Roswaal has to be one of my favorite characters. His vocal mannerisms alone make him entertaining anytime he's on screen, but his story and motivations that come into play later are even more interesting. Now why does Betelgeuse bite his fingers? It makes him look insane I guess lol. There is some truth to that tbh, but for real though, I think his dark magic takes a toll on his body, just not in a sacrificial per-use type of thing. I'd say it's more like how far can he push himself via the number of unseen hands he can summon at once. And yep, you're nearing the end of the first season. It's amazing on its own, but it sets up a lot for the second season, and that, in my opinion, is where this show really shines. Also, fun fact, the ending song is sung by Emilia's voice actor.
