While romantic relationship stories have their merit, I personally find them boring and I hope this story doesn't turn into that. Romantic relationship stories eat up a lot of pages on things I personally do not find interesting.

He noticed something wrong with the vibe, and still didn't fully comprehend what was wrong until Flynn spelled it out plainly to him. I think this is the most organic interaction yet, at least in regard to Kai's refusal to think about the romantic tension between him and Val.

2026-02-16 10:37:10 +0000 UTCSo far the hints at romantic tension and Kai's obliviousness towards it where mostly short comic relief elements in the story, and honestly, I would have preferred them to stay that way. But regardless of preference for this story element, the 180 from presenting Kai as oblivious to him suddenly thinking clearly about Valela's attraction to him here is a bit jarring and comes out of nowhere. The paragraph toward the end of the chapter ("He’d been avoiding every thought...") does a good job of retconning his previous obliviousness, but the switch still feels inorganic to me.
