Animating a Chase Camera

I've been slow to make this video 1.) because I'm not a particularly great animator and 2.) because anything regarding animation is mostly just going to devolve into a bunch of graph editor tweaking (cause that's how you do it).

Final animation at 25:30. I'm reasonably happy with it, but what would REALLY make it work is secondary motion- wheels/suspension bouncing, the driver looking around, leaning into the turns (and, honestly, a little more camera shake wouldn't hurt). It's kinda cheating, but if you get enough secondary motion going, it really can kinda make up for shortcomings in the primary motion department.

killed it with the end credits.

Like everyone said Ian, publish that amazing unexpected and completely refreshing ending public on Youtube. The world deserves to see it and smile like we all did. :)

Oh dude. Don’t ever change or be embarrassed of yourself. Your personality is like 95% of why I subscribed. I’ve known of blender for like a week. Have you watched other ppl’s tutorials? Clearly these folks know WAAAY more than me, but their content is so dry. Like dragging your mind across the Sahara. Keep being you. I look forward to watching all your content. Make the woosh noises.

JerBearT

first off hell yes this was so insightful. Ive always wanted to create a high impact chase scene in a scifi fantasy setting and this is definitely going to help ! and now that SONG! WHEN DOES THE TALENT END MYH GUY?!?! hah great job!

I've had this song in my mind the whole weekend. Curse you, Ian. And bless you, I'm confused 😅

Mornarion

LOLz the end.

And THATS entertainment! A good starting point for the bike lean is to keyframe completely upright at the far left and right and at halfway point have your lean angle. Bezier interpol makes a nice transition and then you can tweak for extra effect

song at the end sounded really good

Luke L

god of open source software

haha You're the Best <3

hahah the end had me laughing so hard

An epic ending to an excellent tutorial! Man, are there things you _can't_ do??

Mario Taylor

That was just so nice! (((: Funny thing with the motorcycles. In high speeds they cant turn before leaning and because heavy wheels which act like a big gyros driver offsets the bike to opposite direction so its starts to lean to other direction. But even without knowing this people know when it doesnt look right because motorcycles are somewhere deep in our brain. Other funny thing deep in our brain! Leaning over 20 degrees feels freaking scary because thats the maximum leaning angle human can achieve when running a circle.

Justus Hulmu

Ian! Another very useful tutorial and extra thanks for the musical run out as the tone arm swings towards the spindle!

Erich Stenzel

brilliant :)

IAN! I love u

Griffin Toal

the ending is why I'm in Patreon ahahah

Super great stuff as always by Ian!

Wow! I'm still experimenting with the neon lights he gave us and now another tutorial!??!?!??

LOL, the ending is priceless :-D

Man it COULD be!!! This was just me opening every preceding video with the screen capture utility, and recording a new pass over and over, and it's exactly the kind of 0 stakes recording environment that lets me actually finish stuff instead of letting it rot on a 10 year old laptop until I can "get it perfect" :P

Ian Hubert

28:55 well spent!! Thanx!

JØRGEN WETAAS BULL

You should do a song for every video. Because, that's like, easy, right?

Nathan Vegdahl

It's from the Prospect short film! I ended up with a truckload of old props from both the short and the feature, and there's some absolutely unbelievable stuff in there (I got the TV behind me from it, too- though I had to figure out how to hook it up to a Roku stick, hahaha; super fun to be able to watch youtube on an old tv)

Ian Hubert

Holy Cow! First, the tutorial is truly handy for me right now, I'm trying to make a scene with motion and even though it's not a chase (it's a fancy scooter ride), most of it helps me a lot because it still applies. And second, and most important: the song is amazing, as all your music is. Have you considered uploading your themes to Spotify? I found some Ian Hubert guy but I guess that's not you :)

Mornarion

lmaoo awesome tutorial!! quick question where did you get the astronaut helmet at the end? i’ve been trying to find a decent one forever but no luck!

Justin

My hope is only that future civilizations will toil in confusion and frustration while attempting to deconstruct the importance of a specific father's new hairdo. Banger of a video as always Ian, thank you for your wisdom!

Gehrig Campbell-Dempsey

I tried to find that awesome song at the end by searching the lyrics but realized you probably wrote it! Bravo sir

Aha!!! Yes! I haven't played with them in a long time, but I accidentally signed up for like 4 gigs at once, all of which needed various levels of tweaks, and it burnt me out a little bit, so I'm trying to jump over to something a little more hands-on for a sec (arduino is always SO fun). If nothing else I'm just trying to refamiliarize myself with the process, but I also have a radio transmitter/receiver, and I'm trying to figure out how to get it to play nice with the arduino for building remote controls robots n' such; useful even if it's just for high-techy props. A bundle of servos you can control remotely and just hot glue little techy bits to is a VERY handy thing to have, haha Have you used them much?? I'm a total beginner, but I can sorrrt of figure out the programming (nice that it can be so copy-and-pasty)

Ian Hubert

Also, thank you for this incredible instruction. Whether or not you feel like you nailed it, it's über useful to me. My Blender skills get significantly better every time you upload, and now I'm putting more time and effort into it than ever. Thank you for showing what's possible with hard work!

Kai Christensen

Couldn't help but notice you got an Arduino editor window open on your dock! What sort of craziness are you cooking up that uses (fancy voice) *microcontrollers*?!

Kai Christensen

you should put some people on those bridges leaning over the rails to see the action.... just a thought. heh heh

Ryan game

I love you Ian

Ryan game

Camera animation and a surprise music video?!! Love this double feature!!

Blake Rizzo

Don't sell yourself short- what do you mean, you're not a good animator? Compared to who? And I love the song BTW...nice vocals.

Pete Burges

Forget the blender stuff. I actually came here for the song At the end. 🔥

Maybe you missed it—there's a post from last month that touched on a lot of that! "Thoughts on Optimizing your Cycles Renders." https://www.patreon.com/posts/thoughts-on-your-37312614

Carter Burr-Kirven

I am sorry. Was there a animating chase camera tutorial with this amazing music video???? I watched the entire thing and that is all I could see. And I didn't know Young Steve Buscemi could sing like that. :D

Fes

Thank you SO MUCH for taking my request seriously! I woke up to this (its morning here) and my day is already off to a great start. Even though, as you said, there is a random element, this has tons of useful things I can use and I can't wait to get back to animating my dog fight scene! Loved the song at the end too :D

Aman Bhargava

You have no idea how handy this is for me! Thanks! And the song at the end is a real banger 😆 I'd love to see your take on how to lower render times, like decimating background objects or using billboards instead of objects, using nVidia denoiser, and so on. If you can, you want to, and if you find it interesting to share, of course!

"That's gold Jerry! GOLD!"

Alejandro Gallegos

Bro that song at the end was 🔥🤓👌🔥 YES ☺️

Patrick Lever

I was literally animating a chase camera this past couple of days and just exported it... I mean... I will do it again after this video

Came expecting an animation tutorial, ended up also getting a complete bop of a song!

I try to make the camera movement in the chasing scene more realistic and you nailed it in the hyperbole scene. I’m so glad you have this out

LeBang Cine

I hope this covers what you were curious about! I'm not sure I really nailed it, so let me know if there's anything additional you'd want to know!

Ian Hubert

I was waiting for this one for so long. But here we are!!!
