I'm impressed you managed to not get spoiled on the plot. I got to see the theater showing as my first viewing, and I knew way too much. XD I agree that the liar-reveal plot is the biggest issue with the film, though I couldn't put my finger on it until you called it that.

One thing I LOVE that I don’t notice people talking about often is how Rumi measures herself by her usefulness. AKA her voice. When the patterns interrupt Golden, she says “how am I supposed to seal the Honmoon if I don’t even have my voice” When talking to Jinu “The one thing that gives me purpose, my voice” For the better part of the movie, she sees herself as nothing but a tool to complete the Honmoon.

So I don't think Rumi is half-demon because the only time that is confirmed is by young Rumi, who has only been told that by her aunt. I think either her aunt or her mom tried to make a deal with Gwi-ma as her mom was dying to save Rumi. thinking that they would take the patterns, but he interpreted it as a deal with Rumi because it was her life that was being saved. Someone doing something selfish confused him, so she got the patterns.

My partner and I watched this movie, loved it, and when we got to "Your Idol" I was just like "Oh no...I was immune to boy bands in my teenage years but I am not immune to the hot demon kpop boy band..." Maybe N*Sync and Backstreet Boys should've had claws and fangs and glowing eyes...

What I find cool is the Saja Boys are followed by the sound of an opening can. It's like a soda pop commercial, creating a association between the Saja Boys and their song 'Soda Pop,' which has those can opening sounds. Sublimitional messaging. I think I heard it when the boys were first introduced, during their first song, when Saja Boys were talking about their growing fan base before Rumi mets with Jinu the second time, and during their final performance. I might have missed one.

For me the reason this movie works is because it's fresh. I like so many other animation fans are sick of safe options. Give me something risky. This felt risky. And like something that the creators were passionate to make. The amount of Pixar and Disney flicks I've seen that bored me recently while this hit it out the window in terms of creativity and artistic energy. Sony Pictures has had my attention since the spider verse flicks.

I’m not sure if it’s intentional or just a general allegory for shame / things society demonizes but I definitely interpreted it that way too. The part where Rumi said “why couldn’t you love me? Why couldn’t you love ALL of me?” struck me to the core. Like, ow. That’s so real.

When hiding and fixing things on your own is a part of the source culture, I think this trope is forgivable. I have been completely obsessed with this movie, and the songs for the last few weeks. The lyrics, and EJAE'S story have me coming back to this constantly. I've probably watched this movie and reactions 50+ times in the last 2 weeks

I also think had they not immediately spouted Celine’s bs at her about hiding the fact her voice was going out in that one scene, she may have actually told them. But they reiterated the beliefs that Celine had been throwing in their faces the entire time so she didn’t feel comfortable telling them in the end. It feels a lot more natural for her to be hesitant due to that than some of the other liar plots some movies shove out.

Also the framerate should remind you of spiderverse cause same animators. The girls are animated on 2’s and the demons on 1’s btw, with rumi switching to 1’s whenever she’s with Jinu/accepting the demon half of her.

I feel this is a movie I can forgive the lying trope since they have flashbacks showing she wanted to try being honest but was told by her mother figure to hide that part of herself and then when she goes to Celine she ask why couldn't you love all of me it's feel like the lie is built on that fear she has that Celine didn't love her and so rumi doesn't believe anyone else will either

As someone who is also a certified “liar revealed plot” hater I totally got your frustration with that part of the movie. Personally though, this is like the one movie where it really worked for me. I actually didn’t realize it WAS using that trope until you said it and I’ve already watched the movie twice. I found that it was woven in really well with the movie’s themes of shame and Rumi’s internal struggle. Even if she was in the wrong, I never found myself frustrated with her for lying, especially since she probably saw it as a secret that could mean life or death. Anyways I’m not trying to say you’re in any way wrong for disliking it here, I just found it interesting that we felt differently about it in spite of both hating the trope!

I highly suggest going and checking out the extended versions of the songs in this movie! They cut out a lot of cool stuff for time and it’s so worth it to check it out!!!

Okay, I've commented too many times (sorry!) but now that I'm actually done: have you changed your mind about the 'lying' plot line now that you've seen the entire arc? Unlike a movie for adults, this is a kids movie, so the issue of Rumi lying to her friends for so long is shown as 100% wrong. I don't think it's overdone here because it's for kids and is one of the main takeaways from the plot and the characters. I'm not sure how they would have done the shame plot line without her hiding/lying about her patterns.

The “marks” not being on her hands after she sang with Jinu is not an inconsistency, they represent her guilt and fear. She didn’t feel the need to hide when around him, so they showed, but around others she still feels pressured and so they scaled back (but if she keeps trying to hide eventually it will boil over and they’ll come back fully)

demon hunters as a concept in connection to Korean music and kpop actually has historical relevance!!! The first generation of Hunters had outfits similar to Korean shamans (traditionally women) and courtesans. Korean Shamans would use music and performance to drive back demons, communicate with spirits, or connect and protect a community. There's some people in Korea that say that Shamans and kpop idols walk the same path because of their role in bringing together society through music The demon designs are also based off of traditional Korean folklore's goblins (도깨비) and demons (also taking inspiration from their traditional architecture) Also music wise, they got The Black Label (a subsidary of YG entertainment: a famous entertainment company) to produce the music to the music. The black label's main producer Teddy Park is responsible for blackpink's sound & the lyricists like EJAE (Rumi's singing voice) are well known in the kpop world for their work with other kpop groups which is why it's so authentic to real life kpop sonically and lyrically

My favorite characters are tiger and bird. I could watch shorts of them all day long of little adventures they go on. Or tiger just trying to upright something. But i do know most the singer are actual professional singers and not actresses or actors. I love this movie so much! You so totally look into the background of the tiger and Magpie in Korean culture, its like the longest ever running satire in Korea. Also, a lot of people hypothesized that Jinu is in Rumi's sword now and since his soul is still around in the world of the living, the creatures he created are still around in our world, waiting for their master. It's also possible they belong to Rumi now. If you look at Zoey's shirt at the end, it has the tiger on it. So much research was put into this movie its amazing.
