The Legend of Vox Machina S1 E1-2

A nat20 prediction of this caliber feels fitting for this series but haters will still say it's fake ;)

Comments

Not the dice landing on a twenty on the predicted twist and actually be correct

Marceline_mother

I'm not even to the YouTube intro yet, but bald and beard YES (though I'm biased bc that's the look my husband rocks lmao 🤣)

bunny

also the "Vox Machina" being a play on words is because it means "Voice Machine" (it's often translated as "voice of the machine" or "voice from the machine" but it's technically just voice machine) and they're all voice actors. They picked the name when they decided to let Geek & Sundry stream the game, because uuuuuh their previous group name had been the Super High-Intensity Team (aka The SHITs) and they were a fair amount more reserved when it came to cursing and crude/lewd stuff when they first started. Which, fair, most people had no idea who they were and actual plays weren't super popular outside of the existing ttrpg communities (and were much less common). I do like how as they've grown their fanbase and made CR into their own thing that they control entirely, they've let loose more with that. It never has really felt excessive to me (Scanlan often did but also I think Sam was trying to rework a character who hadn't had a lot of depth into something more befitting the campaign and the later in the VM campaign they got the less unnecessarily smarmy it felt. Plus they'd been bouncing off Orion before he was removed and Orion was... hm. Very inappropriate in a lot of situations, imo. I think having him at the table was a negative influence in that regard, which is why Scanlan and Grog quickly stopped feeling so squicky to me. At least that's my theory.)

I have a big Pyrenes/Lab mix who looks like a big teddybear. We did in fact name him Trinket after Vex's bear. XD

This! Honestly a lot of the stuff they did pre-stream and pre-briarwoods is not part of the TV show, which is super valid because not only was the Briarwoods arc where they really hit their stride from a "playing for an audience" standpoint, and not only do we only have a limited amount of info on the stuff they were doing before, but there was an additional member of the party up until... basically when they left for Whiterun. So the new introduction and kickoff of plot is both to streamline for the audience and for the sake of the plot being better structured for TV shows, and to be able to just entirely write Tiberius out of the story, because his player Orion did _not_ leave the group on good terms, based on what little they've said about what happened.

Cool to see another Pathfinder GM!f Fun fact for you, Vox Mochina started in 4e as a one shot for Liam's (Vax) birthday, before switchin to Pathfinder 1e for a longer campaign, and then switching to 5e in 2015 when they started streaming on twitch at ~level 10, so the first three episodes are a reimagined retelling of important prestream campaign story before transitioning into the first main arch in stream with the Briarwoods on episode 3 here

Kyle

I love that you have discovered Vox Machina (Voice of the Machine) So excited to see your reactions to this and the Mighty Nein as I have been a Critter since Campaign 1 first aired.

Smiling Game Master

And I'm sure tons of other people have explained this, but these first two episodes are their own min-arc, from before the campaign started streaming, which was the Kickstarter's main goal. (You know, from before they knew they would be raising over $11M.) The rest of the season is known as the Briarwood arc, which in many people's opinion is when CR's live stream really got rolling :)

Here's the song for the opening--originally for Kickstarter supporters only :) Lyrics only, sadly. It always makes me sad when reactors *know* there's supposed to be a song for the intro but never get to hear it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZYZb9EmYVg&list=RDSZYZb9EmYVg&start_radio=1

To your half-elf twin point, it's been done! And early at that: Papa Tolkien beat everyone else to it. Our old friend Elrond Half-Elven and his unmet (long-dead) brother Elros are born to one human and one elf parent, and faced the same choice as Arwen makes within Lord of the Rings itself. Each choose to embrace a different half of their parentage (and thus, acquire the lifespan and spiritual virtues that go with it): Elros gets to hang with the Numenoreans and taste mortal death (and be Aragorn's great-great-great-great-etc granddad) long before the trilogy, and Elrond gets the healing virtue and ring-bearing and is still around in the present. Once again, the old master beat the young dogs to it.

NOT THE DICE PREDICTING THE ENTIRE BLUE DRAGON ARC LMAOOOOOOOO NO SHOT

Jem Carstairs

In the campaign, Scanlan gave people inspiration, counter spelled, etc, by parodying actual songs in character, this is how the show makes up for that

Jem Carstairs

Sam sang all the time during the campaign

Faen_Galan

Those are some nice golden dice we’re not allowed to see there, Joseph Smith

champagnia

The dice predictions are so good and fucking sending me🤣

Syenna Lupfer

No one told me... MORTIUS... we've been telling you that you will love this show for AGES

DnD Addict

Pretty sure my favourite thing about this particular Nat 20 is that the die was kind enough to agree.

