One thing that is interesting is that Qual immediately learned how the defensive spell worked. It shows just how much of a genius he really can be, and if he persisted enough to learn the modern magic, very little could have stopped him. Its like putting a Nazi general in cryostasis, taking him out, and showing him how modern military evolved, and the guy already seeing major flaws in our tech by just a glance.
