Which is totally fair and it’s all about what speaks to people personally. I really love how the music motifs echo the conflicts and similarities between zazzlil and jemilla and the tribe as a whole.

2025-02-04 08:15:38 +0000 UTCI just realized that this musical is probably so drum-heavy because Marideth, the composer and actress who played Jamilla, is a drummer. Seriously, so many people in Starkid are talented, not just in performing but also in writing and composing.

2025-02-04 07:31:34 +0000 UTCI think the murky delineation between what is actually happening in the story/what is just meta commentary is on purpose as it acts as both a way to tell jokes and to contextualize the plot as a myth. Especially considering this is how stories were passed through civilization until written word was developed, through speaking. It also makes sense to have Molag, the elder, be the narrator since her role as an authority is placed outside of the main plot. Also I love that "The Night Belongs to Snarl" has that moment with the cave painting/shadow puppets--That is the only other key form of storytelling/historical documentation in this time period. And then to have Zazzalil say "they are not going back to the cave"--thus removing them from their history and effectively removing a way for them to document what is happening and how fire was created (at least for now.). It's interesting to see how this play covers the forms of human communication and how that intersects with progress.

My favorite way to describe it is that they know how to make a professional show without taking themselves too seriously. They like to have fun with it, which definitely sets them apart from a lot of other professional theatre companies.
