Boat Shoot Day 1- summary!

Day 1!!! Absolutely incredible. Writing this post is almost literally my first time doing anything but actively working on the shoot in a couple weeks, and that's only because the first day went so good I feel I can relax a little bit (also this is the longest period between wrap times and call times :P)

The images above don't capture it, but they're the best I have at the moment (I keep trying to document and make short videos, but jumping from task-to-task means I can't get enough to get anything sensible- we have two great BTS folks documenting everything, though!). There's this bizarre magic- which I mostly attribute to our DP Johnny Valencia- where in real life the scene may look fine, but on the monitor it looks utterly fantastic.

Literally- we filmed some of the best footage of my life today, and it wasn't even particularly stressful, mostly because we've spent most of the past couple weeks trying to get a bunch of different folks all working on the same plan, so today I mostly just got to watch it unfold. Absolutely incredible folks; Aidan's wardrobe is going to be so excellent (they wardrobe team made great decisions on what folks should wear, and now they're going wild aging- it's so fun to watch), Lela's prop sourcing and setup is perfect, Kaitlin's set decoration (she's helping with art in the Bunk Room!) worked wonderfully, and everything came together with an unexpected polish with the skills of the grip & electric team's lighting, and Johnny's instincts. Jonathan, Brice, and Nick pleasantly kept us on track and moving, and a whole team of other folks helping fill every gap made today a blast.

Also! Nathan's on board as full-time VFX supervisor, documenting the lenses and cameras and doing tests and grabbing dozens of HDRIs and photoscans- it's a decadence. This is going be such a great way to try out a bunch of new post workflows and techniques we want to experiment with!

It's fun, in the greenscreen world, to be able to spend days on the environment of a single shot, and fill it full of details. It's a hard thing to do when you have to film multiple scenes in a single day, but I really think we might come close to pulling it off, mostly because of the planning (and the unexpected richness of Lux's props from the past year!)

That said! Today was the easy day- by far. This was the warmup, where we just filmed a few random shots, effectively. I still don't have a sense of how things'll play out when it's a full day, but I'll find out tomorrow.

That said- I haven't been sleeping much at all, and I think I'll need it tomorrow, so I'm gong to try to sleep!

I am SO thankful to everyone on set for making it so pleasant, and for everyone here for making it possible!  I'll aim to have some more interesting BTS when I can!

For now,  I Sleep.

"we filmed some of the best footage of my life today" That is statement:-) the place is so good, why do you need some 3D work to put on top of it?:-) Can't wait to see the next steps of your workflow. But anyway what are the next steps?

DUUUUDE! people should set up more events like this for things being de-commissioned/scrapped. where they open it up for people to look around/photo or SCAN stuff, they could charge like a museum style fee or a donation style fee. where you show up and just pay something to enjoy the wreck. "Asset Archive events"
