I just had a thought. I wonder if only the animal guide of each species can actually understand human speech. Like thinking about how the dragon grunted to confirm Aang’s question, and it’s implied in later seasons that Appa can understand specific directions and conversations. Is Appa is the only flying bison that can actually understand human speech? Is Roku’s dragon the only dragon who can? We know for sure Momo can’t.

Each bending style is based off real-world martial arts styles. Waterbending is inspired by Tai chi, Earthbending by Hung Gar, Firebending by Shaolin, and Airbending by Baguazhang.
