I LOVE your reaction!!! I read these ages ago (in the 90s... ~gasp~) and the last part totally broke me. The last book was my least favorite by far. Jacob made it MUCH easier to take. As soon as I saw him, I cried, but I remember saying how glad I was that it was him. His being picked for the part softened the blow, so to speak.

With that said, American Gods is much faster paced, funnier, and very different in tone (more upbeat less dreamy...yet still frequently touching darkness). But similar in the way that it addresses the biggest, most profound questions and mysteries of life and the human condition. Except American Gods is much more direct in addressing issues like racism and religion -- and how modern concepts like media and are technology becoming/replacing religion...it's so deep and different and a wild ride. There's nothing like it.
