SEVERANCE EP 2 REACTION

SEVERANCE EP 2 REACTION

Comments

I am so glad you are watching Severance, and I am loving your reactions so far! In the first episode, there is so much to figure out that you don’t really have a chance to think through the implications. But in this episode, it really hits you how bleak the innies’ lives are. No sleep, no rest, no fresh air. No sunlight, no darkness. You never get to put on comfortable clothes, or make a meal. You’re at work, all day, forever. And not just any workplace, but an incredibly dull, restrictive and closely surveilled workplace. You don’t even really have your own thoughts to retreat to, because there are no peaceful moments and no memories of better times. You are compelled, like so many cults, to put a bright and cheery face on over any negative emotions, and if you don’t it is your personal failure. The absolute power that Lumon exercises over all the innies in complete secrecy is terrifying! And of course they abuse it! I'm honestly obsessed with the horror of the whole concept. I couldn't stop thinking about it for months when I first watched season 1, and now I am right back in it! When they are playing the game with the ball there is so much fear and menace hidden underneath the polite corporate veneer. The tension when Mark says something vaguely real is so intense, in Irving’s fear and Milchick’s bone-chillingly calm reprimand. Even in an episode with brain surgery and a recording of what sounded like torture, that scene made my skin crawl the most of any. My theory on the wellness and what the hell the point of it, is that it’s yet another way to force the workers to control themselves and their displays of emotion. These “facts” (if such vague statements an be called facts) are presented for you to enjoy, but you can’t enjoy them too much, or too little. You have to stay steady and positive, but only at a level you can sustain for however long the facts last.

More episodes coming really soon!

Christopher Walken AND John Turturro in one show???!!!! It's like the best gift ever. :) :)

I think there are 9 episodes in S1. I believe it's present-day, but the technology on the Severed floor is older - - like 80s/90s era. I think that is purposeful. Mark even has to switch out his watch. I think that's part of the control the company exerts over their ability to seek answers/knowledge -- if and when they actually start to investigate their circumstances. They all seem pretty content, except Helly, of course. But Petey suggests that he and Mark had discussed things when they worked together, so there must be part of Mark that is questioning as well, but we haven't seen it inside of Lumon yet. And everything Petey is telling him won't transfer to his innie, so that should be interesting to track.

I love how slightly exaggerated but grounded in reality all the corporate stuff is. Useless bonuses that mean nothing, therapy talk at team building meetings, looking at a spreadsheet all day etc. etc. - all of this is so recognizable for those who worked in a corporation. But of course on top of that they have an exaggerated version of a non disclosure agreement (basically). This show is so clever. I hope S2 is just as good (it was a production nightmare).

I just See it the frist time and never heard about this. I'm completely in. You many epidodes are there?

Myra

I really DID need to rewatch before season 2, so this is fun! It took me a few more episodes before I was really hooked, so for newbies that are unsure—stick it out! Oh, and CHRISTOPHER WALKEN!! All hail the king of weird!

Terri Matter

This episode was creepy. 😱 Can't wait for the next one.☺️ How many epidodes does this season have and in which time does it play? The computers look old school. I wonder if they are used in some kind of experiment or if they got powers to solve codes.

Myra

You’re the perfect audience for this show and I’m so happy you’re watching it. This was one of my favorite shows the year it came out, the second season can’t come soon enough. The episodes just get better and better as the season progresses.

Ok Taco now we got beef 😹 As a Minnesotan I now insist you come to Mpls some time and see how very NOT Montana-like we are 😹 There’s a reason Prince chose to keep living here. (Ps I’m teasing - us Minnesotans are insufferably proud of where we live lol)

Katie Bentley

Poor petey!!!! Helly is awesome so far and I hope her seeing the code, doesn’t affect her rebellion too much. Overall i don’t know what is going on in the most delightful way!

I just got my best friend to start watching this last night & we watched Ep 1 & 2, so I kinda skipped my way through to hear your reactions. As usual, you have so many smart questions. Here are some things I thought on my first watch that may or may not have been confirmed or debunked ... most are honestly still unclear. At this point in my first watch, I remember thinking the numbers had something to do with controlling the chip in their own heads (testing it or calibrating it or something). It took some time for Helly to "see" the numbers, so I that also supported my thoughts. I remember also noticing how simple they all seemed. Not quite childlike or emotionless bc they're def acting like adults with feelings, but they're so simplistic. So much commentary, too, on real work life as you discussed. Stupid incentives that some ppl actually care about and work toward in Dylan; the employee who is the loyal, rule-follower, devotee in Irving; the well intended group manager trying to look out for his team and keep things running smoothly in Mark; and the new hire with comes in questioning the status quo in Helly. She's my favorite in these early episodes bc I love the fight in her. But then there's more to it -- weird things to control/monitor their behavior like the break room, wellness checks, and Milchick & Graner in their respective roles, surveillance (camera in wellness). Miss Casey was sooooo weird to me when we first met her, like she had only one level of response and a rehearsed script -- kinda creepy. The hallway to the break room being claustrophobic and terrifying. Peteys tape of Mark in the break room (how did Petey get it?). The place also starts to feel a little cultlike around this time with the huge head of Eagan (reminded me of historical figures (dictators) or religious/culture figures who ppl worship or follow. And Lumon is everywhere, half the town works for them, Mark says, Mark lived in Lumon housing, Pip's Bar & Grille seems connected to/owned by the company. The dinner guests say the company has been around since the late 1800s starting by making topical salves. It's all so so odd. I'm glad you watched the opening credits bc they're brilliant. Def saw a connection with the black ooze Irv sees and the intro visuals. Can't wait for more from you!
