I watched this show when it first came out, but I haven’t seen it since. It really is excellent. Her relationship with Alma is definitely one of the highlights and it’s so heartbreaking how suddenly Beth loses her. The way her addictions develop slowly, but steadily throughout the episodes is painfully realistic. I’m so glad you’re enjoying this series and I’m excited to watch the rest of your reactions!

Yet another parental figure gone. Nothing to keep her back for being too far gone with drugs or alcohol and tell her to relax. Her looking back to Mr Shaibel's wisdom is so bittersweet, she must have missed him a lot. He seemed to know her better than she knew herself in a lot of ways, and now her mother is gone... Beth's little plastic hair cover is something my nan used to wear in the 80s, blast from the past!

2026-01-12 12:41:29 +0000 UTCI interpreted Alma as a cautionary tale for Beth. Like not to wait until the end of your life to take risks. By helping Beth reach her potential, Alma found the courage to try things she avoided earlier in life. She pursued a pretty happy (if short lived) relationship with Manuel (after years of an emotional affair?). She went to the zoos and the parks and the restaurants. She played the piano for an audience who loved it after lifelong stage fright. But Alma didn’t get to enjoy these things for long and they drained her physically. Maybe if she reached for them earlier, she wouldn’t have self medicated so heavily with alcohol (which can cause hepatitis). Beth assumed she’d have time to see the zoos and go to the restaurants… someday. After she won. But even the best player in the world was at the zoo with his family. Beth was there alone, drinking because she couldn’t enjoy herself. I think the little moments with the child player were part of the same warning signs that Beth is letting a lot of life experiences pass her by. Neither of them had been to a drive in. They have ambition but not much else. That kid is already the best Beth has ever played. Go see that Elvis Presley movie, kid.
