I tentatively agree with the theory of evolution, but I came across this catholic guy who had an interesting alternative view.
He takes a more anthropocentric kind of view that animals and other life forms are... trying to articulate it decently... emanations?... of us. Reflections of us as Dasein, the Being of beings, or whatnot.
The monkey represents a certain aspect of us, our souls. As does the rat, the snake, the wolf, the hawk, etc...
That would seem to explain why in some ways we are more like pigs and less like apes.

I'm not sure it's 100% accurate to call us "apes". I'm not disputing evolution, but I will point out that unlike apes, humans can swim, sweat, eat to obesity, all of which are traits we share with pigs and not apes.
With that in mind, even if we evolved from apes (or a common ancestor) humans are something else. I know some of this boils down to semantics, but I think in terms of aesthetics and resonableness there's a case to be had at least.
