Digital Extensions without Greenscreen

Hi there Ian/Nathan! You probably already knew this, but apparently the Camera Projection Node Group Generator doesn't work in Blender 4.0 — maybe it's just me, but it still works fine in version 3.6! The error message I keep seeing says: 'ShaderNodeTree' object has no attribute 'inputs'. Is it caused by the new Principled BSDF? Thanks in advance!

Armando Marchetti

Hi Ian! You probably already figured this out but the issue where everything looks kind of "foggy" or "milked out" in your practical footage is because of the large light source (the soft box) right in the scene shining light directly on the lens. It's essentially a lens flare. Move the light or flag it off from the lens and *poof* clean image. Thanks as always for the amazing know-how you're sharing!

Doug Bischoff

So helpful.

Ian Vernon

oh thanks!

You can put the footage as an emission shader and use a mix node with the factor connected to camera in a light path node to change the intensity. As long as you have it mapped onto geometry in the scene, it will light up the scene accurately. https://imgur.com/a/kHrvYfl

Ninja Nolan

how can you make the footage light up the environment? can you do that with just normal footage? or do you have to shoot it all in HDR somehow???

I really love your free screen/ set extension videos. Total magic!

oh heck yea! thank you! I'll check it out! edit: that was pretty straightforward!

Charles Tigner

I'm probably doing something wrong, but Nathan's addon isn't working properly for me. After installing I get an python error. The nodegroup is there but when adding it into the vector slot it only shows one color spread out over the entire mesh.

Oh! If I'm understanding correctly, it does! Try this node setup (be sure to change the image texture extension from "Repeat" to "Clip") https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mVJ-E7ON4j5WvBxMTyx8DQ2kbthWmJBb/view?usp=share_link

oh man, it'd be real great if that camera projection add-on had the ability to apply an alpha to the projected texture - that's my number 1 workflow for matte painting projections (albeit in nuke).

Charles Tigner

This is great Ian! Also, I know you said modeling the future retro juke box would not have been a great video to watch but I DONT CARE! I love seeing you model and texture things. Anything. Seriously. I would’ve made my day. And if you stumbled a little it would’ve bn inspiring and shown that you too make mistakes!

George Moise

Seconded

Yeah, it's kind of inconsistent to say "some people said that they'd like to see more random mumbling videos" and then to deny us the possibility to see such a video. Give us the jukebox video in real time and let us decide if it's boring or not. Hint: nothing you do is boring. Even without a coherent narration it would be educational.

Nikita

I'd love to see the jukebox vid too

I'm really interested in watching how you made the jukebox, even if it's a really long video, I'd love to see how you think.

Al

I have to see the timelapse of the jukebox, it looks incredible

Jed

Can confirm I love the random ass stuff

Evan Barron

I know I probably repeat myself but… this is SO cool. The things you and Nathan do are insane. This Patreon is a gem
