Asset: Three Space Rocks

Just a quickie!

Some times you need space rocks!! My grandfather had a rather impressive rock collection, so I raided some of the particularly volcanic specimens, scanned them, and I think they work pretty well! Actually- I think one might be petrified coral? Or regular coral? Also, one of these is an inch and a half across, so it's fun to see it as a big space rock :P

Above is a test I did yesterday- I think it works alright; I like the way the ship looks in the sunlight (although lots of animation stuff I need to tweak). Some of the rocks aren't quite as high poly as they should be (volcanic rocks are kinda fractal, so stuff can get nuts pretty quick), but combined with the texture (and a bit of motion blur), you can get away with a lot. Also tinted them orange in this case, just to add some color.

Blend File (with somewhat normalized textures)
FBX (Unnormalized textures)

They also work really well when combined with particle systems (just like 10,000 little beveled cubes or something, being emitted from the surface, can give a comet vibe). They also look different from every angle (except for the round one, which is always round).

I LOVE YOU

You can get skymaps from Nasa and project them onto a Sphere (which can get a bit tricky near the poles) or use them as an environment map. Like here: https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/4851 Because, sci fi, you may want a version of the night sky that doesn't look like the one around Earth, but Nasa (in a subtle admittance that they're into sci fi as well, I think) are delivering as well: here's a sky map from "another time, another place", with randomly shifted stars in order to get rid of those pesky, as-seen-from-earth constellations: https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/4856

How would you go about doing the stars in the background? It looks amazing!

Thanks! I just wanted to make sure you knew if it was on your end

Wow that animation... cant wait, I know one thing that pilot is the real MVP, kind of want to see something hit a rock though :)

I Like it Hardcore Tv

Dang! I've run into that before, and I still have no idea what causes it (it started with Blender 3.0)- unfortunately in this case I can't reproduce it on my end so I don't know how to troubleshoot it! Maybe the FBXs can work? I'll see if I can figure it out :/

Looks really good!

Sérgio Merêces

This works great, could you share your compositing and color grading tips if possible?

Oof looks amazing. Love the lighting & bounce from them space rocks & the immersiveness of the camera work 👌

Maybe this is just a me problem, but the linked blend file is just a default project

Normalized textures? What are those? Doesn’t normalized usually means between -1 and 1?

Juan Romero

That test render is frickin' AMAZING!!!!

Love the way it swivels the engines like it’s gaining control

I have tried to work with renderman to get some diversity in my knowledge. Needless to say, it was a frustrating process and not rewarding at all. Cycles x wins.
