite! 🤩👍 I'd ask "How do you even do it?!" but it'd be pointless; I already *know* and still don't understand how it's possible!

Bakamoichigei

Congratulations Ian! Amazing short! Been waiting for this bad boy for ages and so many things we can say, I know how he made that 🤣👏👏👏

David

Oh my god! Everything I have to do now until I get to watch this will be unbearable! And I’m on holiday! (In Amsterdam, by the way, and I visited the Blender HQ yesterday, where Ton himself gave me a tour)

Blemonade

Episode was fire. When do you think the next one will drop Ian?
