I’m somewhat surprised you haven’t heard of it either, mainly because it was nominated for and won a ton of major awards, but it came out in 2004 so maybe it wasn’t something that would have caught your attention back then? Clementine is very Manic Pixie Dream Girl coded, but with the direction the film takes, it subverts that trope, and she’s given much more depth and importance. I agree, this part would not work with someone other than Jim Carey. They needed a person who could lean into the chaos of Joel trying to navigate his own mind and memories while holding onto what is slipping away. So good.
