Motion Tracking Shenanigans

I've been working on a bunch of stuff, but nothing that's lent itself perfectly to a tutorial, so I decided to go easy on myself and say it's okay if tutorials cover ground I've already covered before, and here we are! This was fun :D

Here's the waterfall footage if you want to do anything with it on your end. I also have a folder of other greenscreen/motiontracking shots, if you ever want to experiment (some of the shots are straight up from Dynamo, so it'd be a little weird if you used them in your own projects, but I mean, up to you!)

Also, would you guys dig random drone footage shot with VFX augmentations in mind? I've got some- I should upload it.

cool, we can make AVATAR 3 like this

hi , where can i find the asset of the fog and others?

Hey. It seems like there is an error in playing this video. Maybe you can check it out if the link is down or something.

@ian would love to see some of that drone footage if you've got it handy.

Thank you so much Ian and Peter

Yeah! Peters suggestions are the best place to start! And making sure the framerate of the project matches the framerate of the footage (not sure if that'd make stuff drift out of sync- it might?)

Ian Hubert

Sounds like it could be that the object you're projecting on doesn't have enough geometry. Try subdividing the surfaces and see if that helps. Also in shading make sure you've turned up the number of frames for the video texture.

Peter Mackey

NEED HELP !! i tried to make a scene like this. i got a solve error of 0.52, then i used uv project modifier on the object. For a couple of frames the texture sticks to the object ( from the camera's point of view) after that the texture does not stick to the object , the texture wiggles slightly as the camera moves. how to fix this...?? @ianhubert

I just love Happy Ian! "It's a Thing!" Me: I will never even get close to this. Lol.

I am learning so much that I am frozen with idea overload, thank you, these are priceless tutorials full of priceless tips and tricks

These, shall we say études? are great. I quite enjoy them as well. "Hard stuff" becomes spontaneous and almost almost part of phrasing.

Awesome! I definitely don't mind you going over things you've already covered. If anything it's even more fun to see if used in different ways.

When you talked about how your pictures of the waterfall are just a big green mess, I was like, exactly! Videos seriously change everything just because that little bit of parallax makes it all click.

John Zwick

I'm inspired now! I think over Thanksgiving break I'm going try something with some footage :) I've always shied away from motion captured stuff, but now I've gotta try it. Also, I find that a lot of the best tips you give are those little details you give, like pressing P to change the profile for that circular detail in the railing! Love it :)

Richard Reimer

Awesome

Thank you -- that's just the kind of advice and wisdom I needed to know!

So from the looks of it, in this amazon product you're getting green, black and white fabric all together? I'd try to find something without the added black and white fabrics because it seems like an added cost for something you wouldn't use too much for a VFX workflow. It should be noted the actual green fabric is probably the easiest to obtain and cheapest part. I bought several metres of green cotton for only about $12 :D. 6mx3m is good for filming some idle full body shots just be aware you won't be able to walk around very much, especially as you're generally meant to stand a few feet way from the screen to avoid casting shadows on it So in the set you're mostly paying for the lights and stand/clamps to hold the fabric. You only need 2 lights to evenly light a standard green screen, and typically the other 2 are for lighting the actor separately, so if you already have good lights around that can be used for filmmaking I probably wouldn't pay extra for the 2 to light my actor. 174 euros is not too bad of a deal for the set, especially considering that's four good lights you're getting, but there's just some extra considerations specifically about what you're using it for (VFX things) which you need to ultimately decide is worth paying for this set. I can't delve too much into how you should be budgeting but if you really want to go El Cheapo, there's also several filmmaking videos from channels like Film Riot to make your own, even cheaper lighting setups, and you could probably buy the fabric at a larger size for a cheaper price at a fabric store, and then just purchase a stand for it separately

Inspiring stuff! Fortune cookie for u mr. Dallas!!

JØRGEN WETAAS BULL

Same, it's my favorite kind of content on this Patreon. I mean, don't get me wrong, ALL the content on this Patreon is incredible, but live-action/CGI integration stuff is my absolute favorite.

Kai Christensen

This was great! And it doesn't matter if you touch on older things, there's always something new to learn (plus blender keeps updating little updated to these same tools)

Diego Nossa

wow another cool video

Ry Ken

I would love to get my own green screen setup, but I don't know what's important and what's worth spending or saving money on. I saw a set on Amazon that's just 174 euros, which sounds like a good deal, but I'm not qualified to judge whether it's junk, or has useless stuff I don't need, or is missing something important. What would you recommend to somebody getting started on a budget, and also what is worth investing a bit more money in, please? Here's the set I found, for comparison: https://www.amazon.de/Neewer-Green-Background-Foldable-Chroma/dp/B01JRYJ9HY

Happy birthday Ian! Nice Jurrasic scene, all this needs is a Pakisaurus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xd4ygI0GHV8

Happy belated birthday. Cool video.

