One of the things I’m most proud of The Beatles doing is refusing to perform in front of segregated audiences.

Written by Paul McCartney as a message of encouragement to Black women experiencing racial injustice in the American South during the civil rights movement.

Amber, if you ever get a chance, I highly recommend listening to the Beatles Esher demos. These are essentially demos of many songs including “Blackbird” which they recorded for The White Album. It’s basically “The Beatles Unplugged”.

We still use the slang bird but it is slowly dying out.

Always great to be reminded of how amazing The Beatles were, and what a classic track.

Also, English slang for a girl was “bird”. Paul was singing a tribute to the “blackbirds”. Beautiful, indeed!

Paul wrote this song during the Civil Rights movement as an empowering and hopeful message to black women in the south in the 1960s since they were facing racial struggles.

Yes, another great song that uses the power of words and music to speak hope to people during the Civil Rights era. This was same year Dr. King was assassinated.

I'm going to have to listen to those other two versions now. Beatles version is all I know.

I really wish there didnt have to be a Beatles song every single week. We dont get many music reactions from you, it'd be nice not to waste one on a group that we already know pretty well how you feel about them.

Just listened to Beyonce version, it was well done. Read a comment that Paul wrote this song as a tribute and gift to Black women after the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960's.
