"Different Waves" - If/When Bonus Track
Added 2019-08-05 18:20:03 +0000 UTCAs you may know, we released our new album If/When on July 30th! For those who preordered If/When, we included a bonus track that doesn’t appear on the album called “Different Waves”. We wanted to offer this track to YOU, our Beloved and Faithful Patrons, in case you weren’t one of the people who preordered the album! Here’s a little bit of back story for the song.
“Different Waves” was written around the same time as the rest of the If/When album. It started out as a chord progression that I wrote on the keyboard that had a synth-y feel similar to the Talcon Industries side project that we’ve been doing. However, I didn’t like the way it felt and decided instead to learn the chords on the guitar and play it that way. One night while I was staying at our keyboardist Joe Dorsey’s house for a few days, I brought the song to him and he extended it, adding some chords played on the electric organ. The next morning, I woke up and started humming a melody for it.
I don’t want to say too much about what the song is “about”, but I'll give it a try. I was describing a kind of “beyond-ness” that I’ve experienced, something deeply meaningful that I think I’ve heard from and been able to feel, despite all of my attempts to distract myself from it. A spirituality that operates on a whole different wavelength than what I’m capable of experiencing as a human being. The lyrics were my attempt to put that into poetry. Here’s the lyrics:
If I’m a body that buried in miles of land
Please understand
I lay here beneath the impenetrable shifting sands
And wait for your hand
I think I’m reaching for you
Across Different Waves
If I’m an island surrounded by layers of sound
Don’t let me drown
I lay here beneath the impenetrable lullaby
And wait for your cry
But I think you’re talking to me
Across Different Waves