Doriima

Did you give up on Helluva Boss? You said in both that you'd binge the first seasons before reacting to something else. So is it going to be a mix between the two, or just Vox Machina instead?

Kiro LV

The story of these two episodes actually takes place before they started streaming the campaign on Geek and Sundry. They had been playing for awhile and originally were playing pathfinder but switched to dnd 5e.

“You didn’t call that, Vex?” “***I DID!!!!!***” You’re so hilarious - this series is going to be so much fun!

Just some fun FYI: - Vax isn't a soul knife, in the OG campaign he had a magic belt that recalled his daggers when they were thrown. - Percy's Gunslinger is a Fighter subclass. Matt released it around the same time the campaign started and it's remained pretty popular. Before they started streaming, they played in Pathfinder, and when they decided to switch over to 5th Edition for the stream, Matt had to homebrew a Gunslinger for Percy as there wasn't an official one. - It included a "misfire" system that we see in that opening combat, where a low roll required a check to fix it, and too many low rolls jammed the gun and required out-of-combat fixing. - As you can imagine, at high levels (when Fighters get 4 attacks per action plus action surges) this subclass is absolutely cracked. Percy is high on the list of "highest damage dealt in a single turn." - The barkeep is a Changeling. They're a character made by the fans as part of the original crowdfunding campaign. - The party was originally called the Super High Intensity Team (the S.H.I.T.s) but when they were invited to start streaming the campaign on Geek & Sundry, they decided to change their name to be more appropriate. Vox Machina (Voice Machine) was chosen as a nod to the fact that they're all voice actors. - Sam is actually a very good singer. Throughout the campaign he parodied A LOT of popular songs, I'd recommend looking up a compilation in the future (probably AFTER finishing the show) as they range from stupidly hilarious to surprisingly good. - You're correct, as a ranger, Vex has a "favoured foe" that she can gain bonuses for, including sensing when that type of creature is nearby. Vex chose dragons, and they translate that ability to sense them as the ringing in her ears. - I believe Pike lighting up Vex's arrow was her Channel Divinity. Pike is a War Cleric, which gets War God's Blessing to give allies a bonus to attacks. - Worth noting, in the OG campaign, Krieg was only an Adult Dragon, not an Ancient one. Still an impressive feat, but not outlandish. - And my final fun fact, these first two episodes were originally all that they were going to make, until the Kickstarter raised like 10x their original goal and they went on to make a whole series with Amazon. These two adapt a part of their home game not seen on the livestream, one of their early adventures that was referenced in the stream a few times. From here on, the series adapts actual story arcs that they played live!

HamboneKablooey

Vox Machina was not the campaign with the Crabgrass unfortunately

Brady Thompson

Excited for more episodes let's gooooo!!

I'm so excited to watch you react to this. Critical Role is definitely a special interest of mine and I love seeing people fall in love with this world. I love every single main character and most of the main NPCs. So proud of you for that Nat 20 on the Krieg prediction, it was on par with the Owen one lol. Scanlan songs were one of my favorite parts of this campaign in the livestreams , it would've been a shame if they didn't have Scanlan occasionally singing in the show.

Liz Siron

So happy you’re reacting to this show! Welcome to the Critter Community, it’s a fun time. Here’s some (no spoilers) character clarification, and the answers to some of your questions from the reaction: Grog- Goliath Barbarian, Path of the Berserker Pike- Gnome Cleric, War Domain Keyleth- Half-elf Druid, Circle of the Moon Percy- Human Fighter, Gunslinger Scanlan- Gnome Bard, College of Lore Vex’ahlia- Half-elf Ranger, Beastmaster Vax’ildan- Half-elf Rogue, Assassin Trinket- Bear, best boy The easiest way to remember which twin is which is Vax=A as an Adam=Male twin, Vex=E as in Eve=Female twin Vax’s returning daggers do look like Soulknife rogue abilities, but it’s actually a magical item he has called the Belt of Returning that allows his daggers to teleport back to him after being thrown And their group name, Vox Machina, translates to “voice machine”, which is a joke about the fact that all of the Critical Role players/founders are professional voice actors

Lolo

Mortius, please keep doing the ad rants! They're both entertaining and educational!

Alsononaz
