August - Genre Review: Urban Fantasy

Urban fantasy is huge right now with many big names converting urban fantasy stories into TV shows and movies. They're more immediately accessible to the average reader than traditional fantasy because they happen in our world and with conflicts everyone is familiar with. Here, we look at the bare bones of urban fantasy and what is needed to make a story.

Comments

Urban fantasy is one of my favourite settings. Probably started with Artemis Fowl and got encouraged by Shadowrun and others along the years. The reason I think I enjoy it so much is that it very rarely strays from 'Street level heroics." For the same reasons why you said Urban Fantasy is relatable, I find that when it's an orc detective investigating a serial killer or a wizard selling magic drugs you get that visceral realism with just a dash of the fantastic and it really brings it all together.
