For me, the reason the fire nation is so powerfull is simply because they attacked first and were more organized (and probably more technologically advanced, if you think about it the most advanced technology in the ATLA universe is the coal energy). Also, the thing you need to understand is that the fire nation is *literally* a fascist state. So, the old man reporting Haru is not so irrealistic; think about how many people are ready to report their neighbours just because they're immigrants or how in the nazist germany everybody was ready to report their jewish friends just because someone told them to. The earthbender were captured and defeated simply because they were overpowered by numbers initially and by the fear of being killed, deported later. It's true that in *that* village there weren't so many firebenders but to fight back against one of them meant to fight back the entire nation, probably alone. If you think about it, in every prison the numbers of prisoners is superior to the number of guards but there are almost no uprisings. Yes with the coal they could have attacked immediatly but if you spend years as a slave it will be difficult for you to stop seeing yourself as one, even without chain. Last, big ears are sexy don't worry π (I'm hoping to have written this essay in an understandble language π)