Happy birthday dude!

HerbHerbHerbert

Happy birthday!

Nathan Vegdahl

Awesome! Covering old ground is very helpful. Thanks dude!

I love seeing motion tracking and compositing stuff!

Amazes me how you can junk images together and bash some amazing things effortlessly while playing and investigating, yet I slave over the tiniest thing and it looks totally shit. Keep up the good work my good man and thanks for enlightening us mere mortals.

Zander

I thought about this very process on the weekend, please do upload the drone footage It would be ideal for me to test out a concept. Thanks, always, for being in my head... Hope you’re having an epic birthday.

Dewi

Always cool with covering old ground man. Always manage to pick up new tricks and techniques. :)

Daniel Hause

That's a VERY good idea. I've wanted to do something similar, but so far the number of mouse clicks required is just wild. That said!! I was talking with Sergey (the brilliant guy who programed the tracker), and he said he could come up with a system that auto generated a mesh based off the point cloud really easily, which would be amazing.

Ian Hubert

You could post 20 different rigging tutorials in a row and I'd still watch them. IMO just post whatever you happen to be working on at the moment and don't worry too much about curating things. While I _am_ constantly learning new things from your posts, like Hannah said above, I'm always interested in watching your creative process.

I've rewatched your tutorials many times, so am more than happy with new content covering the same topics! I always feel really inspired after watching your creative process, which appeals strongly to my ADHD 😅 Have an excellent birthday trip!

Happy Birthday!!!! Also you should totally upload the drone footage!

Great stuff! I mainly use maya and when I do rough geo to project onto I usually just keep extruding and snap my points onto the nulls (or locators in Maya) I kept wanting to do that during your video haha

Congratulations, Ian, happy birthday! And yeah, show the old ground some love, it certainly deserves It 😅👍

Mornarion

Happy birthday! Man, this is a treat. You give out great inspiration! And I might have to finally buy a drone haha too cool. Definitely feel free to tread old ground on Patreon, there's still plenty to take away from these sorts of experiments. Cheers!

Tyler Adams

Old ground is nice to visit. I'm still watching the lazy tutorials over and over :) Happy Birthday Ian!

Yeah keep going over old ground where it interests you, especially stuff like motion tracking and compositing which I can't get enough of :D

Phil South

Hey! Happy Birthday. Always love these movie texture tutorials and sometimes it's great to re-cover something and achieve a different outcome...keeps it fresh and provides more detail on the topic...I really like it.

Nigel Hillyer

Ahahaha yeah, sleep schedule's pretty off these days :/

Ian Hubert

Love the long videos btw. I don’t know of I’m the only one but I’d definitely watch some longer video of you just working on modeling / scene building. With commentary would be cool. :)

Don't worry about "repeating" yourself, please! I could watch 100 videos from you on this exact subject - camera/projection mapping. You make it look so easy, as usual. The only part that threw me off a bit was when you were building the geometry to match the tracking markers. I guess it's a mostly intuitive process

"good morning" is 1pm on the clock >_<

Felicia White

This was awesome. I wish you could do like a short like hard surface modeling video, you seem to make buildings so fast I can't even see what shortcuts you are using.

Alejandro Gallegos

so awesome, love the process!

This is incredibly handy. Thank you so much, and happy birthday!!

Arturo J. Real

Yes, more of this, please! The footage integration/photoscans thing keeps amazing me with how flexible and powerful it is, and it's always delightful to watch you create scenes from scratch or spend ages detailing them. Enjoy your birthday!

Zachary Macintyre

Love this kind of content. Just you working on a scene, it's exactly what I'm looking for.

Tim Evans

Happy birthday Ian!

Greg Beaudry

I was just googling various motion tracking questions yesterday! Ty so much.

Happy Birthday Ian!

Erich Stenzel

amazing!! As always!! Happy Birthday!! Here in Portugal is already tomorrow ahah! Lots of love!!

Wow! This is so creative! Thank you!

Dyrgrip FX

Drone stuff, always good!

Mike Hay

I like the off the cuff format! Very entertening

Felipe Galo

amazing tut ian thanks!!

I appreciate the old ground coverage! Still learning new techniques and ways of thinking, cheers :)

HAPPY ALMOST BIRTHDAY IAN!!!!

Blake Rizzo

That's a great point!!

Ian Hubert

If you put the original footage resolution into aspect X and Y, the aspect ratio will be perfect and you don't have to guess at the scale.

Mark Miller

I've got a Mavic- it works great (although I suspect there's a higher-dynamic format I could be shooting in)

Ian Hubert

Sweet! I'll try to gather some together!

Ian Hubert

4:50 - Deletes default cube. 4:52 - Adds new cube. Awesome stuff!

What drone do you use, Ian?

Fes

Drone stuff, oh yeah

Benjamin Lacey

I'd totally dig random drone footage, I love that stuff!
