Man, I forgot how much they draw out the tension from episode to episode! I’m tempted to go watch the next episode right away, but I will try and hold on for you to watch it. With the perpetuity wing, partially I think it is good old fashioned propaganda for the benefit of the innies (it’s such a dumb word, but eventually you just do end up embracing it 😂 ), because you get more out of people if they are complicit in their own exploitation. And the innies are even more vulnerable than a regular person would be to propaganda because they have no context and knowledge about cults and political brainwashing beyond whatever reflexive scepticism they can hold onto. And partially I take it as a sign that even as Lumon very ruthlessly and efficiently brainwash the innies they have also drunk their own Kool-aid and do on some level think that they are some great saviour corporation that is justified in their exploitation, and that the worshipful art is sincere. It reminded me of when I have visited countries that are under a dictatorship, when you see shockingly sincere artwork portraying leadership like saints and gods all over the streets and in people’s homes. And you never know if someone has hung that portrait because they believe it or because they’re expected to display loyalty, and you can’t even ask because asking is dangerous for them. I don’t know if you’ve read 1984 by George Orwell, but the break room reminds me a lot of that. You’re almost forced to be the one to do your own brainwashing because it’s only when you can make yourself believe the propaganda completely that they will let you go. Just wanted to note that the specificity of the morning announcements (that people shouldn’t boast about waffle parties after Dylan mentioned his to Helly) is pretty much proof they are heavily surveilled at work. I wonder if Mark’s boss/neighbor is his deceased wife’s mother? Why the interest in him specifically to the point that she’s his next door neighbor? Also, why take the candle that belonged to his wife from the wife’s box? Also, really curious to know why they won’t let Helly resign? She’s been there for half a second, she doesn’t know squat, about the company, she’s low on the totem pole so she doesn’t have access to real information, and she won’t remember working there. Just send her on her way and get someone new, unless there’s a specific reason they choose the employees they chose.
